Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

1 point from rank up.

Let's guess how many games it'll take until I rank up now.

Rank 14

Realistically I think I can hit 18 before I tire out, but that's so close to 21 I might as well shoot for top.

They need to an emote for:

"Wow you're playing the most popular net deck. Just like the 5 people I played right before you."

I think it's much easier to netdeck and know how to play the deck in gwent vs hearthstone. Since you draw most of your deck in gwent and face most of your opponents deck, you can watch a few videos and know what order to play the cards in. In hearthstone, you have much fewer cards at a time and so does your opponent so you need to know your deck much better to figure out the optimal play and while there still may be a set order to play your cards, you need to have a bunch of contingencies when you don't get the right cards or your opponent has a great counter.

The game hasn't even been patched yet, and through OB we've seen:

Monsters: Dagon Fog
Nilfgaard: Calveit Spies
ST: Spell Control, Dwarves
NR: Henselt Reavers
Skellige: Queensguard (early), Morkvarg

The meta changes. If people are netdecking... build counters and win. That's what meta means.

It's hard to counter NG spies since their draw power is so good. I can completely blow them up if I get the right draws but that's super unlikely. That being said its very, very doable. Old consume monsters was much worse.

Just crafted Igni foil

Delicioooous

Imo I have the three "best looking" golds now

Vilgefortz, G:igni and RNR

Everything is beatable. I hate nilfgaard, but I have won against them the last few matches.

There isn't one ultimate deck. Just have a good strategy for the cards you currently have

Pretty good day. Finally hit Rank 17 and beat both Swim and TrueDawn, although to be fair they were both playing the Skellige Axemen deck that isn't very good.

Stammelford's is a bit overtuned for a bronze card.

It's also weird how some silver mages can summon better spells than Keira lol. Either make her a silver or give keira silver spells instead of bronze.

Got a choice of:
Cahir, Cerys, and Saskia.

I'm leaning toward Saskia? I don't really play ST, or the others for that matter (mostly NR so far), but she seems more useful than the one I already have and Cerys seems not great.

I just fired up the demo on the PS4 and good lord this text looks small? It's almost borderline unplayable from my couch. Is it just my tv?

Yep, Saskia. Cerys only really works with queensguards at the moment, and those are getting dunked next patch.

Sasskia is a staple in any ST deck and is great even with dorfs. Turns out big guaranteed 1st turn combos with Roach and Brouver.

I wish they'd give full scraps for Cerys as well. Pretty hard to get at use out of her without QG and with them getting worse its an indirect Cerys nerf.

I do too, I was toying with an idea I had with her a few days back pairing her with Johnny.

Basically if I had both in hand I would play Johnny and discard Cerys for basically a free gold from the opponents deck.

It was very RNG dependent, I could pull it off about 50% of the time, and sometimes it would flat out win me the game easily. Other times it just wasn't adding value and on rare occasions you might get nothing if your opponent has all 4 of his golds in his hand since it only creates a copy from the deck.

Johnny was still useful pairing even with QG though. But that Johnny + Cerys combo was so damn strong at times.

I learned the joys of Ciri+Sarah (though Ciri+Johnny could be good just more RNG heavy) today.

I thought about that too but with Ciri Dash with Johnny. Except the only faction that could reliably pull off getting Ciri again is Nilf.

With Cerys, you could just use Johnny to discard her and not worry about any repercussions for the most part. Most of the time it worked out in my favor.

I'm kind of surprised at how much I feel this game is easier to play than something like HS, outside of the obvious face decks in that game. Less reliance on RNG due to smaller decks and 3 cards per deck instead of 30 card decks and 2 cards per. More cards in your starting hand give you more answers. Minion interaction with enemy minions is minimal too.

It's a different game and there's quite a bit of strategy, and I much prefer the less RNG in this game, but yeah, it's harder to play around stuff and you have to think your moves more in advance in HS because you have less options and resources available to you.

The current meta is all about going all in round 1 so having ciri and Sarah in hand round one has been great, I drop her turn 1 and then just play it out normal, if they throw the round then great, if not, I'll end up with card advantage at the end and they still had to commit a bunch of resources. Bonus points because I was actually running renew so if I won, I'd just drop Renew to get her out and going again.

Also, after a bit of a of slump last couple days, I've been doing really well with my Dagon Fog/Freeze deck. Helps to realize that foglets appear on the row you put fog on, not chosen randomly.

Awesome. I've been on the brink of Rank 17 multiple times but it's tough to break through. Top 100 is really punishing when you lose.

Yea I was higher before, around 800 on leaderboard, lost once and was 1050 leaderboard straight after. Seems way harder than closed beta.

I've only been playing people ranked like 150 or so below for two days straight now, kind of sucks. I'm hovering right at the top 1000 mark too so there should be able at my MMR to play.

So can we talk about how Celaeno Harpies are essentially 13 strength bronze minions?

The strongest bronze minions in the game where even if you play the best silver lock card in the game (Auckes) you still end up with less value? You just spent a silver to lock up the eggs and end up -1 on the trade.

:/

I thought tremors was the strongest bronze in the game. 16 points of value!!!!!!!!

Also, not sure where you get -1 after using Auckes from. I agree that using Auckes on the eggs is usually a shitty use of him but not sure where -1 comes from. You are laying 6 points on the field and beating the harpy by 3 in the bubble of those two cards vs each other.

I encountered them for the first time the other day and the guy using them absolutely destroyed me.

Because Celaeno is a 5 str minion and Auckes is 4 str.

So after using Auckes you end up -1 on the value for using a silver on a straight 1 to 1 card trade. I'm more or less complaining about the lack of counters to harpies other than spell control.

Tremors is extremely strong but requires a strong board presence to use against. I do think it's slightly over tuned.

I fumbled on my math, was thinking celeno was 3 str too for some reason. That said locks are worth about 4 points by the way they tune cards. Auckes toggling two locks is crazy and using it in eggs to stop 3 str units is a waste most of the time.

Harpy is a very efficient unit, yes but you can't just add the points together. You have to treat it like soft resilience, because that's its main function.

As far as resilience goes, Harpy misses out on the biggest benefit of it, the multiplicative effect it has on buff cards. Buffing a Mahakam defender effectively doubles the efficacy of the buffs. Harpy has no such behavior, although it tries to make up for that with the Consume bonus, Consume is pretty poor right now.

I guess it could go down to 4.

I disagree, even after switching to Calveit. The majority of decks I run against in rank 10 are mainly a consume variation of monsters.

I'm actually surprised in how few Calveit decks I've run into since that was mainly what I went up against when I played Queensguard.

There's a reason those decks are rank 10 still.

So if I'm reading this right, you can spend 800 scraps and 400 dust for 1600 scraps, and repeat that indefinitely. If you buy the 7200 dust from the store for £50, you can craft 18 premium legendaries, giving you 18 standard legendaries of your choice once all done.

So all those times people said the meteorite rewards from ranked were stupid will now have to eat crow.

£50 for 18 guaranteed legendaries of your choice is crazy value. I'll definitely be jumping on that, does seem a bit too good to be true though.

Damn they're actually doing that. That's crazy, I really thought they would offer powder to prevent people effectively buying all the legendaries.

edit: perhaps they prevent newly created cards after the patch from providing a full scraps refund.

Can you have dupe premium legandaries? If so you can make them all before the patch and mill them after. That's slightly riskier since they might change stuff.

Edit: I'm an idiot, that wouldn't work if you don't have the scraps already

Someone has to test it before I'm willing to go that route. If this works, I'll pay up!

Yeah, if it works, I'll probably buy some dust too. This is actually exactly what I wanted, i.e., be able to buy the cards I want. Just the way of going about it is different.

Knowing ahead of time does you no good anyway but I think reddit was keeping a rumor list of changes, someone linked to it a few pages back.

Some of that stuff was wrong/ or already changed though.
