Guillermo del Toro says “I’d rather die” than use generative AI

I knew this man was cool.

But sooner or later, everyone will have to or his production cost will balloon and no house might greenlit his projects.

He's right I think. AI will make loads of people incredibly dumb.

It's like sweets. If you eat it here and there, it makes you happy and I daresay improves your enjoyment of life. If you eat it too much, it makes you fat and miserable.

Going from this analogy and looking at most folks future looks pretty grimm.

he will uses it, wether to get an idea across or scene. It's really stupid not to use a tool that can help your movie be better.

The tools all the people use that actually create the things he wants to be made, without a doubt have AI integrated in them and are actively using them.

I agree with him, I ditched GPT and the likes because I realized it was doing just that, and the results were more miss than hit most of the time, but it sure was addicting having a sycophantic bot that agrees with you 24/7.

SORA 2 and Image generators are dumb pieces of tech made to scam people and pollute the internet.

Movies will probably use the same AI techniques that existed before this whole thing and are much more reliable.

AI will make lot of people dumber, so it might ended to cost lower, i guess?
and some talents might lower their price to combat AI, so this could led to lower cost as well?
or everything else will still pricey because lot of thing prices rise as well?
I dunno, everything is possible at this point. I just hope some artist won't lost their skill if they are using automaton much.

"My concern is not artificial intelligence, but natural stupidity."

I mean, he's not wrong about this. Most modern day business models lean on the lack of critical thinking, uninformedness and mass stupidity. Its how some directly anti-consumer practices managed to gain persistence. A better informed populace goes against the very ethos that fat cat businessmen/investors/IBs believe in and learned. It doesn't favour nor profit them to create meaningful material.

If they can get away with producing low quality sludge for a high price-tag, they will.

Generative AI is mostly just a bunch of slop generators and I doubt that will change much in the future. We may have a brief sweet spot, but AI pollution will soon put an end to that.

I think AI models are great right now as sort of interactive encyclopedias. Truly excellent search tools for learning about well established information. As AI generated content takes over the Internet however, I can see even this imploding into nonsense.

just doing my morning browsing, reading the news makes me disappointed
to the wall of generated faces into the pictures placed everywhere

almost all the same person, man or woman
like a default pattern with little variations/things added
crap
