Gundam Reconguista in G |OT| Return of the 80s, All Hail the King

One of the people working on the show said on Twitter that the final mecha scene in the OP was actually animated for another episode, but Tomino cut it out during editing, and he decided to use it for the OP instead. Lulz.

Finally got around to watching, and godamn! I came in with fairly low expectations, but so far the show is sooooo good, it's like the late 90s/early 00s all over again. The direction hurts my eyes though, far too much going on in some scenes.

I just want to say the way this show is edited and the dialogue is so horrendous. I thought people were exaggerating a lot, but jeez, it feels worse than the average anime every season. It was never THAT bad in the original and I would know becuase i ran through it not too long ago

Tomino is a wizard. We just don't understand his bald vision yet.

Personally, I feel like this is far from the average anime series.

I don't see why people think it is confusing so far.
The first two are definitely hectic, but then again I don't want long exposition explaining every goddamn thing in the plot in every episode like so many shows tend to do.

Maybe I am wrong, but the editing that people talk about on the staircase (the interruption) seems to be 100% intentional so I think people are being a little too critical at this point.
I don't really expect to understand the entire geo-political situation after 2 episodes, but I guess some people want that?

Then again it is Tomino, so who fucking knows what he is doing.

The show is bananas so far. I do feel like, after watching the first two eps, that I definitely need to rewatch them.

Also, god damn, they need a new OP. The song is great, but the visual pale in comparison to Gundam's best openings.

There needs to be a middle ground between that and Tomino not explaining why anything is happening though. It isn't that bad to not explain everything right away, but I still like to have some idea of what's going on halfway through a series, which hasn't been the case with Tomino series that I've watched before.

haha, you say that as if it being intentional makes it even better. If anything that makes it worse....

I agree there but I also think calling a show out for not explaining things after only 2 episodes is laughable.

Maybe I also have a high tolerance for Tomino's style or something. I still have not gotten around to watching Gainer but I never had a problem with following the plot in Turn A, which is the most recent work I have seen of his.

What? Zeta movies? Stop blabbing out your weird fever dreams, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Let's be honest here, by any technical standard Tomino is not a particularly good writer or director. His style has appeal because of how haphazard and strange it can be, creating a unique feeling. But whether that is entirely by design or just a consequence of his lack of actual ability, we'll probably never know. Ultimately, it doesn't matter as much because he's so crazy he comes up with settings and premises where the content actually fits the tone of the nonsensical direction.

Oh yeah, I agree. I guess I just find it weird that people would complain about it in a Tomino thread.
I came in desperately hoping I was gonna get batshit insane situations and stories just like Turn A and I think we on a good track for that! :)

I also think that he always does a great job immersing you in a world or geo-political atmosphere without going overboard on the exposition. So I am not worried about the lack of exposition on boring shit I can probably guess anyway.

I actually got a grin on my face at the staircase edit. I am probably waaaaaaay out there with this, but I saw it as a jab at all the long exposition scenes which just explain the exact same geopolitical situations over and over which are so common to anime. Hell, there are even Gundam series with boring long exposition like that which lifted straight from the original setting.

I just got around to watching the first two episodes

*commercial break*

and I'm wondering why it seems like they were chopped together by a small child. It's not a bad show, but the editing is bizarre. They go to the dock in 2 with the express purpose of him moving the Gundam and when they get there, the guy says "Move the Gundam" and he goes "EHHHHH!?" like he had no idea, moments before a cut and him going "Okay!" with a smile on his face. Just....awful... aaaahhhhh

I hope it gets better.

This sounds bad. But I'm sure in a few years ppl will suddenly say how great it is and treat it as a golden gift from Tomino just like Turn A.

I saw that as just him being surprised he actually was allowed to move it

Just saw the first two episode and had no idea what was happening. People keep saying this is Tomino's style but I don't remember being this confused in the original gundam or Zeta.

I don't understand this sentiment at all. The plot is very basic IMO. I could probably summarize the 2 episodes in 5 lines each:

Episode 1:
Mysterious girl is captured while falling from a Gundam of unknown origin.
MC is some sort of generic soldier, captures Gundam when it attacks the space elevator.
Gundam contained yet another mysterious girl.
MC discovers he can pilot the Gundam.
Random girl characters show us gender roles are well and alive centuries into the future.

Episode 2:
Everyone is back on Earth, the pilot girl is captured and the random girls are taking care of the mysterious girl.
Some sort of religious/political meeting is taking place, mysterious terrorist faction appears to retrieve Gundam and pilot.
MC goes to look for pilot girl, retrieves her.
They go to where the Gundam is being stored to defend it.
MC defends Gundam from terrorists.

That's about it. What's there not to get? The show is bad. I cringed at some of the cuts, dialogue and the 80's-worthy gender sensibilities, but I can't see how it is in any way or form confusing.

This.

I tend not to over think anime and just take it for what it is. Tomino is clearly not showing you everything or telling you everything initially, but I found the first two episodes of G-Reco to be really straightforward.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I tend to stay away from Anime-gaf threads for the most part. I usually come in and say my peace and leave.

I don't understand the point of jumping to conclusions based on what is a tiny portion of the overall project.

It's like reading the first 3/4 of Game of Thrones and complaining that
Edward Stark keeps doing blatantly stupid shit but none of it is coming back to bite him in the ass!

Also, I have a pet peeve where seeing people lay the faults of an entire project at the feet of one person bothers me to no end.
Even when it is the person in charge, some people tend to believe that means they have full control. Which is almost never the case in any entertainment industry.

I mean, the original Gundam feels rushed in parts....but that is probably because the last 1/4 of the script was cut and it was forced to end early!
But I am sure there is someone out there watching it for the first time and going "Fucking Tomino needs to learn how to edit." lol

I agree with the spirit of what you're saying. Judging the worth of a whole project based on a couple episodes is silly. What I will say, though, is that taking a critical eye to what has been shown so far is something that's an interesting, and often times fairly constructive, thing to do.

For instance the "Tomino can't edit" complaint thing you're seeing here isn't a judgement of the the whole series, but more that the editing in these episodes, for better or worse, has been in a style very similar to in his previous works. Simple things like strange cuts between mobile suit action to characters talking back to mobile suit action with no real transition happen quite a bit in Tomino's work, including G-Reco, and can cause pacing of episodes and scenes to feel very odd, erratic, and occasionally almost stilted.

So I guess what I'm saying is making a value on G-Reco as a whole based on what's been shown so far is, of course, super silly. That doesn't mean people can't be critical of what has been shown and take a critical eye to those episodes. Writing off people's critical observations of the episodes as they've been shown is silly as well.

I can't say I was expecting this thread to be 9 pages long.

I can't say I expected us to be at 9 pages after only 2 episodes have aired. Will be really interesting to see how (or I guess I should say if) this inevitably slows down over the course of the season.

Reading the entire thread, it's pretty clear which people have watched Tomino's mastperiece, Garzey's Wing, and who haven't. For the unitiatied, Garzey's Wing is a 3-part OVA written, directed, and edited by Tomino. It's entirely his creation and it you need proof that Toimo is a bad writer, director and editor look no further. All the complaints people make about his comptency are true and they have been for decades. Tomino really hasn't changed, grown or improved as an artist in decades.

The first episode of G-Reco is enitrely in keeping with this. That bad pacing, editing, writing, composition - that's all classic Tomino.

A good portion is people not knowing what's going on for some reason -_-
Well what I mean at least is I feel like there is zero exposition so I have no idea the state of the world or who the different sides are so I don't really have a reason to care about anything yet. By the end of the first episodes of MSG I know who the federation and Zeon were and the stakes at play, right now I know nothing. There has to be a middle ground between loads of exposition (that would damage the pacing) and no exposition at all.

Shocking how an opening narration will do that

Finally got around to watch it. It feels like the first time I've watched Turn A for some reason.
Can't say I like it, but I'll stick around.

I'm amazed at how 90's the series feels. And all those grain filters...damn.

I couldn't even make it past the first 15 minutes of the first episode of Garzey's Wing.

And I am/was so much of a Tomino fan I even tracked down and watched some of those horrendous Dunbine OVAs.

I kept seeing this thread in the OT, and I finally decided to click on it thinking "Another Gundam show? Really?" and I scrolled down and saw this character design and said "Okay, I'll check this out."

Episode 2
Realized I hadn't actually posted impressions of episode 2 so all I really have to say is I know Tomino said he wanted to give this series a environmental message but could he at least be more subtle than constantly cutting to shots of wildlife being disturbed by the fighting?
Episode 3
See what I just said about the heavy handed environmental message? well it's even worse in this episode but makes for some funny slapstick. Also Krim Nick looks like he's going to be hilarious, a self decided genius. I actual feel like the series is improving and can become something god but is just being held back by some odd editing and the occasional bad writing, which I felt was much better this episode. Also next week looks like it'll feature G-Arcane! Hype!

Toilet seats for the cockpit, but no Japanese bidet.

Tomino plz.
