Splatoon has one similarity to GW2; whenever two teams clash, the last one standing is the one that gets to have all his revived teammates up at mid while the other team has to walk/swim back from spawn. The mechanics that allow this to happen are different, but the result is often the same.

Wow at the $5000 dollars spent on gems over a week guy on reddit.

That's just crazy.

Wonder how ANET feels about making money from people who clearly have a gambling problem, I guess it's nothing they can do about it.

Gambling is a serious problem. I hope those who suffer from it get the help they need, because it's a destructive thing.

I will leave work as soon as possible but I can't promise a specific time right now.

Other build ideas include thief or mesmer to invis friendly NPCs and/or portal supply to generate them, as well as power necro to wail on guard NPCs. But I probably won't if I don't have time to practice.

Unless he somehow tells a fantasy of his in the comments, seems like he won't miss those $5000.

More money to continue making the game I guess.

Just some extra details from his post:

General Information About Me and this Situation

  • Yes, I did spend a little over $5,000 real-world dollars on Guild Wars 2 Gems in under 1 week.
  • Yes, I am aware of the impulsive nature of this purchase.
  • No, a perfectly normal person would not do this.
  • Yes, I DO have a problem; I gamble impulsively.Thankfully I make more than enough money to manage it while seeking treatment.
  • No, I do not suggest that you go out and spend thousands of dollars on a video game unless you can handle that level of expenditure. (Even then, its likely that your wife will put you on the couch for a week)
  • Yes, I have done this type of "binge purchase" before. I had a thing for RuneScape for nearly 9 years and blew about $3.5k USD when they released micro transactions. Fun? Yes. Stupid? Of Course.

One last tidbit since some people seem concerned about my health.

I have been receiving treatment quite successfully for years. This "stumble" occurred as the direct result of a car accident which put me onto heavy narcotics. I was not myself, and my inhibitions were lowered so I reverted to old habits. Thankfully I am getting back on my feet and regaining my health.

Yeah, I read that this morning and it's really sad. I mean, if someone has that kind of disposable income and really loves / wants to support the game, maybe... but this guy sounds like he has a real problem and needs help, even if this is "just a relapse." I wonder if he gambles in MMOs because he's somehow unable to gamble elsewhere.

Either way, it sounds tragic and I hope he continues to get help. He mentioned a car accident and drugs played a role in his purchase, but this kind of thing can't possibly happen every time something bad happens to him without it eventually taking its toll.

I would be shocked and kind of appalled if the wife and I together have bought even a fifth of what he spent in a week over ~3 years. It might get up there only if you factor in the $300 collector's edition (which only one of us got). Crazy.

Great to see so much support for gambling addiction. It used to be (10 years ago) that people made fun of people who where addicted to video game, but the micro transaction nature of modern F2P games, have changed many peoples perception.

One of the problem with real gambling and video game addictions is that the outcome is unknown. When you're on substance addictions, you know the outcome. When you smoke, sniff, eat or inject something there is no stimuli in the surprise. You merely try to reach another state of being.
You don't have that with gaming. It's why the whole "Stop the RNG" is really an oxymoron against all of gaming. If you really think about it, most of video games is their ability to surprise you by something cool happening if you are interacting long enough. That is not just a subset of RPG but almost any game.

Good luck to PvP GAF and yes I'm still salty I can't play with you.

We don't know yet if any rules will have changed so be watchful.

Having a bunker isn't bad if he can run supply when not supporting the NPC push. But he can't push alone.

Beware the mass archer strategy. You need 2-3 people to defend against it.

Against bad teams you can 3-4 man offense. Against good teams of say 3 man defense until you see an opportunity to 3-4 man push. Once you clear the first gate, immediately go back to defense while someone kills off the guards, then gather supply to push through the second gate.

Can't help with builds, but basically even the current meta builds will work if you rotate properly and react well.

Oh, yeah, don't be afraid to rotate. Make sure you have condi and stealth burst defenses covered too.

He gambles in MMOs because he's an addict and it's available to him. At the core it's the same issue regardless of where it occurs.

As for $5000 in gems....wow. If I did that my wife would kill me, probably literally, with a knife or something.

Group splits and dealing with NPCs will be the trickiest parts. Our main tactic will have to be good communication to compensate for a lack of experience.

For example you mention an archer rush, but that's later in the game right? I don't think you want to start off too heavy on archers.

In the beta, the hero NPCs seemed to be super valuable. But you have to be able to grab them without wrecking everything your team is doing as a whole. It's tricky because the channel point is pinged a full 30 seconds before it spawns. When we get in those skirmishes, it's not necessarily about wiping the other squad as much as harassing them away while one person secures the channel with stability.

I'm a little concerned staff ele will be lacking oomph; thinking about bringing power necro.

That's the one to get if you're buying one of those tools right?

Yup, the chance of dropping sprockets on anything you mine make it worth mining everything you come across. I think someone on Reddit once calculated that with the exception of Ori, your time is better spent doing other activities other than stopping to mine. It was kind of hilarious.

I usually pack stand your ground with my Medi guardian build; I'm thinking about a super mobile support condi clear build for NPC defense. I guess it depends on our profession setup.

Me: medi guard, zerker neck, infiltration runes
Moondrop: staff Ele / power Necro
Lump: mes
Wanderer: ?
Kanik: staff Ele

Eh, I'm kind of with Proven; I wouldn't spec too hard into support.

And you missed my post yesterday; Lump said he's running hambow, Wanderer celestial rifle engi, and Kanik bearbow.

Ok hmm. I'll look that stuff up later myself. Any of you going to be on earlier for practice? Also, the EU tournament starts at 3 pm (1 hour and change from now), I'd watch guild wars 2' twitch channel to get an idea of what has been changed.

During the last beta, some teams we faced against just summoned four archers at the start. One or two don't do much damage, but if three or four focus on one player they actually do decent enough damage to turn a fight, even with guards at your back. A supply runner would send two more and then five or six archers breathing down your neck forces you to take them out at extreme range or burn them down while they're blind spammed or distracted by a door. After you've secured the gate with 3-6 archers you can then easily send in doorbreakers.

Archer strength en masse was the one reason I disagreed with most people's assessment that they needed to be more useful. I'd prefer if their numbers or use were tweaked, but currently they surprisingly have a use. I don't want to advocate this strategy until I see what changes have been made, if any, to the mode. But keep it in mind and consider using it yourself. I just don't know if it has an easy counter or if primary archers is the actual best strategy.

Ah, gotcha. From the sound of it, that doesn't sound like an issue for him though.

Yeah, I guess in my mind if I was going to gamble it'd be for real money, and since there's online poker and everything now I can't see why he wouldn't do that... unless he did something like gamble more than he could pay and was blacklisted or something. I dunno how casinos work, seems like they'd want to do everything in their power to let addicts keep playing.

I guess it's just weird to me that instead of any real winnings, he just has fake, digital ones.

Wasn't there something about online poker sites banning US players because of some law?

Not a clue. I don't gamble (my personal philosophy is, if I put money into a machine, I better get at least a game of Ms. Pacman out of it) so I don't really follow along with how casinos operate. I would imagine if you walked in and gambled money you didn't have, they'd kick your ass out, but... /shrug.

Ok I've slipped out of work. Grabbing food then I should be ready to practice in an hour.

As I think about it more, why wouldn't we all bring skirmishing builds? There are no points to hold. Even defense is a matter of killing.

Well if the NPCs are being skirmished, we'll have a funny draw on our hands.

I saw the changes; it might be worth trying to intentionally be behind on points by 10 or 5 by the 12:00 mark to get a hero close by to push for points.

Speaking of heroes, I think a support of two archers with the guy will be helpful.

Also there's the interest of someone who could back up treb the lanes. Anyone on the team feel confident on a treb?
