Gundam Reconguista in G |OT| Return of the 80s, All Hail the King

The daftness of everyone in this era is soooo reminiscent of Turn-A/The newtypes from ZZ!

I keep expecting Chara Soon to show up in a Gaza-C....Humanity has been drinking the newtype juice for too long everyone's heffed up on goofballs! G! G! G!

I enjoyed the first 2 eps. It surprised me the direction that they took visually, but I'm glad they did it. It really sends out those retro vibes. The step "backwards" in style really adds charm to the show.
Dunno how I feel about the characters as of yet, since there is a lot of explaining to do.
With episode 2 I can already feel the Tomino isms coming in on what the "message" for this series is. Previously, with the cruelty of War, Pollutions, and so on, this time we might get a take on Alternate fuel/energy.
I actually do enjoy the intro. Music wise at least, it's catchy, though would've been nice getting veteran anison's like MIQ to do the intro.
If this series doesn't through hints towards the Turn A future, I'll be highly disappointed.

Thank you OP for this, never even knew this existed. Just saw the first episode and I have to say it was pretty damn good. Looking forward to more and thank god Yoshiyuki Tomino is back.

Just finished the first episode, i'm really not seeing why so many people thought it was confusing? just 24 minutes of Tomino goodness

I'm not sure if people really think it's confusing, I don't myself, but it does have a lot of unexplained stuff which is pretty typical. I don't think it hurts the show at all, in fact it increases my curiosity, but if they don't ever explain stuff then... well that'd be bad.

I love the artstyle and general style to the show. It's so good looking.

Very interested in the future of the show. I enjoyed the first two episodes so I'm on board.

Ep 2

Tomino how do you come up with these names, i must know

I need more, so far this is pretty darn satisfying

Well, that was delightfully strange.

I remember getting the same slightly-alienating-but-charmed vibe from Turn A at first back in the day, so I will probably end up loving this.

It looks amazing and it's so very Tomino.

It feels good to be watching an anime that doesn't make me cringe for the first time in years.

Episode 2 has no right being any good, but it's good.

I think my favorite moment is the complete lack of transition in between
Bellri killing the Captain
and
Aida weeping about it after the act.
Second favorite is the one everyone noted -
the interrupted explanation cut in by a nonsensical combat scene
. The episode is a mess, editing wise. Which in animation is storyboarding for the most part. And Tomino is really bad at this.

But there's three things which keeps me interested - one is the great design work, from the characters to the machines. Character design in particular is good for building up that all-important first impression, and Yoshida did great work here. Second, there's this layer of absurdity to it that's probably not intentional - the incompetence, the weird framing, the general feel of its cinematography that's getting referred to as 80's as fuck - along with the goofy charm exuded by the characters. I wish they'd dance more; I hope there's a Kou Matsuo-style musical episode in the future. And last of all, the show is fumbling along at this grand arc, or at least that's how it seems to me, and maybe Tomino will pull it off and it'll end up being this incredibly incompetent, but compelling, mess of a beauty of a show. Kinda like Turn A!

I like to tell myself Tomino does these things intentionally.

I'm not much of a Gundam guy, trying to get into it. What's the best Gundam in that actually does philosophical stuff well? Unicorn just makes sense half the time.

None of them.

Watch Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket.

Read Crossbone Gundam. You don't need philosophical bullshit with Tobia Arronax around.

Votoms and Gasaraki have far more compelling ideas on both socio-political ideas and philosophical themes. That's because when it comes to writing about people and stories, Takahashi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Tomino. But being good at writing about people and stories don't make you money, so most people don't even know who he is these days. :(

Honestly, the only thing that's gotten me at a philosophical level is probably The Tatami Galaxy. That's because it didn't beat your head over it.

Flag was good, too.

I'm a huge mecha fan, but this is only my second Gundam. Previous was 00.

00 was really serious, so I expected something similar for G-Reco -- but instead the first two eps are fairly cheerful and really colorful! I ilke the color, but I expect the cheeriness to change.

Also, those opening and ending themes are really good.

Trust me on this, you do not want this with a Tomino series.

rrvv posted this interview with Tomino 4chan translated in the Gundam Community OT

-Capital Tower was built on the first year of RC. They started building the space side first. Mankind moved residence to near to the rail network to wait for the exhausted earth and nature to recover.
-The surviving spacenoids from the UC era, you might call them remnants, build their own place on the far side of the moon and oppose the capital tower.
-There's a colony of water/ocean near Venus. What mankind needs most, psychologically, when away from Earth, is the sea. 100 km diameter 150m wide disc. He envisioned a disc of water just floating in space and decided it'd be a great image. Now there can be submarines in space. Also there's a structure below it holding up the water where battle scenes can take place.

Some interesting world info in there.

you know, I want to believe that this will get good with the next episodes but it's hard.

Sure they can, just not when giant robots are involved.

If you want a real 3deep5u anime, watch Mononoke.
mononoke looks intriguing, I might start it. and since it's a spin-off of ayakashi samurai horror tales, should I also watch that?

I feel like the worst Gundam fan right now. I've only seen 8th MS Team, Wing, Endless Waltz, Gundam G, and maybe 2 episodes of SEED.

How far behind am I? :(

Is there a place I can buy NA versions of the shows so I can marathon them and catch up???

Wow Tomino hasn't changed at all huh. I wonder how much insight he has into how weird and awkward his shows are. Maybe I am just too feeble minded be able to comprehend his grand vision. That being said I am certainly enjoying this show a lot so far. I do not know why.

Yes you should and you should watch it first, but only the last 3 episodes. Ayakashi is a collection of completely 3 completely separate stories. The last of the stories (the bakeneko arc) are basically the real first 3 real episodes of Mononoke. If you skip the bakeneko arc then Mononoke is a fair bit more confusing then it needs to be.

The rest of ayakashi is fine, but the other 2 stories are basically 2 completely separate shows made totally different people so don't feel compelled to watch them.

You should watch more Universal Century series. You're shit out of luck when it comes to NA versions. The only Gundam related stuff released in NA in the last few years are the overpriced Gundam Unicorn Blu-ray discs. You could import region 4 DVD releases from Australia. Gundam 0079 (1979), Zeta Gundam (1985) are getting a DVD reissue later this month in Australia.

What about versions that at least have English menus and subs?

not exactly source but....

first 3 episode already got advance screening late august. So I guessing they simply lazy to add new OP.

either way clearly the OP is unfinished and will be replace later

It might not be unfinished. The advance screening didn't have any OP, so it has nothing to do with that. There's a lot of footage from ep1-4 used in the OP so far, but that might also be intentional. Tomino being Tomino. Who knows. One of the people working on the show said on Twitter that the final mecha scene in the OP was actually animated for another episode, but Tomino cut it out during editing, and he decided to use it for the OP instead. Lulz.
