Guy pitching New Star Trek series, takes place after Voyager, not greenlit yet

Star Trek hasn’t been on television since 2005. After Enterprise it just seemed like the whole thing needed a rest. But with JJ Abrams taking his sweet time about getting another movie off the ground, maybe a fresh TV show is the right way to go.

There have been rumblings that a new Trek TV series might be in the works for awhile now. For instance, at one point a new Trek animated series was being worked on. Now here’s a new addition to the list of Star Trek TV series possibilities: A live-action project, code-named “S.E.T.I.”, being developed by David Foster.

He spoke about his plans to TrekWeb. Apparently this is a project he’s been working on since 2006 and while Foster’s tight-lipped about the nature of the project he does have this to say:

The series concept is fully developed, subject to change of course, with a solid 5-7 year series plan, pilot script and a conceptualized finale that intends to define Star Trek for generations, extensive character bios, costume and ship/set designs, and more. This is a drastic departure from the typical 8-10 page treatment of the previously pitched Star Trek series ideas that have not included even a pilot script.

In the wake of JJ Abrams’ 2009 movie a lot has changed in the Star Trek universe. That film was specifically designed to change the timeline established by all other Star Trek’s which came before. However, it sounds like this new idea will ignore the latest movie and stick with established canon. Foster explains:

The vision that we have created is true to the “pre-2009 screen canon” (TV and movies). We were also careful with the Star Trek: Enterprise canon as well. Through the years, I have had the chance to get to know many of the original series cast, crew, and even some of the studio execs. I have developed an extremely deep passion for the original vision of Gene Roddenberry. And while Star Trek has moved on with other series that were not exactly in line with Gene’s original vision, the roots are there to tap into.

The show would pick up in a time period after the one covered in Star Trek: Voyager. We’re talking Next Generation era technology here. Don’t expect to see a lot of cast from other previous Trek incarnations though. They’re going younger. Here’s how they explain what it will be about:

The series is highly energized with a much younger cast, and uses cutting-edge future technologies with newly envisioned special effects and designs. It includes Klingons, Ferengi, Andorians, Vulcans, Trill, and many more. The Klingons are getting very restless since the Praxis incident forced them to come to the peace tables, and are tired of having to rely on the Federation for support. The Ferengi have discovered a vast new resource that has propelled them towards instant riches and power beyond anything they have previously experienced.

The really exciting thing here is that this seems to be more than just some random pipe-dream. Foster says they’ve talked to CBS about it and while they haven’t officially pitched it to them through his 1974 Entertainment production company, the feedback from CBS has been very positive. This may actually go somewhere. Stick around, we’ll keep you apprised.

Read the actual interview. It's not CBS developing the series. It's some guy with a fanfict (basically) who is going to try to pitch it to CBS and it'll be shot down.

Oh God this really needs to happen soon. It's been way too long since we've had any sort of space-themed science fiction on primetime network TV.

You know, with Star Trek being on Netflix, there are tons and tons of new fans out there. Coupled with the movie that was the most successful thing the franchise has ever had, now is the time to do it.

But, I doubt we will get one for a while.

I think its a mistake to go back to what was proven successful with the movie.... A trek tv series should be based in the same "new" universe imo.

The only way I would be happy with them going back for the series was something based in the ds9 era.... that series was ignored completely and is still the best trek imo.

How does this fit in with the Star Trek MMO? Apparently it's kind of canon...
I'm sure Trek has some sort of canon ranking system like Star Wars, where content from "higher level" material like TV and movies can override games.

Man, I really hope this goes somewhere.

It won't as long as Brad Grey is running Paramount.

He shot down any idea of a new Trek series after Enterprise ended because he feels that it works better as a film franchise.

The game is higher canon than this. It's official CBS/Paramount canon dealing with the Trek universe post-Romulous.

This is done by the people who do those horribly non-canon movies like Of Gods and Men where Captain Chekov can save the day.

I will only be interested in a TV series set in the Prime universe if it still adopts the half-hard scifi sensibilities of JJ Abrams' film.

i've always wanted to watch the original star trek and the picard star trek. are they both on netflix?

Let's bring Data back to life please? In fact, let's just make sure none of the Star Trek movies are canon (including the latest one).

About time. Star Trek has been stable on TV for decades and sucks its 2011 and a new one is not on TV.

B4 pretty much becomes Data when all of his memories fully integrate, and becomes captain of the Enterprise E before the "supernova" destroys Romulus.

YES!

This series needs to remember one thing again to become great. It's not about politics, its not about fight scenes and epic enemies...the best episodes are derived from the mystery of the unknown. Explore, meet and experience alien cultures and above all confront the unknown and try to survive it.

Too much Politics in DS9, too much fighting in enterprise, too little excitement over the unknown by Voyager in favor of running and struggling amongst crew, and too much attacking aliens or fucking aliens by Kirk. Picard was a thinker and thats what we need again. Gimmie another ST TnG and I will be ready day one.

I support a new show if they actually have a pre-planned story arc, start to finish, before they start filming.

Shows that know where they're going from the start are always so much better than shows that make it up as they go along.

This talk of going "younger" worries me. I don't want to see 20 somethings running the ship, a good starship captian should be someone with age and experience. (yeah I know, blah blah Kirk, but I feel Picard was the better captain)

There's only really one level of canon, and that's what happens on-screen/confirmed by word of god.

Everything else is not canon, including the MMORPG, it just claimed it was.

It didn't just claim it was. CBS/Paramount has no desire for a new TV series, so they're allowing the MMO to take that place to continue the post-Voyager Trek universe. The new ship designs Cryptic has created for the game are officially recognized as canon, as are the events in the universe.

This new "series" is nothing more than fan fiction that CBS/Paramount will round-file.

I made it almost a whole 2 minutes in until the wahjah overwhelmed me.

I suffered through the entire thing, and the only thing that keeps you going is the hope of seeing more of Chase Masterson painted green.

In that case, I would like a plot summary from the game... It seems odd that the only thing I've read plot-wise from the game is the timeline to 2407 (ie. Star Trek MMO setting).

It's all detailed in the timeline. Just click on a year for the log entry.

It's set right after Spock and Nero go back in time and after Romulous is destroyed. So this is how the universe continues after that event. If you read the "Countdown" prequel to the JJ Abrams movie, the uniform Captain Data was wearing in that is what they based the main STO uniform on.

Whoops I meant 2409 :) At any rate, I mean the plot of Star Trek after that time line (ie. during the game).

I've read Countdown, but I want moaaarrrr.

This thread will alternate between people who only read the OP and those who pay attention to the rest of the thread.

This reads not like how a star trek would actually be pitched but how a fan's wet dream of a pitch would go... oh wait.

EDIT: That trailer is making me laugh so hard right now.

Let it stay dead, IMO they shouldn't make a new series.

Fixed. They should make a new SciFi show, unrelated to Star Trek. I'm itching for some post-cyberpunk, but a new Space Opera would be a nice consolation prize at least.

Yes please. More real Trek Universe and less Ultimate Trek movie-verse. Star Trek got people excited about space, it's proven. Action space flicks, I'm not sure how much Star Wars got people into space travel. Buddism and maybe Objectivism.

I'd love for a new TV Star Trek series. The movie was great and I liked all the TV series. But Paramount and CBS have been iffy about another TV series, so I won't keep my hopes up.

Woah, woah, woah....there's nothing even semi hard science about Abrahms turd. Abrahms shitty movie was the worst, most vile, shallow thing ever to happen to Trek. Even worse then the 11 years of excrement we got with Berman & Braga & Behr. It was nothing more than Star Wars with some minor Star Trek trappings wrapped around it so they can claim it's not just to keep from getting sued for plagiarism. I mean, It's written by the two biggest Hacks in the industry right now, Orci & Kurtzman. These 2 are the same no talents that wrote all 3 Bayformers movies. The fact that those 2 keep getting work just proves that the idiots have taken over hollywood.

Sorry to get so ranty but it just saddens me to see what was once one of the best, most idealistic shows about one mans positive outlook on the future fall so far as it has.

I'd love something new with the political/cultural focus of DS9.
I'm with you. I also would like it to be bit darker then your usual ST sagas but since it's Star Trek I guess not. On the other hand I would much rather have something else then star trek. I can only hope the new BSG series is good.

I thought any new TV series was 100% off the table until the movie sequels were out the door (which could be quite some time).

We are going to get more TV Trek again at some point many years from now. Hopefully it's willing to go all-in like DS9 on being (for the most part) a tightly wound drama series and not space alien/crewmember with daddy problems of the week filler 2/3 of the time.

They are. This is just fan fiction.

The next TV series we're going to get is an animated one set in the Abramsverse. It's already under consideration.

I think the fact that the films they work on are among the top cash generators in the box office is the main driver more than anything.

Also, they weren't involved with Trans3. ;P

That's why it's the best one.

That just proves my point. Quality now is determined by how much money you make and not by intelligence.

edit: Star Trek V has a more coherent plot than anything those 2 morons have come up with.
