What is Gaming Age Force?
NeoGAF is represented in-game by Gaming Age Force [GAF]. Though you can join the guild regardless of server or region, the majority of the guild plays
on the Stormbluff Isle server. Please be aware that Stormbluff Isle is a North American server, and those who play on a European server will not be
able to play there without a paid transfer, as guesting is region-specific. For those on other North American servers, you can guest to Stormbluff Isle by clicking
"World Selection" and choosing the "Guest" option.

How do I join?
Whisper or send an in-game mail to any of the Guild Leaders or Officers:
Ashodin, Braxzy Bladestorm, Callunah, Hawkian, Gojira, Katoki, Kos Luftar, Levyne Lesovik, Lucrezia Stone, Lump, Professor Retro, Roxie Hood, Sophrelia, Vyrance, Xeris, Zed Zebes or Zeroth
Alternatively, you can post your username ("name.####") or a character name in the thread, but because the thread tends to move fast we cannot
guarantee we'll always see it.

Who can join?
Anyone; friends and family are more than welcome to join GAFGuild, but we ask that they be made aware of our guild policies, which can be
viewed here: GAFGuild Policies. Our policies are based heavily on GAF's own terms of service.
Be aware that guild chat is often PG-13 in tone.

What resources does GAFGuild have?
  • GAFGuild.com
To allow for more in-depth discussion, clearer event announcements and better organization, we currently have a separate site and forums
located at www.GAFGuild.com. The site has a wealth of features not available on GAF, such as an events calendar, and we'll
be adding more features in the future. Images can be quickly posted directly into the forums as well. Though we'll usually cross-post, the
best way to keep track of what GAFGuild is doing is to visit our site.
    GAFGuild.com is currently down, sorry!

  • Mumble
GAFGuild also maintains a private Mumble server for members. You can download Mumble here.
The server/port information can be found by quoting this post (it will appear at the top, embedded in the e-mail tags).
Please use your GAF name if possible, so we know who you are.

  • Teamspeak
We also have a channel on the Stormbluff Isle Teamspeak server. Download Teamspeak here.
The server information can be found by quoting this post (it will appear at the top, embedded in the e-mail tags).
Please use the [GAF] Tag followed by your GAF name if possible, so we know who you are.

  • Twitter
We will often tweet upcoming events and retweet GW2-related news.
    Follow us at @GAFGuild.

controllerlnxwk.png

It's time for you to join the legion of Guild Wars 2 gamers playing the superior way, courtesy of Hawkian and Weltall Zero.

There are so many design decisions that make GW2 a joy to play with a controller that it- in all honesty- feels like it was made for it.
If you are at all intrigued by the idea, and especially if you have an X360 pad (though this solution works to varying degrees with any input device),
you owe it to yourself to try.

Control Scheme:
ie7RDD6ifK2xE.jpg

If that looks really complex to you, I promise that it's actually simpler in practice that it looks. If that doesn't look really complex to you, you will be
blown away by how absolutely natural GW2 feels playing with a controller.

Key Features:
  • Jump, dodge, target enemies, and access all your skills in one ergonomic configuration, requiring little to no wrist movement compared to a
    keyboard and mouse.
  • Full analog stick camera control (like any third person action game)- in Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen mode, a crosshair can even be
turned on from the .ini file to help you learn
  • Fixed-aim cursor position makes aiming AOE skills simple and fast
  • Advanced mappings such as toggling walk, about face (180-degree turn), and taking screenshots
  • Back button serves as a reset (press) or activates mouse control for menus/dialog choices/etc (hold)
  • Simply right-click (on your mouse itself) to resume normal mouse control for Windows.
Known Issues:
  • During cutscenes, zone changes, and other occasions when the player loses camera control, GW2 takes over mouse control and you'll initially be
unable to move the camera. This is resolved by simply tapping the Back button once. This will quickly become second-nature (I don't even notice
    myself doing it anymore).
  • At present, some users running Windows 8 may have issues with the cursor re-positioning feature.
Installation:
Simply download everything you need here, then follow the instructions posted here or the .txt file included with the file.
Please note that the controller setup is currently incompatible with Windows 8.

Warning: You may become so accustomed to how awesome this is that you will actually be at a disadvantage if you try to go back to
mouse and keyboard.

1. Pick the class you think looks interesting and fun, not which you think will be most useful.
If one doesn't click with you, you can always try another. Whatever choice you make, you won't be penalized further down the road (i.e. you can get into a
group no matter which class you pick now). Every class can contribute, even breaking MMO-tropes; Guardians (the Paladin-like class) have access to
ranged attacks, Rangers are good in melee, etc.

- That said, most people say the Guardian, Warrior and Ranger are good classes to start with, while Mesmers, Elementalists and Engineers have a
bit of a learning curve. Seriously though, try what sounds cool to you, as all of the professions are pretty approachable and you can always ask
for help here or in-game.

- If you do decide to start a different character, any crafting materials, karma and gold you've earned are account bound and can be used by your new
character quite easily.

2. Race has no statistical advantage, it will only give you a few race-specific utility and elite skills (none of which stand out over the others). Otherwise
it is entirely cosmetic. Be aware that the "Tauren Effect" is in play here; the two large races, Norn and Charr, feel like they move slower than the others even
though run speed is normalized. Likewise, Asura feel like they're flying. Some people (myself included) find it detracts from the game, your millage may vary.

- For what it's worth, Norn look insanely cool in full armor (especially plate) and Charr have an awesome four-legged run animation, so there's silver
lining everywhere.

3. Buy a copper Mining Pick, Harvesting Sickle and Logging axe as soon as you have the money (You'll receive some free tools at level 9). There aren't any gathering 'professions', so everyone
can gather everything so long, but only so long as they have the tools. Resource nodes show up on your mini-map (Grey rock, green leaves, brown log pile)
and are instanced for everyone. You don't need to rush to mine a Copper node just because someone is running towards it, you will have your own copy
waiting just for you.

4. Likewise, buy a basic Salvage Kit (You'll receive a free one at level 12). You use these to destroy unwanted items, turning them into crafting materials. This is the primary method for getting
cloth and leather, actually. You will also get items from enemies that serve no purpose other than to be salvaged, and will be labelled as such.

5. You don't need to be at a waypoint to travel; you can open your map and travel to any waypoint you've previously visited at any time.

6. If you want more inventory space right away, check the trading post; the prices are usually very low for 8 and 10 slot backs. The shortcut is "o".
Alternatively, you can take up any of the armor crafting professions (Armorsmith, Leatherworker, Tailor) as all three can produce bags right away.

7. You get weapon swapping at level 15 (unless you're an Elementalist or Engineer), and unlock utility slots at 13, 17 and 19. Elite skills unlock at
level 31.

8. For a quick level or two, explore your race's starting city.
When you open your map there will be a checklist of the waypoints (Diamonds), Points of Interest (Small squares), and Vistas (Two Red Triangles), all of
which give you XP just for visiting them. It also nets you some money and goodies (most notably, Transmutation Charges) for fully completing the map.

9. Learn to dodge early! Most enemies have a 'wind up' animation just before they deliver a large attack. The default dodge key is V.

- Red Circles on the ground are enemy AOE attacks; dodge out of those too.

Seriously, this cannot be emphasized enough. Dodging completely mitigates damage so long as you're in the dodge animation, and can be
used to avoid even the most powerful blows. It is essential you make dodging a reflex as soon as possible.

10. When your health reaches zero, you aren't automatically killed; instead you enter a 'downed' state where you can defeat an enemy (or heal
yourself if none are around) to rally back at half health. Keep an eye open for a blue "V" symbol over other players, or on your mini-map; this indicates
another played who has been downed, and you can revive them (default key: f). You'll even get some experience for helping out.

11. Wander around and do stuff. One of the biggest complaints people new to the game have is that there isn't any direction it shoos you towards.
There are traditional quests (marked with hearts on your map), but the real meat of GW2 are events which can happen anywhere at any time.
Pay attention to your surroundings; people will often run up to you and ask for help, or you'll see signs that something is amiss (people are sick and the
well water is green? Follow the pipes to investigate the water supply.)

12. Whisper any of the officers (listed in the OT) to get an invite to GAF guild where your questions will be quickly answered.
You can be part of GAF Guild regardless of which server you are on (we play on Stormbluff Isle though), and you can join multiple guilds as well.
Friends and family are welcome!

Be aware that your server choice really only affects World vs. World. You are able to temporarily transfer to any server in your region
(North America / Europe), which is called "guesting". Because World vs. World is basically server vs. server, you'll only be able to represent your
home server in that mode, however.

13. We use Mumble, and have a GAF server just for our guild; talking is optional but being able to listen helps, especially for missions.
We also tend to hang out and get overly excited about new features. The address/port information for Mumble can be found by quoting the OT; it will appear
at the top inside the e-mail tags. Please use your GAF Name as your username to avoid confusion.

14. You can also register at GAFGuild.com. We post all sorts of events and discuss things a little more indepth than we do here, to keep this
thread open for general discussion without getting bogged down.

QUICK TIPS
- There are no mailboxes anywhere, because you can send and receive mail anywhere via messenger pigeons.

- Likewise, you can buy and sell on the trading post from anywhere. However, any items you buy, or any money you make from selling, can only be
picked up at a Trader NPC (marked as a golden scale icon on your map).

- You can click the small gear in the upper right corner of your inventory and select "Deposit all Collectables" to automatically send any crafting materials to
your bank. These items appear on the "Collectables" tab at your bank, a special space that holds all of that stuff for you instead of forcing you to hoard it in
your regular storage space.

- Your bank space, wallet and wardrobe (including miniatures and dyes) is shared between all of your characters.

- There is no mob tagging in the traditional sense; as long as you do above a certain threshold of damage, you will get credit and looting rights regardless of
who attacked first. Usually one hit is enough.

The Living Story:
Here's what you've missed, story-wise. Spoilers for the Living Story: Season One:
A Sylvari named Scarlet Briar unintentionally unlocked a suppressed part of her mind, allowing an Elder Dragon to manipulate her into doing its bidding.
Towards this end, she united several racial factions together in an effort to combine their technology and magic. Her efforts culminated in a series of probes
used to determine the path of ley lines, streams of magical energy that run through the world. Finding the ideal location in the ruins of old Lion's Arch, she
unleashed her army upon the city, burning it to the ground. Using a massive drill, she attempted to disrupt the magical energy and redirect it towards a
slumbering Elder Dragon. Though the players killed her, they were unable to stop the drill and the dragon, Mordremoth, was seen stirring in its lair. The
destruction of Scarlet's Drill destroyed what was left of Lion's Arch.

A more detailed explanation of the first season can be found here.

GUILD POLICIES
BAN POLICIES:
Short Version: We might insta-kick you just to stop certain behavior, but we will always address problems on a one-on-one basis and issue warnings.
Warnings:
Depending on the severity of the issue, a warning will likely be issued. All warnings are posted in the Officer's Lounge section of GAFGuild.com where they can be tracked and discussed. A warning carries no penalties, it just means we asked you to stop something and will notice if you keep doing it.

Guild Removal:
In most cases, an officer will contact the member and address the situation. In rare cases, to immediately stop any major disruption, a member will be removed right away (for example, to stop a heated argument in guild chat). Removals are not necessarily permanent, as once the situation is resolved the member will be welcome back.

Repeat offenders may be banned permanently, from GAFGuild, GAFGuild.com and/or the Mumble server. Being banned at one does not necessarily mean being banned at all (some people are just disruptive in Mumble, others on the site, etc.)

DRAMA POLICIES:
Short Version: Don't be a dick.
Note: Please keep in mind our drama policy extends to Map and Say chat, where your behavior may reflect negatively on GAF as a whole. [GAF] is pretty well known amongst the guilds on our server and we have a good relationship with most of them. We would like to keep it this way.
Swearing / Language
We have no official restriction on language, as everyone in GAFGuild is expected to be old enough to have a GAF Account. We want it to be a place where GAFers can hang out and relax. That said, personal insults of any kind will not be tolerated, and all homophobic / sexist / racist comments/jokes will receive a warning. Sexually explicit conversation should probably be kept to whispers.

Trolling
If we notice a member is actively baiting or antagonizing others\, we'll come down on it. Nobody should be subject to intentional harassment or annoyance while playing.

Excessive Negativity
The game is not perfect, and we want people to discuss all aspects of the game both positive and negative. However, we don't want habitual complaints and/or negativity to create an unpleasant atmosphere in the game. As such, members who are consistently negative to the point where it disrupts chat will generally receive a warning to be more constructive or take it to the forums (either GAFGuild or NeoGAF) where it is not disrupting the gameplay experience of other members.

"Other" Issues
No policy can predict the multitude of ways in which players will behave, so from time to time we may update the policy to address certain issues which we would like to discourage. They are as follows;
  • Please do not sell dungeon runs to guild mates. If you want to take the risk of selling a dungeon run to other players, that's your business, but your guild mates are not a built-in market for your bullshit.
CULLING POLICIES
Short Version: Sometimes we need to make space in the guild, if you got kicked just ask to be re-invited.
What is Culling?
Guild Wars 2 currently has a cap of 500 accounts per guild. Due to the large size of the GAF community, to get as many active players into the main guild as possible we often kick a large number of inactive players from the guild. We refer to this as "Culling" and despite claims to the contrary, has never been personal or motivated by reasons other than simple house keeping.

How do you determine who is Active?
We simply make use of the game's "Last Online" feature and remove large chunks of players who have not played since a certain date (usually folks who haven't played in the last 3-4 months). Our policy has always been that active players who were accidentally kicked are probably active enough to notice, while those who are away from the game will never notice if they're not logging in in the first place. We will generally post in the OT when we're going to be removing inactive players just in case someone wants to make sure they aren't removed.

I've been kicked out! What do I do?!
Relax. Don't take it personally. Whisper any of the officers or post in the OT to get re-invited immediately.

GUILD BANK POLICIES
Short Version: Bank items are first come-first serve.
The Guild Bank currently has 3 tabs; the Guild Stash (50 slot), Treasure Trove (100 slot) and Deep Cave (100 slot).

The Guild Stash is available for all players on a first-come-first-serve basis. Items you leave in the bank can and will be taken out by any player. This also includes money! If you wish to donate directly to the guild, please deposit it into the Deep Cave or mail it directly to an officer.

The Treasure Trove is used for the Guild Lottery (including lottery prizes) and any extra items. If you see any item you would like, ask; chances are nobody is keeping it for any particular reason.

The Deep Cave is deposit-only and is used by the officers, to keep items that are intended to benefit the entire guild. This is usually high-end crafting materials, potions, or holiday items. This is also where we keep the transfer fund, used to help players transfer from non-SBI servers (preferably those who are not in the NA Datacenter).

Sadly, this is the only point at which most people will have more posts than Hawkian. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Haha. I'll try my best. Remind me how you look at the wall of shame? I've been told numerous times but I always forget, it's probably really simple.

I knew it was something simple, thanks guys. The community for this game is quite brilliant as far as gaming goes, although that's mainly thanks to the guild.

Ooh! Looks awesome Retro. Two things I caught:

-Include your Lottery scratch-off card after the schedule image? (Can't believe it doesn't say Guild Mission Saturday Night Fever but fiiiiiine ;D)
-Remove my guide on understanding item names (the first link). Since the April 15th patch it no longer applies (and item names make very little sense at all, for that matter :'()

I knew it was something simple, thanks guys. The community for this game is quite brilliant as far as gaming goes, although that's mainly thanks to the guild.

The game makes it obscenely easy. All we do is invite people and show up at the scheduled missions and makeups (and we purposely have enough officers that if even a bunch can't make it, there's plenty to get things going). Aside from the occasional housekeeping and Hythloday keeping guild upgrades running like clockwork, that's it.

No raid times to schedule, no political infighting for precious main tank / off tank / main healer / off healer raid slots (Main Tanks have the worst ego / attitude in gaming, bar none), no recruitment drives, no representation or play requirements. No RNG loot rolls to fight over (one of my old guilds imploded because the GM gave a weapon to a female guildmate he was wooing). The game wants everyone to work together and have a good time and get equally rewarded which means the inherent level of drama present in the game is zilch.

Beyond that, we have a clear guild policy that's lenient in all the right places but stops drama before it starts (I can count on one hand the number of people we've banned, two hands just for warnings). We've had very few instances where people form little cliques within the guild, and they're usually open enough that calling them 'cliques' seems totally unjustified. They're more like groups of players who just regularly run dungeons around the same time every day.

Most importantly, everybody is friendly, helpful and respectful. We don't have anybody trolling, stirring up trouble or holding grudges (at least not that I'm aware of, if so they're not doing it publicly). The most disruptive thing that happens in guild chat is when I start in on the puns, and I've been told that they are both obnoxious and endearing so the vote is out on that one.

It practically runs itself.

So in honor of the new thread, I want to try starting my "I talked about this months and months ago" dungeon idea.

DUNGEON MASTERS - Saturdays 2pm EST - Beginning May 17
Each Saturday that I'm available, I will try to run anywhere between 1-3 dungeons depending on length of each path. Rather than run a single dungeon all at once like a lot of events do, we are going to go through each story, then each path 1, path 2, etc. If you are not at a level to join us the first go round, I will try to take requests once we have completed all of the dungeons the first time through.
We will not be speed running. If this is your first time through or you have only done speed runs and you want to watch cutscenes, watch the cutscenes!

So... Up first! AC & CM Stories!

Ascalonian Catacombs
Story Recommended level: 30
This is the first dungeon encounter in game located in Plains of Ashford. Its a rather easy dungeon so please feel free to join in if you are new to the game or have never run a dungeon previously. It is fine even if you are not quite level 30.

Caudecus's Manor
Story Recommended level: 40
This is the second dungeon that becomes available located in Queensdale. You will find that not many people run it partially because the stats and looks aren't as desired and it is a bit of a shock to anyone expecting the same easiness as AC (which originally was actually a much harder dungeon). However, it is one of the more unique dungeons you can do. Highly recommended to bring any stability you might have since there are a lot of knockdowns and fears.

Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
Oooh aftanoon dungeons!

Sorry I can't make this one but I'll be sure to take part when I can.

AC and CM story are rather nice and easy, a good intro course for dungeon running. Braxzy ran his first AC Story yesterday and we 4-manned it (he wasn't even 30)!

The game does do a very good job of mitigating any sort of contest between people throughout the game. When I'm trying to do a quest or event and there are others, it is indeed easy and pleasant. Except when I'm trying to challenge myself by soloing something and people show up, damn them to the [InsertHellTypePlaceInGWLoreHere?].

As for the guild, everyone has been insanely helpful and polite with me as I get to grips with the game and it's always a lot of fun doing something with other guildies instead of solo. I'm surprised I haven't annoyed anyone yet with all my questions, apologies if I ask too many :L

AC was pretty cool, the little back stories make them a bit more interesting than your typical dungeons. Thanks guys for getting me through that, even though I could have easily solo'd it ;)

No chance.

Awesome idea for an event. I'll add this below the guild schedule and if it becomes a regular thing I'll even re-do the graphic for it.
Edit: OT Updated.

Also, if you're unavailable, the other officers and I can probably make sure the scheduled event happens. Most of us love running dungeons anyways, so any excuse is welcome.

I'm surprised I haven't annoyed anyone yet with all my questions, apologies if I ask too many :L

I mentioned this in the last thread, but I really hope I'm on when you get into the Bazaar next week and can kinda tag along behind you. Answering questions and helping new players out is a way to re-experience well-worn content with a fresh pair of eyes.

I charge 600 gems for tag alongs! The VIP experience with emote reactions is 1000.

I still don't fully get what the bazaar is so I'd appreciate a guide haha.

Btw, how come the OT doesn't have the funky review graphic that was in the last?

I charge 600 gems for tag alongs! The VIP experience with emote reactions is 1000.

I still don't fully get what the bazaar is so I'd appreciate a guide haha.

The term "bazaar" refers to the lore that the Zephyrites have flown into town to sell the goods they accumulate traveling around the world (but actually there were just a bunch of cooking ingredient vendors).

Really we're referring to the zone that was created. It was beautiful, vertical, and had tons of achievements and mini-games. I was out on PvE at the time but I ended up with the quartz node because the zone was just that great.

So is it just a temporary zone that comes into fruition during an event? Is it easy to get to or do you need to travel there? *Fingers crossed for an Asura Gate*

Should I start playing this game again?

Yes. I play it now, that's all the persuasion needed. Right guys?

Yeah we "took an airship" there from LA last time. You can't walk there. Here's where the zone is located relative to Mount Maelstrom:

Btw, how come the OT doesn't have the funky review graphic that was in the last?

We burned through the OT1 in less than a month (started 8/21, ended 9/19). Way too early to get any kind of press. We couldn't do jack shit with the OT2, which ended just shy of a month before the game's first anniversary. It seemed like a good opportunity to collect all of the Game of the Year / MMO of the Year awards GW2 had earned, especially since they had added Laurels in the interim and I can't pass up that kind of imagery. And the whole Evilore quote was the cherry on top (er, at the bottom).

We don't need to flaunt review scores or accolades anymore, four OTs and almost two years later....

But if we wanted to, the game sits at 90 on Metacritic (which doesn't take into account Polygon's updated 9.0), 3 points behind genre-defining WoW (currently the highest rated MMO) and 2 points ahead of the next highest-rated MMO (EVE Online with 88). Well ahead of stuff like FFXIV (83, though they got a do-over with ARR, their original score was 49, yikes!), TOR (85) or TESO (72). GW2 rests in the company of PC games like Portal, The Sims 2, Civ 5 and Halflife 2: Episode 2.

Not an airship, a ship! We docked at the base of the cliffs... there was even a
wind power-up
on the boat.

This time, speculating from the video, it looks like Divinity's Reach will be sponsoring hot-air balloons to get us there.

There are lot of confusing names flying around I know:
-The zone we traveled to and will be again is called the Labyrinthine Cliffs. it's beautiful...
-The massive airship that is landing there is called the Zephyr Sanctum. Its inhabitants are the Zephyrites, who are some of the most skilled practitioners of Air Magic in Tyria, and renowned merchants.
-The occasion/event that they are coming for is called The Bazaar of the Four Winds, basically a trading festival.

Technically, the Bazaar could be held anywhere, and the Zephyr Sanctum can, well, fly, so in the future they might travel to other locales. But this time around at least we'll still be in the Labyrinthine Cliffs.

That's a good point. It looks cool though :D

Guild Wars 2 |OT4| BraXzy doesn't have a clue what he's doing, and you'll probably hear about it soon enough.
