Gwent - Open Beta Thread: Not bad, not bad at all

You don't need to remove every weather though. And it's actually really weak to do so.

I got by for a long time with a single silver weather removal. But later I added a bronze lane clear after I switched from emhyr to calveit because calveit is more vulnerable.

But even with 1-2 weather removals I have a high winrate against monsters which seems like the main faction that spams weathers.

.

I dont remove every weather effect. I wait for 2 usually, and even then, I tend to play around it or boost certain cards. The issue is that I sometimes dont draw the weather cards, and sometimes I face decks that have a pure assault of weather effects and cards that move around my units.

With the RNR and Drought nerfs, I can more easily play around weather because I can better ride them out, or use weather clears on basic weather instead of having to endure something like frost, which can be just as powerful as drought if combo'd corrctly

Pretty minor patch, mostly just some minor number changes. Only card that really got fucked is skellige hunter I feel. Rarely saw RNR/Drought anyway since they're bad cards already, now they're just fully trash.

At least some bug fixes and bonus stuff if you bought kegs so that's nice!

Hunter would have been fine I think if it wasn't boosting the base value of the card. It was the revive value that made them insane.

nice patch. I can still rek you all ( ͠° ͜ʖ ͡°)ง

Honestly I think this is the right way. Make small adjustments (mostly number changes) on a bunch of cards and see where the problems really lie.

Looking forward to Machine NR, crafting John Natalis is the first thing I'll do when the patch drops.

Every step I take
Every move I make
Every single day
Every time I play
I'll be missing you
Thinking of the day
When you went away
What a card to take

RIP Hunters

Yea they were OP, and they got nerfed accordingly. Maybe could have kept the veteran tag though. Regressing was enough to nerf them.

Top tier value for the NG opponent. (What did they do to Hunter though?)

Also, just screwed over two Tibor players. Passing with one card left in the last round can be so satisfying.

Is savage bear the one that does 1 damage? What did they do to it?

It was a pretty good NG counter, especially with the Novice being 1 power now

It doesn't "counter" those anymore. The damage is dealt after Deploy instead of before.

I remain skeptical of the QG nerf. While they can obviously get good value with Cerys and other graveyard shenanigans, I always felt there was decent counterplay with consume effects and medics. And bears to attempt to safeguard your graveyard, which is after all a central SK mechanic. Now its gates are wide open. QG Seems like a way too small swing at 3x3 power instead of 3x5, with no way to protect them.

This has nothing to do with me funneling all my scrap at a QG deck, of course.

I think I'll try to play with some axemen now. Gotta use all those crafted skellige silvers for something!

For the next few days until the patch hits, when given the choice of cards in kegs, always pick the one that got nerfed. Then once the patch hits you can mill that card and get enough scrap to craft any card of the same rarity.

When do we get the patch refund scraps?

After the patch hits, you have 5 days to mill any cards that were nerfed and get the amount of scraps it would take to craft the card. You will only get scraps for milling the cards though.

Bears are also bugged. If there is a Bear and another 3 strength unit and you play Roche, kill the bear, spawn a Blue Stripes Commando, kill the other 3 strength unit, spawn the second Commando, for some reason the Bear will damage the second command (but not the first). I believe Shieldmaidens had a similar interaction.

And overall, I don't see how NR is really benefiting from this patch. Reaver Hunters are probably the best NR deck at the moment, but still pretty low tier and got no help this patch. Obviously machine decks got buffed, I don't think any of which are that significant. And the Armor archetype was bad before, and will remain bad afterwards.

My biggest peeve with the game right now is the UI. The combat log is really bad for explaining what happened. And things whiz across the screen so fast you don't even know your opponent played a card sometimes. One time my opponent played a second vilgefortz and I had no idea how he got the card. Other times my opponent plays a spell that has no board impact and I barely noticed he did anything at all til it says my turn. If you resurrect cards from the GY, it should be easy to look up in the UI.

There are also a lot of little things about text and keywords which could be clarified better. Hopefully they nail some of these in the next update.

The UI in general is pretty bad. Hover over a card and look how far you can go before it switches to the card next to it, it's kind of insane. The combat log is terrible. The huge black screens when anyone is selecting a card. It looks and feels like a UI for consoles, they should do a PC specific one and let you change in the options.

My thoughts exactly - it's gives me the impression they've never developed on PC before. But I know that isn't true because of the witcher series.

lol this is getting ridiculous.

Not going to lie, it's pretty cool seeing yourself on the leaderboard among popular streamers and pros.

They really don't like Skellige huh :(

I'm divided about the Savage Bear change. On the one hand, I understand why they did it: it feels really bad to have a card that says "These cards (Priestess of Freya, Vicovaru Medics, etc) in are your hand are now useless and can not be played" On the other hand it felt like a strong tech card that could be played around. If anything I would have changed Savage Bear health to 3 or less since each faction should have ways to deal damage 3 on a bronze unit.

I am hoping that the nerf to the other factions is enough for NR to rise up to decently competitive. I don't think the new machine buffs are going to be enough to get that deck up and running at a good level, but I'll probably play it once or twice for fun anyhow to see.

I do think there is a lot of good stuff for NR in this patch, but it mostly comes from the competition getting weaker rather than their cards getting better. John Natalis might be playable now though! That's a positive!

That's too bad. Id like a silver card that counters those cards then.

FINALLY got to 1100 Ranked points, putting me at rank 11 I think. Was struggling so long.

They need to rework the Leader that has to be used round 1.

Give him options like the Mages have

Yeah Foltest getting +1 Strength to be 5 instead of 4 really doesn't matter when you are going to be playing him first turn everytime anyhow. It's already super easy for the popular NR decks to dominate that first turn against most things (except heavy weather or spell decks). You can thin your deck to an insane level in most cases in that first round.

The NR leader Henselt that pulls guys from the deck is more interesting, but has lot of problems of his own, too. There just is a lot of weird anti-synergy within their own cards. NR seems to love buffing up their own cards, but then also shuffling them back in to the deck which resets them and negates all the buffing? Very strange mechanics to have together.

So how often do these fucks do de d/c glitch in ranked in order for you to not gain any points? I wish they would get banned so fiercely, they wouldn't be allowed to even look at another card game.

Only had time for a rushed first daily. Last game I thought already won if I'd pass so his bork wouldn't trigger. But I'm dumb and it triggered anyway and we tied. If I played my last card (tremmors) I would have won lol. Tied and still lost 17 mmr. So dumb you lose mmr on ties.

You don't necessarily, it just means you had more ranking points than your opponent.

is there a list of changes anywhere?
Asked earlier as well, apparently not.

I think that's only true if you were the higher MMR player. That does make sense to me; in a sense MMR is a measure of how expected you are to win, so if you didn't, you get a light readjustment downwards.

Sometimes I get 50p from rank, sometimes 25. Cuz of his mmr?

I know. But I didn't lose so it feels dumb I get punished for it. Luckily this was my first draw this season. Was dumb in closed beta and still is. I misplayed here but I feel a draw should just be no change for either side.

The matchmaking is pretty bad. I hit rank 10 finally but my last match only rewarded me 29 points. In fact, both last matches were against players over 100 points below me.

1471 vs 1322

1438 vs 1322 (yes 1322 twice in a row weird)

Also, I did not sit in the queue long. I've been watching that.

edit:
Also I noticed rank rewards suck for how much effort you put into ranked.

If a lower-rated player draws against a higher-rated player expected to win by a wide margin, it means the lower player should be rated higher and the higher player should be rated lower. Draws don't mean push unless each side is rated the same.

My only gripe with the MMR system rather than Elo (with decay) is that you basically have to play every day for a while just to keep pace with your rank.

Edit: misspelled
