Swedish pride! Our 17-year old Emma Larsson did a good job on her floor routine! So happy she's at the Olympics! She's cool :D

Is NBC showing taped women's gymnastics @ 7pm EST? Subscribed to Vue to watch but I'm not seeing it listed on the guide. Feel confused

Eythora Thorsdottir had a great floor routine! Sad about the fall, but the routine was great. She takes dance class seriously!

Love the positive vibe going on in the Japanese team among the gymnasts and coaches. Having fun, being positive!

Article on Samir:

Q: Samir, how are you feeling a day after your injury?

Samir: “I am very well. The surgery went well. I saw the scans and it’s true that the injury is not very nice to see. Everyone was a bit surprised by my reaction. I didn’t scream, I just knew instantly that it was over. I need to accept it. So immediately, I thought about the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Not to keep hope, but because I am determined. I want this Olympic medal and I will get it. So I was in a hurry to have surgery. Today I was able to walk again.”

Q: The images of your fall went around the world within a few minutes. Were you surprised by the wave of emotions that they evoked?

Samir: “When leaving the arena I already saw everyone standing up. That’s the value of the Olympic spirit. We are not a country but an identity: we are Olympians. When I waved to the public to thank them, everyone applauded. Even amidst my misfortune, it was an extraordinary moment. The proof is that I didn’t even cry. This was a human experience. Even the Vault judges supported me. They were saddened and I wish to thank them for their kind words. On social media, many people wished me a speedy recovery and above all that they said that they want to see me come back stronger at the Tokyo Games.”

Q: Are you usually able to master the Tsukahara double pike vault? How do you explain what happened?

Samir: “I performed this vault well the day before in the training hall. I had planned to do it. On competition day, I was a bit off center, but I don’t really know why.”

Q: At the 2012 European Championships in Montpellier, you had an accident on Vault that destroyed your London Olympic dreams. Do you still believe another Olympic adventure is possible?

Samir: “One thing is for sure: I will fight and work hard to go to the Tokyo Games and to bring home a medal. And if I succeed after a big injury like this, it will be even more magical. I’m not done with Gymnastics at 25 years old. Look at gymnasts like Epke Zonderland, who is over 30 and still winning medals. I will go and watch the other competitors on Still Rings here in Rio and support them. Arthur Zanetti and Eleftherios Petrounias are my friends too. Today I’m not there anymore, but in four years I will be!”

Good to see that he's gonna be fine and has a really positive attitude despite everything.

The fact that the USA Women might sweep the Gymnastics golds is ridiculous to me, and even more ridiculous is that Biles will likely win five of them.

having a limit by country is total bs

the third highest scorer not moving on just because the two highest scorers are from her country is total nonsense

Why didn't Raismann jump again in the vault? She had the second best score and could have easily made the finals to compete for a medal.

Training a second vault can be a lot of work. You can't do the same vault twice to make finals, they have to be from what's called "different families", which is the way they hit the table.

Simone herself took several years to finally debut the second vault she's doing now. (she has been doing an easier second vault for the past 3 years)

So I guess Aly was just trying to maximize her training time on her best events. (beam and floor)

Can anyone tell me how much time from now for the start of men's gymnastics? Italian info about this is woefully inadequate, I thought it should have started ten minutes ago (and maybe it did). If I understand correctly it's two hours from now, but I'm not sure.

The Olympic schedule says 3PM. Which is about 1 hour and 42 minutes from now.

It is and it isn't, it does suck for the countries and athletes that don't get to compete. On the other hand it's about international competition and the spirit of competing. There are plenty of sports dominated by one group. They have to give the other countries a chance to gain experience and get better. The olympics is not suppose to be the national competition of any one nation. Can you imagine if they let us (Canadians) send as many hockey teams as we wanted. We would send 4 teams and it could end up the quarter finals would be all Canadian, plus other nations would lose players. Who wants to watch that. That is just one example and I am sure almost every country would have one event they dominate. I think of Norway in the cross country skiing events they would be like the top ten with maybe one other person, it would be a waste of time.

Can someone help me understand how women's gymnastics work? There are 5 girls on Team USA, but only 3 can compete to be chosen for the team all around(max 2). Why are there 5 girls? Also
why was Gabby chosen over Laurie to be a possible all around? Gabby has not impressed me AT ALL this year but Laurie just slays.
And then you can be selected to be in the individual event finals, right? Is that also a max of 2 per country?

1. There are 5 girls to allow for a couple event specialists like Madison Kocian in addition to the all around competitors. They use to allow 7 but cut back.

2. Gabby was likely chosen due to her experience winning the all around as well as coming in 2nd in the world last year in the all around.

3. Yes the individual events also have a limit of two. Hence why Lauren didn't qualify on the floor.

Laurie has a ton of charisma, but she is somewhat more sloppy in her technique.

They can gain experience in the prelims, nobody is saying they shouldn't be there at all. It's absurd that only 3 gymnasts scored above a 60 in the all around and one of them can't compete for a medal. The bronze medal has just become a farce.

The Jamaicans could have swept the 100 meter final in London and nobody said it wasn't fair. In fact it made the event even more exciting! People just wanted to see the best. But somehow if the Americans have a chance to sweep something then it's not right.

If it were really about the spirit of competing, the third highest scorer wouldn't be sitting on the sidelines.

Your example doesn't make any sense. Maybe it wasn't clear, but I'm talking about the qualifying spots for the people that are already there competing in the event, not who actually gets chosen to go to the olympics.

Limiting the amount of people per country that can go and compete is fine and makes sense for what the olympics are supposed to be, but having people that are competing and score high enough to qualify told to sit down and spectate because of a country limit is disrespectful to the spirit of competition. They should be taking the top however many scorers and advancing them to the next round regardless of country.

No it's not. What is total bs though is people only caring about this rule because USA women can't sweep the spots. If it was China, for instance, no one would be complaining about shit.

I care about the rule because it makes the competition look like a joke. I don't normally follow anything about gymnastics or the olympics and certainly don't have any horses in the race, so I wouldn't care if it were China on all three spots at the podium, if all three were the top scorers.

The bronze medal has just become a farce.

Like I tried to explain it has nothing to do with the Americans. It's not like this rule is just to screw the US from sweeping. They will adjust the rules just like the always do. I want to see more countries sending full teams, having only one Romanian in gymnastics is a far bigger deal. Hopefully one day we will have a 16 country team final. I would also like to see every girl compete every event, so everyone gets a shot at the all around.

15 minutes!!!!!!!!!

I need GB, Japan and Russia on the podium! I wouldn't mind if China and the US had a meltdown.
