Gundam Reconguista in G |OT| Return of the 80s, All Hail the King

Easily the worst opening episode of any gundam I've watched.... I hope Ep 2 is a massive improvement.... at least we got build fighters.

Oh man, the last few episodes should totally build up to "Operation Moonlight", only for the finale to be the main characters abandoning the mission and eloping instead. And the final scene will be something like "what happened to the mission?" "oh we didn't feel like it!" and then the bride throws the bouquet. ~fin~

If this not the ending I'm going to cry

I've just seen the first episode, but I enjoyed it. World was interesting, and someone got slapped already. Mechanical designs were better in show than I thought before, and I like most of the character art.

A gif of the eyecatch would be hilarious.

There will never be a MG of this ;_;

Episode 2

The editing in this show is awful. So many random jumps and weird scenes going on.

"Because the Earth .................................... is why!" WTF was that?

That said I love the majority of the designs, especially the Grimoire. And I'm wondering what the over/under on people getting slapped is going to be in this series.

G! G! G! G! G! G!

lmao, that was hilarious. Cut to a 3 second fight scene solely to avoid revealing the whole sentence.

I know Tomino openings are a little wonky, so I hold out hope for an improvement down the line. It helps that I like the characters and designs

There's a difference between 'doesn't explain everything' and 'explains practically nothing'.

And I don't think asking for the amount of context that the show assumes you but doesn't give counts as a 'mystery'. No, I don't think that the answer to what the Capital is (or who the hell the Pope is, or literally anything about the state of the world) so that we may have some degree of context to know why we should give a fuck about whatever they're doing, is going to be some sort of major revelation that needs to be shrouded for the best effect. It's a baseline from which we can attach meaning to the Capital Letter Words that the show throws in your face, and it's a baseline that the show actively does not. It is something that clearly everyone in the show knows, but the audience doesn't because Tomino, in a best case scenario, just wants to fuck with people.

I can accept when a show doesn't explain itself when it uses other forms of language to communicate ideas, or it's inherently more surreal or abstract in nature. There are occasions where I can accept and feel that the show has told me all I need to know. G Reco has not done this, because it's neither subtle enough to say what it needs to say without direct exposition, intelligent enough to frame things in a way that keeps the audience from asking questions, or abstract enough to excuse narrative inconsistency. It runs ahead, leaves you to figure out how to catch up, and leaves oil slicks in its' wake as you try to.

But they give you enough baseline to understand what's going on. Why does the exact meaning what the Capital is matter at this point? You can infer they're aligned with "Earth" and that they're a military body (from the comment that only the military uses mobile suits). In fact, they might be the name of the Earth government.

We know from the pirates that they don't want to place solar cells over the Earth, which is part of the reason for pirate attacks, so maybe they have some sort of monopoly on energy or hold over planetary matters.

As for the Pope, does it matter "who" he is this early? The fact that they used Pope as opposed to some made up word for his position, already clues you into him being a religious figure of some significance. We also know there appears to be some sort of royalty, whether it's an autocracy or something like the UK where it's just a carry over, it's there.

I really don't understand the need to fully know who all these people are so early on. You got enough glimpse of the world that you can make some inferences and ask questions. The things you want are nice to know, but aside from superficial fleshing out of the story, they won't have any meaning until there's some story significance.

Knowing the Pope and his role, for instance, won't matter until he does something that justifies or emphasizes or utilizes his role, so why do you need to know about it at the moment?

I'd probably be a lot more critical about this if the artstyle and animation didn't totally win me over in one minute flat

Definitely a typical start to the series but not as much background given. The dialogue is lacking in some places and I was confused at why they said certain things, but overall not bad. Not a big fan on how low tier mobile suit designs went to crap when they could've just made cooler looking zakus

And Lord Tomino has returned in his glory to save anime, complete with awesome Tomino Names.

Big grin on my face watching these episodes.

Not sure where any of it is going, but I'm going to trust in the madness.

I watched half of it, but then my daughter woke up so I went to get her. Came back and it wouldn't work anymore. Reloaded the page and it's now gone.
:( :( :( :(
Dammit Sunrise, just put them on youtube like GBF!

Aaaaaaah the smells of vintage Tomino. This gonna be crazy as fuck and I am ready for it.*

*As long as its better than AGE.
It could be 50 episodes of a still frame of a mayonnaise bottle turd and it'll be better than AGE.

Is everyone European and/or in Japan now?

Goddamn region lock.
Seriously :(

For what it's worth, I consider Gundam SEED season 1 as the best Gundam series,
followed by Gundams Unicorn and Wing.

The older ones just bored me to tears. Their soundtracks were also unremarkable.
There aren't enough Bright Slaps in the universe for this.

Well that was certainly the strangest opening series for a Gundam show I've seen.

Just a few things I noticed...

Cheerleaders... IN SPACE!

That Haro... thing... do not want!

Mobile Suit designs range from very odd (Recton's [no idea on the spelling] have a TV face o_O) to pretty good. The 'G' is meh so far, not enough explained yet.

The opening is pretty terrible but it sets up the first two episodes well... by that I mean that an opening can be a great artistic way to introduce the viewer into what transpires in the show... This opening is all over the place, just like the show.

The ending is pretty good, oddly happy and positive with people joined up and dancing together.

I thought it was extremely strange how both the girl with Amnesia and the G pilot were acting/being treated, they are basically enemies and yet the girl with amnesia is running around and barely being followed by some soldiers, and the G pilot was taken to a prison... then they release her from that prison during a battle and almost let her take back the G from them which makes absolutely no sense... Is this military being ran by idiots?

I liked the throwback to the UC mobile suits

For some reason the MC's group has a pope of some kind.

I liked the MC he seemed much more light hearted then the typical brooding protagonist these series are known for.

Overall yeah both episodes were all over the place, I think a simple introduction to give the viewer a clue on whats actually going on in this world would have been extremely helpful.

that was just ... ugh.

tomino sexism is back in full force I see, lol.

people already complained about a lot of stuff and I pretty much agree with it. some scenes were just "wut?". when he runs into a wall? That cut when he tries to explain what's happening? Why did they go to save her in the first place. of course nothing is explained and we have no character development so far.
the fights were really bad. storyboarding much? In the second episode, the only actual battle lasted 10 seconds and made no sense. he kept fighting with the cockpit opened, the guy was attacking him even AFTER seeing the "princess" on the thing. after he kills the guy she cries, "why did you kill him bleeh". the ORAORAORA sequence was cool though.
some lines, "why are you a pirate??" "the earth isn't square". ?? what am I missing here. again, "why are you a fucking pirate?" - seems like the only think he wants to know - and she says something about solar panels and the capital being dictatorial. ?? seriously the writing was just awful.

whatever

the show looks pretty at least, and I like the chara design. also OP and ED are nice.

lmao, seriously, all of this. The dialogue so far is especially nonsensical, even by Tomino's standards.

That title change. I approve.

So, looking at the art there for the Char clone, I guess that pretty much confirms he's that silver hair guy Bell was hanging around with. Not surprising since they looked so much alike. Will be interesting to see a MC and a Char with a pre existing relationship.

I always felt like Tomino's Gundam stories always have this big epic outline planned but always have problem getting MCs into where he want them to be rationally.

I totally thought Z Gundam intro was bs.
"Hmm that kid's name sounds like a girl"
"GAHH, I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU"
/proceeded to punch officer, hijacked gundam, became rebel.

So these episodes are pretty much in line in term of nonsensical.

The best part is that Jerrid calling Kamille a girl set two to three wars in motion, minimum.

Haven't gotten to catch this yet, but can anyone tell me which previous Gundam series does it tonally resemble so far (apart from Turn A obviously)?

Ep 1

this OP. this setting of jungle goodness. time to hop in on this 1080p goodness!

gatdamn.
UC CANON CONFIRMED

the slap ... was weak.

0/10 bright noas!

Ep 2

what a clusterfuck.

Just finished both episodes. That was kind of strange. I know Tomino's not the strongest writer there is, but a lot of the dialogue seems particularly nonsensical.

Oh and Ameria references = Turn-A prequel confirmed.

I feel like the dialogue is like that in a lot of his shows.

I've only watched the first episode but man it was 80's as fuck. I loved it.

The dialogue was definitely strange. Felt like i was watching someone animate a radio drama but declining to re record the voices.

The mobile suit designs are bananas. Love the Grimoire, need an HG like yesterday.

The colony/space elevator setup is really weird.

This anime. This! This is closer to Turn A than I dare hoped. Even G-Self did Turn A's pose. I'm so going to love this.

Ending song was really catchy, too.

Will buy plastic toys of said robots.

I think it's more like all his non-Gundam anime (mainly the comedy ones). It might invoke Overman King Gainer more just because of the character designs.
