Its not even the character models though, just look at the background, it looks like the exact same quality found in BB backgrounds.

Other than the AA and higher resolution, there's nothing there that screams next gen to me. Nothing. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this turns out to be a cross gen title.

I'm not really sure what else in this style could make it look more next-gen.

Hyped, I hope Potemkin returns, although I am pretty sure he will.
Years later they will release a GG vs BB and I will have my ultimate big man duo team: Potemkin + Tager.

Alright, I enjoyed the music way too much. Anybody got some recommendations to others like it? Do past GG games have this type of music?

You could add more frames of animation and not slow it down. Marvel 3 has great smooth animation and the game is fast as hell.

I agree with this. They could have smoothed out the animation instead of trying to imitate the low budget animation from the other games.

I don't know why everyone's automatically assuming that this'll have less characters than +R.

Memories of the "new ASW game curse", where a roster usually starts out around 12-16.

But depending on how long they've been working on this, I think we might be actually surprised with how many characters are present at the jump.

Not to mention that I'm sure they want to avoid any similar SNKP/KOFXII-drama with "No (insert fave character here), No Buy".

Yeah, people are treating this like it's supposed to be a new IP or something from them.
They're not inventing a new wheel this time around, so I doubt it would be so limited.

And if they apply the same logic showed in the first trailer, once the tech is ready there is less research and developement to do, as the characters already exists. You still have to do a lot of testing to balance them, but the "type" and the capabilities of each one of them is already done.

Even if I am not found of BlazBlue, most of the characters have sick gameplay mechanics that must take a lot of time to be created before even starting to balance them.

As previously said in this thread, the background used was an homage to the first reveal of guilty gear, it very well could be place holder. This is the first thing we have seen from the game, assuming every little aspect is set in stone for final release probably 1-2 years from now is silly.

I will agree to disagree on the subject, but no cell shaded 2D game whether a fighter, RPG or otherwise looks this good at 1080p with high levels of AA and a nice frame rate because the PS3 is incapable of it. If you want to talk about games looking like previous gens, look at most niche JRPGs on the PS3, many of them look like PS2 RPGs with slightly fancier character models, or not much better than PS2 HD-makes. A generation is not defined by polygons alone. As long as the best looking cell shaded 3D of this gen looks as jaggy as it does, I will not believe this is possible on the PS3. Otherwise it means somehow the people at ASW have tons more talent than plenty of big named studios that have large budgets, and I kind of doubt that.

I'm hyped, Guilty Gear was a game I could never get into years ago due to the learning curve.

Also, it looks 2D watching it from my phone, looks so good.

What makes you assume this isn't as low budget as the other games?

And that's another thing altogether...

Celshading/Toonshading has a tendency to make a lot of games look "nicer" than they actually are. For example, I distinctly remember a lot of people being wowed by the likes of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom years ago when it first debuted...then they found out it was a Wii game. Then suddenly, they started noticing its numerous imperfections... :lol

I wouldn't be at all surprised if ASW put out this trailer that was in 1080p and AA, knowing full well that the final product (outside of a possible PC port) may likely not have either of that. "Bullshot trailers" are still a thing, aren't they?

Not to also mention that they're using 3D models this time around, which is a less time consuming than their typical sprite work.

I wouldn't be shocked if the roster was nearly all of XX's roster + around 2 new characters.

In an excess of hype after watching the trailer, I ran and bought GG+R for Vita ... then I remembered that I never really played a GG and don't know how to play. *sigh*

Still I'm pretty hype for this revision of GG. It looks awesome and hopefully as enjoyable as BB:CT when it came out. I'll also play something else than marvel on my vita now.

Wow i did the same thing!! Hype effect!! I havent played aa GG game for a long time now but GG+R looks really good on the Vita. I still prefer it more than that BB shit...

I am more into KOF but this trailer has really hyped me!!

I'm sad to admit, I've bought games from this series in the past, but only dabbled in single player, and they almost always languished in my backlog. I like the style and some of the characters, and the music much more than BlazBlue. This should get me to actually play them.

Is there anyone here who hasn't played Guilty Gear but it's interested in checking out the series after watching the trailer? I totally forgot I had a GGXX#Reload (the last PC release) key from GOG kicking around. If you meet this criteria, quote this post and write your number in the queue (1, 2, 3, 4, and so forth). Once the count reaches 20, I'll put the numbers in a random generator and will pick a winner. Good luck!

0.

Edit: Nevermind, I played it before.

And as much as I like GG's music, I think Arc Sys should look into putting some known metal bands on the soundtrack.

GG soundtracks have always been amazing. It doesn't need well-known bands. Especially because that would soak up a ridiculous amount of money for licensing that could otherwise be spent on developing, you know, the game.

Yeah, I remember there being a lot of arguments as to whether or not the game could be done on Wii. Some people were claiming (just as now), that it MUST be ps3/360 as it looked too nice on Wii. lol

Settle down. I was just throwing it out there as something they should look into, not something they should actually pursue. I'm sure I'll be more than OK with whatever they decide to do.

Besides, I'm not saying they should consider trying to get Metallica or anyone else extremely popular. Bands like the one I posted are much lesser-known and wouldn't cost nearly as much to license.

Have some avatars! Quote if you take one, etc.

Took this one. Thanks!

I wonder how many people can see the "Unrealness" of the game like most like to claim.

I can't. I think the game looks brilliant. I personally think that if they hadn't gone out their way to show it was 2.5d, many people would be none the wiser and there'd be a lot less bitching.

It would be pretty amazing if instead of revealing it in the first trailer, they tried to convince people it was hand drawn sprites for as long as they could...

Yep. Truly, "the more things change..."

Nah, I think they made the right choice with being as forward with the new direction they're going in, as possible. (My reservations about the trailer being a glorified bullshot not-withstanding).

Even the basic gameplay that they showed off was more or less a callback to various stages of XX's classic hallmarks done in this new style, right down to Dust Loops. But that likely was done just for the sake of demonstrating that "hey, we can do GGXX in this new style, so stop worrying about the fact that it's on UE!". I'd be very surprised if things like Sol's old Dust Loop made it into a more finalized version of Xrd.

The animation is inexcusably bad (not a fan of keeping it shitty for the sake of nostalgia or whatever) but otherwise I'm liking what I'm seeing/hearing. I'll def be keeping an eye on this.

Don't get the point of going 3D when both the art and animations are made to look like they're from the 2D games. Also probably going to be 30Hz.

I'm still buying this day one, but I can't get over how crap the animation is. I used to talk crap about it over a decade ago and I'm still going to talk crap about it now.

You can still keep the same timing while improving animations for all the moves. It's so janky to go from point a to point b with 1 still frame of animation that can be replaced with more animation frames and still have the same exact timing. Seriously whats the difference between 2 frames of animation lasting 1 second and 60 frames of animation spread out for 1 second?

Bah whatever. Game does pull off the nostalgic look. So as long as this hits Steam, it's a day one purchase for me.

I've been calling out Guilty Gear's crappy animation frames since it's inception. LOVE the game, but the animation level is HORRID. It's the same with BlazBlue. Awesome game and art, but the animation is poop. Hiding the fact that it was 3D would not have stopped my 15 years of bitching about the series' animation. I'm definitely hyped for the game and I love the artstyle, but that's not gonna hide those janky frames of animation.

Why do you think it will be 30 fps? The hardware running this game is clearly stronger than the PS3 and 360.

I'm pretty sure they are going to cater this game to the tournament players. It's going to be 60FPS... with 1 to 2 frames of animation sliding across the screen with effects lighting up all over the place to hide that fact.

That's cool. I personally don't think tons of animation is worth it in a game where you're gatling chaining from pretty much every single string. /shrug

Yes, the animation is bad, but I don't think it matters since it suits the combo system.

I talked about this earlier but kinda in a hurried way. For anyone who works on 3D animation, if you could shed some light into this because I'm probably going to be way off-base:

I'm guessing the characters -being 3D models- are animated on an indefinite number of frames, (let's say theoretically they could move at 120fps or higher on a beefy enough PC) but to make them look like 2D animations they purposefully skip all those frames. This means all the full 60fps animations are still coded into the game but just not visible. Let's say Arcsys could make uncapped animations a hidden/unlockable option for those who are not happy with the current games' look, would that be even possible?

Personally I love as it is. To me they look indistinguishable from sprites, except for the part where the camera rotates, obviously.

I'm confused, I though someone said the Nico version of the trailer was 60 fps? Is it not?

Does anyone know any hookups from a news site to get a video file and know for certain, or is every site just embedding the official YouTube upload?
