Games: Halo 2 Retail Date Broken in Midwest

Thanks to c0nrad, who alerted us to a Gamespot article stating that Halo 2's launch date has been broken by a Midwestern store. From the article: "Several reports on the Gaming Age forums--which included photos of the limited edition of the game--said that several individual Meijer stores, a self-described grocery and general merchandise retailer that operates in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Kentucky, were selling the game early. However, calls made by GameSpot to several Meijer outlets made it sound like the franchise was sticking to the deadline." The reader continues: "Despite that, Ebay auctions have already gone up, with one having already reached $265!"

DALLAS - Advance copies of the aliens-versus-space marines video game "Halo 2" have already fetched as much as $265 on Internet auction site eBay, days before the official launch.
The $50 Xbox (news - web sites) game, Microsoft Corp.'s flagship title, doesn't officially go on sale until Tuesday.
But in one eBay auction, an in-hand copy of the $55 special edition "Halo 2", which includes special packaging and a bonus DVD, sold Thursday for $265.
In a statement, Microsoft would only say it has been "working really hard to keep the 'Halo 2' plot twists a secret so everyone can have an equal opportunity to enjoy them. That will happen when the game officially goes on sale at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9."
In the game, players once again assume the role of super soldier Master Chief as he and fellow combatants try to thwart an alien invasion of earth.
Reports that copies had been sold at a few stores owned by Midwest retail chain Meijer Inc. were denied by company spokesman John Zimmerman. "There is absolutely no truth to that at all," he said.
Last month, a pirated, French-language version of "Halo 2" appeared on file-sharing networks and news groups. Microsoft said it continues to investigate that case and is working with authorities to track down those responsible. It's unclear how the breach occurred.
The problems apparently haven't affected sales: more than 1.5 million copies of the game have been pre-ordered.

dskillzhtown said:I went up to EB today to pay off my Halo 2 and they were getting ready for the Midnight Mandess crap. They got all these balloons and those neck thingies for launch. They also were wearing new X-Box Live Polos which looked HOT. They kept pushing me to pre-order another copy, like I needed 2. A Halo tournament will take place as well, had about 12 people signed up for it. This is going to be interesting because of course the employees will have to run the event, and one one is actually friendly. Anyway, they said they are expecting to stay open until 5 AM! I was like, "WTF!?!? 5 AM!??!" I can't see that happening at all actually. I mean, I would think they will be open until 3 at the longest. I mean, within 3 hours, all the pre-ordered copies should be given out. The manager said one store in Houston has 900 pre-orders. That is nuts. They said they were going to get some security for crowd control and theft control as well. They had Halo playing on the X-Box kiosk. They actually have a female working up there now. She is the assistant manager. Looks like an Asian mix. Maybe Japanese and Hispanic, I would hit it with the force of the Flood regardless.
I'll try to take pics of the launch (and the assistant manager) for the GAF News Network.
