Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- announced (Unreal Engine)

Well, it's not really their first 3D fighter if you count Battle Fantasia. But I'm not sure how much staff would be shared from that game.

I completely forgot about that game. Still, I don't think we'll have more than 18 characters at the start, 20 if we stretch it.

I wonder if this is the PS4 game they were talking about. That would be some great exposure for Arc System Works, to be the first next gen fighting game.

My only complaint is that Ky's j.S wasn't as pretty as it could have been. Oh well in development :P

You're mad jelly that the next KoF won't look as colorful or pretty as this huh =V

How the heck do I watch Nico Nico videos if I'm not a Nico member again?

You can watch them without being one now.

edit: huh, or maybe you still do. Guilty gear vid is accessible without being one though.

I'm very happy about this announcement. But I refuse to use that name.
Can't believe that they even manage to replicate guilty gear's shitty animation.

That's always been intentional - they went out of their way to use weird staggers and choppy hitstun in Battle Fantasia, even though they were perfectly fine with using fluid animation for certain things, like character intros.

Overture is the only exception, and that's because it was some weird pre-MOBA thingy.

Edit: I see this has already been covered multiple times. Whoops, didn't mean to pile on.

Just watched the trailer - I think the day many have waited for has arrived.

This beats even CC2's Naruto cell shaded work, and that stuff was already legitimately amazing.

It looks like they've come up with strategies to replicate even the animation cuts of 2D so it doesn't look overly smooth and robotic at the right times.

Agreed, although to be honest I don't like the sheen on the models too much. Still, it's an impressive effect, and the game looks great as-is; I can't wait to see how it looks once it's further along in development.

Wut, this is X3. Japan has never gone with the X2 name. It's been X then XX now we have XXX *it's in the background*

Wasn't exactly serious...

Anyway, trailer looked sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Haven't really been excited about a fighter in a long time, but this is the sort of thing that's going to rope me back into the genre.

"I think the excellent celshading is the primary reason, not choppy animation."

The cel-shading itself doesn't seem to be superior to CC2's in the Naruto games when you go back and look at the screenshots.

I wouldn't be surprised if the went X3 on localization like they went X2 instead of XX.

I've got a #Reload arcade machine, and I'm freaking out about this. Best breakfast ever.

Also, MK style story mode incoming.

Why wouldn't they just continue with the visual novel art style they've been using?

I always thought it was possible to animate 3d models as if they were a sprite and get the same feel as a 2D fighting game.

To get the feel of an ASW 2D fighting game all they had to do was make it with choppy animation. =P

I wish they'd improve the animation since they're using more and more 3D modeling as a base.

Also, new art style sucks ass. But I guess it's better to have the good, old GG characters tailored to the modern Japanese tastes than completely new characters created from the ground with that intention.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really need to play Guilty Gear 2, now. It looks like this follows that game. But oh man. I need the OST just as much as I need the game. The vocals actually sound good, too, unlike the vocal GG albums.

Anyone want to make some Xrd avatars?

They probably kept the choppy animations for gameplay reasons. Smoother animation could mean adding more frames to moves which could affect the gameplay.

Maybe though, so take it with a grain of salt. I personally like the shitty animation. Part of guilty gear's charm in a way.

Since they're 3D models, maybe there is an (possibly hidden) option to unlock the in-between frames for all characters so they all have 60fps animations. And I bet it would look incredibly awkward and off-putting, but that would be a fun bonus curiosity.

Anybody wanna help me decipher these lyrics?

(It. Need. Tell well)?? come out of the way.
Freak. Cheat. Fraud. Lie. Suffering.
So let it be, oh let it be, says all the haters
Six times knocking on the door.
No response but hey, you're ready?

Give me a break it down!

If you look at the nicovideo I think it looks far smoother.

Not 3D animation smooth but I don't think it looks off-putting, but I didn't think that early guilty gear's animation was off-putting, as much as I acknowledge it being shitty. :P

It looks so convincingly 2D in motion that I had to do a double take even after the first camera pan. They really nailed the shading and animation this time.

But why does Sol's shoulder look like he's put lotion on it before the fight?

In my mind there's something fundamentally wrong about using Unreal Engine for fighting games...
Anyway, I guess I can't expect a handheld version of this.
