Guild Wars 2 |OT5| We've got fun and games

I want to run around the Guild Hall when it comes but I already have such little time to play any games lately that buying HoT will be hard to justify. :(

This is the type of shit that is going to make the Guild Arena amazing. People already designing game modes for it.

Excellent Missions as always, despite a hiccup with the Quaggans, the Branded Challenge, Snowden Puzzle, Sotzz Bounty and (horrible) Karka Rush went well enough.

Makeup Missions are tomorrow at 3pm Eastern / Noon Pacific.

A preview of the new skill/trait changes will be streaming on the Guild Wars 2 twitch channel Monday, though it's just a bunch of twitch folks and not any actual devs so... unless you're into that sort of thing... yeah.

Tuesday is Update Day, expect a few bug fix and server crash patches as is normal with big updates. Lots of changes and updates including the new Lion's Arch. We do not currently have any activities planned, but I would expect GAFers to be running around all day and / or hanging out in mumble.

Have a good weekend folks!

It's a bunch of twitch folks, but a number of them are known for making builds or studying the metagame. Chem is a major WvW guy, Five Gauge is on Abjured, Jebro is the center of EU GW2 PvP casting, etc. The only thing I would have done to make this lineup better is add a member from [DnT]. Having good or thoughtful players showing off builds rather than devs is honestly pretty cool to me.

I heard a rumor that they're playing on test servers over the weekend to prepare for the stream too. Take it with a grain of salt, but it's believable that they'd have a build to show off immediately instead of spending a chunk of the stream dicking around.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I made a few 18-slot bags and stuck em in the Guild Stash for new players who need bigger bags.

Ooh, I was actually about to ask about bags. I just have the one free 4 slotter you get at like level 3 or whatever, I wasn't sure how difficult it is to get bags.

I'll be on in an hour or so, if there are any left I'll try to find my way to a guild stash and if not that's ok too

I don't expect they'll be going very fast, take as many as you need.

I seriously doubt taking the guild halls will be hard, honestly. Smaller guilds would rage.

I hope you are right about this. Guild Halls are a giant feature of HoT, and I'd hate to be unable to partake.
Ideally it'd scale, so huge guilds would have some resistance and not just truck through in minutes.

Bested by the 3 day bank requirement! No big deal though, finding the guild banker gave me an excuse to explore the city and get some exp.

Wait, did I miss something? Will there be a new crafting profession? I thought the Scribe was a system implemented in the Guild Halls?

It's a crafting profession, but for guilds. I don't know if they can make anything that's usable outside your guild.

Yeah, I just meant that it's not any kind of new information being revealed or anything so it's not super important to tune in unless you're into that sort of thing. Maybe I worded it wrong.

Let's guess what existing materials may comprise the 0-400 levels of the new Scribe crafting profession.

Leather, refined into parchment. Scribes aren't actually creating the new items, they're creating schematics that you then feed into the Aetheric assembly device. Those are inscribed on something, right?

I've been hanging onto all sorts of leather waiting for it to go up for ages now, hopefully this is the thing that does it.

I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like it's actually a new crafting profession you learn on your character. It's guild-centric, but it sounds like it's on a per-character basis.

Asked in the chat but nobody knew for sure :) Is Anet removing the trait hunt aspect on Tuesday when the new specializations come out? Ie, can my non-mains get access to all specializations without hunting down x amount of chests and bosses all over the map? Assuming they're lvl 80 of course.

I'm pretty sure they're switching over to the new Profession reward track system. Read more here; https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/specializations-part-two-reward-tracks-and-elite-specializations/

Starting Make-up Missions!

Thickened leather will rise again!

People have been paying so little for leather that instead of throwing it away for next to nothing I've just been stockpiling it in my personal GBank, in addition to scooping up some of the super cheap varieties just in case they ever go up. I won't be rich by any stretch, but anything is better than getting ~20 silver for a whole stack.

Thanks thats great news!

Yeah, if you've done a bunch of skill challenges and reached level 80 you should be good on Hero Points.

While you have a point, there's also always the chance of last minute changes since the last stream being baked in. On the official forums there's still talk and a few developer posts going on about tweaks to certain traits or skills.

As for Leather, good point. That would be a great way to take care of that issue and I have leather to sell too.

Scribe is an entirely new crafting profession. It is 100% the ninth fully fledged crafting profession. Its primary difference is that the Scribe crafting station can only be found in Guild Halls. The uncertainty I'm running into is that you may not be able to take up Scribe unless you own Heart of Thorns.

Good point, it'd be a chance to see any last minute changes they sneak in. Plus, not much else is going on Monday.

No worries, smack that brother-in-law for uninstalling.

I'm told NeoGAF was getting DDOS'd

Not surprising, but the morons are a week late, it would have been better to do it during E3.

Why isn't it surprising that GAF might be hit with a DDoS attack? Did anything in particular happen?

There aren't many gaming sites / forums with a reputation like GAF, really. Hell, they only shut down five subreddits for harassment and one of them was exclusively for hating on GAF.

Should be getting my internet tomorrow at my new place so I can try the update on Tuesday, hope all the massive changes coming don't break the servers.

Realistically, there will probably be some bugs, but probably nothing that makes the game unplayable. There will probably be a couple quick fixes for bugs or server crashes.

I'm expecting at least five hotfixes that require game restarts, and an entire two days of people being so confounded by the changes that all world bosses fail because they forgot to set up their traits again. :p

Engineers are wrecking pvp for me. I don't mind the bad ones, but running into a good one is a real buzzkill. Its not even the losing, its just the inevitable and predictable way the fight goes. Unless I'm knocked into a corner, then its mostly over. I can hang a bit on warrior/guardian, sometimes even win, but anything else and its a curbstomp. Too much stuff to dodge, too many conditions, too many heals, regen, swiftness, dodges, geh.

Not crazy about them getting even better Tuesday.

Just read the blog post about guild teams and it says someday they may move beyond just pvp. my first thought to this is fractal guild teams. Ever since HoT announced it will have challenging group content ive been wondering where fractal dungeons is going to fit in the game going forward. It would be cool to have competing guild teams in fractals maybe turn them into challenge mode dungeons complete with leaderboards basically Im really curious whats going to happen to fractals lol

The current cele engie? What other classes do you want help with against them? I'll admit that the class I've been using most in PvP as of late is Condi Warrior, so I might not be able to help as much. Best advice I can give you is that your builds need to adapt harder to the apex predator on the block.

Celestial Amulet is getting nerfed tomorrow and will be slightly toned down relative to the other amulets even with the 30% boost everyone is getting. My current prediction is that PvP won't see a 30% boost and that the average 3-stat amulet will get a 1000-750-750 split and Celestial will get a 400-500*7 split, but we'll see how that goes.

Anyone tech savvy in here? :) I was thinking of dropping my resolution from 1080 to 720, since I can barely reach 30 fps in the best of circumstances. But when I change from windowed fullscreen to 720, this happens:

720 with just scan on my 1080p TV

Even with jpg and imgur compression, that picture is of better quality than what I experience on my screen :lol This happens in several games on steam, but far from all, forcing me to play most games in 1080 even though my pc can't handle it properly :/ I have an old Radeon hd4870 card, connected to the TV with a dvi to hdmi cable. Playstation 3 games in 720p is no problem on the same screen, the TV itself supports it fine, but iirc, dropping Windows 7 to that resolution looks about the same in crappiness.

My 1v1 counter-engi tips are that they are generally susceptible to condis (particularly after they use their healing turret) and CC (particularly while they're using their healing turret), but otherwise you don't want to focus them down specifically in a team fight but rather drive them off point and away from allies.

Best advice I can give you is that your builds need to adapt harder to the apex predator on the block.
I think I may have to try condi warrior if I can't pull off an axebow in the new system. Biggest warrior trait overhaul is to arms line; the crit-bleed synergies look too good.

Edit: You can basically condi shoutbow with the new system can't you? Good lord.

Here's a non-celestial PvP take on the Terrior build (finally true to Ike's original Apothecary idea):

1. Strength
1a. Restorative Strength
1b. Body Blow
1c. Distracting Strikes
2. Arms
2a. Opportunist
2b. Unsuspecting Foe
2c. Burst Precision
4. Tactics
4a. Leg Specialist
4b. Shrug It Off
4c. Vigorous Shouts
Sword+Mace/Hammer + Doom/Torment sigils
Healing Surge!/Shake It Off!/For Great Justice!/Fear Me!/Battle Standard
Settler gear + Trooper runes

Amulet choice is the tricky part for a condi shout warrior as celestial and magi are the only ones with healing power and precision. But this build should be able to generate crits using the Arms traits while being tanky and disruptive and supportive.

Completely missed all the pricing talk. Eh, $50 doesn't bother me, but it sure does suck for the people who recently bought the base game thinking they had to for the expansion.

I mean, do I agree with all the ranting and raving? Not necessarily, but Anet knew what they were walking into there with that pricing.

I'm curious to see how the expansion does for them. I'm not seeing a lot of buzz for it, and Anet's own push for it has been weird. I'm kind of on the fence as well. I think at this point, I'd need a whole overhaul of the combat system to get interested again, not just an overhaul of the professions.

A quick update on this one -> After feedback from presenting the original hero point count – we decided getting to level 80 will give you enough hero points to unlock all the core skills and traits entirely. Doing hero challenges (aka skill challenges) will simply allow you to earn all the skills/traits earlier before level 80. With the release of HoT, there will be options to spend the excess hero points earned from doing hero challenges in the world.

There are a number of other changes on 6/23 to make the experience from 1-80 more exciting, better-paced, rewarding, and fun as well after having the time to evaluate and player feedback from the updates last year.

Yeah, I've been considering adapting my build to be partial Shoutbow as I'm already in Tactics for other reasons. Switch the Master and Grandmaster, flip a few utilities, and I'm already halfway there. I just don't want to use Cleansing Ire but I don't know how reliant the build is on it; I'd hope "Shake It Off!" and Trooper Runes would be enough Condi removal wise.

Actually, the real reason I'd want to try it is because of the reworked Healing Surge is now a Shout.

This is awesome.

Also, PvP Amulet changes: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/pvp/PvP-Amulets-from-preview-client

Summary:
3 stat = 1200/900/900
Cele = 560 each

All Amulets not Celestial have been made into 3 stat amulets. Added two new amulets to have the same stats as old Berserker and Valkyrie, named Marauder and Crusader respectively. For 4 stat, 1050/1050/560/560.

OK so I logged on for the first time in over a year this past weekend. I am so lost that it is frustrating. Can you guys help?

OK so I have a lvl 80 Guardian that has what looks like 3 pieces of exotic gear from running AC. The rest of my gear is rare or fine. Should I continue running AC till I get full exotics from the the Tears I collect, then move onto CoF (or another dungeon)?

From the dungeons do I move onto Fractuals? Is that what Im basically doing for end game (PvE)?

I have never touched PvP before, so when does PvP factor into end game? Or is the choice yours where you pick PvP or PvE? PvP is very confusing to me. There's WvW, Edge of Mists, Structured, Ranked, Non-Ranked, etc. Which one should I be doing?

I just want the best looking gear and to get tomes of knowledge for my alts. Can somebody tell me what I should be doing?

I also auto leveled an alt yesterday to lvl 20, but I dont know what to do with him.

New stat totals:
3-stat amulets: 3000
4-stat amulets: 3220 (7.33% over base)
Celestial: 3920 (30.66% over base)

Old stat totals:
3-stat: 2232
Berserker’s: 2364 (5.9% over base)
Celestial: 3066 (37.37% over base)
Hot take: celestial amulet may not have actually been nerfed as much as it appears. On a relative basis, obviously it looks like it's been nerfed. But consider that the stat totals have been increased significantly on an absolute basis. The viability of a build is not merely about how it stacks up relative to other builds but what it can do against foes. Therefore if celestial amulet has the raw stats to still be tanky while putting out hybrid damage, and at first glance it very well may, then it's not going anywhere.

Berserker vs. Marauder will at least have burst builds make a choice, so that's cool.

Edit: No 4-stat equivalent to the old Rampager, huh.

Guild Wars 2 doesn't do the dungeon grind thing for gear tiers. It's purely cosmetic. If you have enough Karma, you can get a full set of "endgame" exotics from the temples in Orr, each Temple has a different stat set. Or you can craft your Exotic armour, or just buy a full set off the AH. Or do WvW until you can buy a full set of Exotics using WvW tokens.

I recommend doing all the dungeons for fun, since they're interesting, and their Story mode has a side-story relevant to the main Personal Story. And the Explore Paths for each dungeon are interesting in their own right, for the mechanics of the fights, sequences, or bosses.

Fractals is additional content to do for fun, and the occasional reward like Fractals skins, or tokens you can use to get Ascended trinkets (you can also use Laurels for getting those, or play WvW).

There is no traditional end-game in GW2, you just do whatever activity sounds fun: dungeon runs, sPVP, World vs World, Fractals, World Bosses, etc. There is nothing you "should" be doing.

sPvP is it's own seperate thing, where your PvE gear isn't used (everyone is normalized). So think of it like a team deathmatch client you load up and play in, either ranked or unranked. Either one will let you progress along "Reward Tracks" for gear, skins, etc (check out the sPvP panel for more info).

World vs World uses your PvE gear, and is a big three-way PvP between three servers, on multiple maps (a "home" map, and a central map). You can invade the home maps of other servers, or duke it out in Eternal Battleground. Edge of the Mists is a kind of WvW "lobby" map you can do stuff in while waiting for your WvW queue to pop.

Tomes of Knowledge can be easily gotten from doing sPvP reward tracks. Best looking gear, well, that's up to your personal preference. Half my gear is level 20 skins over my Ascended items. "Looks" don't really equal "stats" in this game. If you like the look of the Arah dungeon set, you'll have to run the Arah dungeon until you have enough tokens to buy the skins you want, and so on.

Structured PvP doesn't really fit in anywhere: I know people who bought GW2, loaded up into sPvP, and never left it. To them, sPvP is the game they play. I pop into sPvP now and then when I feel the urge for it, and here on GAF a lot of others consider it their primary play. PvE and sPVP, like in Guild Wars 1, are very much their own things, but you *do* benefit from doing either, in the other, since rewards you get in one can be used in the other (like skins, or Tomes, etc).

Each Dungeon has a different set of armor stat selections to choose from, as well as their own looks. With the transmutation system once you unlock a skin you want you can put it on the armor with the stats you want. So if you want the AC stats or skins, you can keep running it and unlock what you need and then move onto other dungeons depending on what you want. For instance, CoF is popular for having Berserker armor stat options, but maybe you like the AC skins more. So there's incentive to do both.

The little table here lists the stat options from each dungeon and links to the skin galleries as well, though the easiest way to browse the skins would be to preview from the dungeon vendors themselves.

From the dungeons do I move onto Fractuals? Is that what Im basically doing for end game (PvE)?

Fractals can sorta be seen like an end game. The endgame is what you want it to be, as hokey as that might sound. If you like a certain skin, or want a chance at a unique reward (like a Fractal weapon) or you just want to learn another class role in a 5 man party, then you do the content for it. You never have to do anything to get a specific best in slot weapon or something like that.

I have never touched PvP before, so when does PvP factor into end game? Or is the choice yours where you pick PvP or PvE? PvP is very confusing to me. There's WvW, Edge of Mists, Structured, Ranked, Non-Ranked, etc. Which one should I be doing?

PVP is separate from PVE, but WvW is tied to your PVE gear.

PvP- Your stats and runes and sigils are based on the pvp menu and not on what you have equipped in, say, Lions Arch. So you can change on the fly. As for PVP tying into "endgame", it only does if you want a specific reward from a pvp track, similar to running a dungeon if you want a specific armor or whatever. If you want the Balthazar back skin, you have to do some pvp. Or the Glorious Armor. Or maybe you want to supplement some dungeon running with the dungeon related pvp track because honor of the waves paths 2 and 3 suck but that shield skin sure is nice.

Practice mode is basically hot-joining matches in progress and you can swap teams and hop in and out. Rewards are low and mainly it's for getting a feel of a class or map or whatever. Unranked and Ranked have the same rewards/progress towards a pvp track, but ranked gets you onto the leaderboards or whatever. I just do unranked because I'm uninterested in that sort of thing.

As for WvW, it's based on your pve armor and gear. Edge of the Mists is kinda just a loose WvW substitute that people mostly run for easy exp, badges or karma. The borderlands/eternal battlegrounds are where the 3 servers in a match up actually fight.

I just want the best looking gear and to get tomes of knowledge for my alts. Can somebody tell me what I should be doing?

Tomes are most easily gotten through PvP. Most of the tracks (all?) reward Tomes pretty frequently. As for armor, you can look through the skins at a crafting station via the wardrobe and see if you like anything and then you can research how to acquire it. There's dungeon gear, karma gear, crafting has its own skin, Cultural stuff, other themed weapons, some from the gem store. And of course, legendaries.

I also auto leveled an alt yesterday to lvl 20, but I dont know what to do with him.

You could make him just for pvp, or explore a region of the world you haven't yet, or run around in Edge of the Mists for levels, or whatever you want really. Make him learn a crafting discipline your other guy doesn't know. Etc.

I agree. My guard is wearing banded armor shoulders which drop from everything and T1 gloves, but I like those the best. Sometimes the hardest to acquire skins aren't the best looking, lol. Most of the ascended armor skins are really ugly in my opinion.
