I've already ran into people, IRL and online, that hate TPAB because it's either too preachy or the production sounds 'dated.' It's crazy how myopic people can be with the music they consume.

that being said, yelling "we want the funk" is about the least progressive thing you could say on a record in 2015

Kendrick avoids the preachy label to me by fully revealing his contradictions, flaws, and vulnerability. One of the biggest problems with Lupe is that his work is so non-personal. He sounds like some angel looking down on earth shaking his head. And he also sounds bitter, like he resents the fact that so many people dismiss him. He represents every high school backpacker, angry over the mainstream. I was that dude in HS so I recognize it. Listening to Mos & Kweli, shaking my head at 50 Cent stans as if they personally did me dirty.

Lupe seems to be moving in a better direction now though so I hope that continues.

I loved Kanye for not being afraid to reveal his flaws. And perhaps I do him a disservice by laughing at him now, when to be honest he's still revealing his flaws and admitting his wrongs, just in a more public fashion.

I just can't take Kendrick on the mic. Everything about his voice and delivery is so grating to me. Which is odd since I like rappers with much more "out there" voices (like a Danny Brown).

Well Kendrick has like ten different voices on that album so you have to be more specific

Hey do you guys remember when you said Watch the Throne was all powered by Kanye creatively?

myyqQEs.png

As they were wrapping up Watch The Throne, Jay says, “Are we finished? Is this it? Okay, cool, I want to play you a record that’s gonna be on my album.” He plays “Holy Grail,” and of course a shitstorm happens. Kanye’s not an idiot.

Kanye says “This track is crazy, it needs to be on Watch The Throne.”

And Jay says, “No, that’s a single from my album.” And that’s how I got the phone call asking me to try to do a record close to that one.

I get to New York, and we’re at the Mercer Hotel, working. We had the whole floor. I get in, Frank Ocean’s sitting there, and they’re just starting on “No Church in The Wild.”

So “Holy Grail” itself inspired them to change Watch the Throne. Because of that record, six other records got made at that point, including “Otis.”

i use a lot of watch the throne

i guess because i don't listen to a whole lot of hip hop and it's pretty accessible, lots of big poppy hooks, etc.?

and now for the backtracks.

in advance: don't care about what you thought about WTT, but to deny it was huge in the culture and did big things is folly, and lots of 'supergroup' albums and records before have flopped hard in every possible way.

I just think it's funny, because Kanye stans have been saying for years now that Hov's relevance and creative output is all Kanye powered, but when the truth comes out

Otis is possibly the most annoying beat of all time though.
That was one of the few tracks I liked on there :lol that, No Church and The Joy. Though I can't remember if The Joy was just a bonus track.

Yeah, it's just like fun over the top shit from what I can remember. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just not a Jay-Z fan.

can you imagine how deflating it must be to be jay z and know that kanye stole your sound and then did it better than you

No Church In The Wild, Niggas In Paris, Gotta Have It, Murder To Excellence are the only good songs tbh. The rest are meh or trash. That's My Bitch one of the worst songs I've heard Kanye on.

That'd be assuming he cares about his music at this point. And that's false.

Can't backtrack on something you never stanned for in the first place. Good album, wasn't as great as many made it out to be. Lots of supergroup albums have done great too, just not so much in rap. NiP took over the year, no doubt.

i actually catch feels in murder to excellence at the switching point in the middle and idek why

i'm partial to who all of those + who gon stop me (mostly the backing track in the second half) + why i love you

like i said, the tracks with the big hooks

So MCHG birthed Yeezus - ie Kanye taking his ball and going home because Hov was working with Timbo - and SHMG. And WTT.

One minute you're on top of the world creatively. Next minute you're getting BET awards from a Harlem vagrant and requiring 18 writers to make a single song.

0 to 100 real quick

WTT is pretty damn mediocre, and you don't like one of it's better songs...Gotta Have It. MCHG is so garbage that thank god Ye tried to salvage any good beats from it.

I'm still laughing at Kanye demanding that Hov put his songs on the album. He really did learn how to move creatively from the gawd MC himself. Trying to do Hov like Hov did Freeway, forcing him to come up off 1-900-Hustler for The Dynasty

Gotta Have It is garbage, that goofy ass dubsteppy beat. Thought you had more refined taste. Peak Neptunes fruitiness.

lol jay stans.

brehs, if ye took Holy Grail the song would have been 100000x doper, with crazy samples and chops and- you know, a verse from a competent rapper.

Watch The Throne was straight fire, dunno what you guys are talking about; considering how most collaborations between other high-profile rappers turn out, WTT did pretty good.

Would love a sequel

Exactly. Kanye is all about cherrypicking the good parts and throwing out the trash. Like he would want a cheesy JT hook on that shit, foh. He'd probably elevate it rather than settle for another generic pop song.

this is ye stan delusion world though, where WTT wasn't the hottest record of 2011. Probably the hottest and most talked about record since... What? Carter 3? And that was with Jay feeding Kanye relevance and inspiration off the massive BP3 and his future album, MCHG. Very nice of Jay to continue keeping Kanye alive and give him relevance. Lord know he can't go out in public at a proper without having a fit about the man's wife.

Yea we should establish that Holy Grail is a bad song. But we should also establish that if Ye had taken Holy Grail he would have replaced JT with Mr Hudson, layered 3-7 unnecessary instruments underneath the sample, sung off key alongside Mr Hudson, and added a church choir.

Without even hearing Ye's version I'll say that I prefer Hov's #minimalist version.

all Kanye verses have been trash in the past 2 year

Nobody calls this out because technically Kanye has never had a high bar. People expect Jay-Z to consistently be the greatest rapper in the world, even at a tender age of 45 because at one point, he was capable of this, at the drop of a hat, wherever whenever. Kanye meanwhile has always been chugging along as a lessor emcee, unremarkable freestyle ability, meh flow.

It's like when your B-/C+ student turns in a few C/C- papers. are you really going to single him out?
