Halo 4: Review Thread

I understand the sentiment in some of the reviews of it being more of the same. I love the series but after 5 games I'm feeling fatigued and have played each consecutive game since 2 less and less. I was hoping Halo 4 would test the waters with switching up the sandbox and putting us in a scenario away from the human and covenant factions we're used to. But other than a few interesting new enemies and not-so-interesting weapons, it sounds largely the same. For the first time in the series I might start this one out with a rental.

Great scores! I've loved every single Halo game so the only way I wasn't gonna get this is if it got much worse scores than the rest of the series.

I doubt it will be Goatie for me with games like XCOM, Dishonored, FTL, Walking Dead, Sleeping Dogs, etc. out this year, but I'm hoping it ends up high on my list.

I was afraid that rifles were gonna be too big a part of this game and so on higher difficulties I'd just be taking people out with the BR/DMR like in Reach and parts of Halo 3, but I've heard the game has a "close quarters" and "kinetic" feel to it, which sounds exactly like CE's combat to me, with its focus on close-mid range weapons, forcing you to constantly move around to get a better angle.

Also one thing I accept with reviews: they're not really for the hardcore Halo fans. They're not gonna seek out all the tiny niggles in multiplayer and single player (demonstrated with Reach), it's a general guideline for the average customer.

Yeah, same with Giant Bomb, Eurogamer and The Escapist. Only sites that give the game glowing appraise and a perfect score have any sort of integrity.
Like IGN. They weren't trying to get hits, they were just trying to provide a valuable and informative service for their readers.

Supersonic is a joker...don't take his post seriously :)

The negatives don't bother me much. I didn't want them to change the formula and short and sweet campaign is better than filler.

A couple areas are those classic symmetrical Halo levels where you have to activate two or three of the same kind of switches, the repetition of which felt like filler to me. At least I prefer it over the excessive backtracking from some of the previous Halos.

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on the negatives. Giant Bomb and Eurogamer both thought the campaign was safe, but this return to form was Edge's main positive. Looks like we're getting a good Halo game, but maybe not something revolutionary.

I am not surprised by this, it is 343's first title in the trilogy not only is there no need to fix what isn't broken but playing it safe shows they are capable of the experience players come to expect with Halo.

I wouldn't expect any radical changes to Halo's single player structure.

The multiplayer criticism was fair, but at the same I feel that is very difficult thing to review. You never know how it is going to be adopted and balanced down the line, if ever.

Does that matter? It launches bad, you should review it poorly. It launches and people buy it as though it is a finished product, that's how it should be reviewed.

Poe's Law. Arrrgh.

So I read a few pages back that most of the reviews didn't like the Multiplayer and most said it got old fast, if this is true then it went from straight buy to maybe buy after Christmas.

I think the reviews gave me a good sense of what to expect. The thing that concerns me is the possible lack of bigger open battles that I loved in previous games, other than that it sounds good.

IGN said:
Halo 4 feels much more open-ended and organic than Halo Reach’s paint-by-numbers sequences because of its massive scale, scope, and freedom for possibility.

This better be true but it contradicts EDGE.

The review didn't say it was poor but highlighted aspects that could be annoying in the long run.

Most people are buying Halo 4 during launch week, and most are buying it for multiplayer, and most are buying it so they can play it for the long run. So they're incredibly pertinent aspects to review.

More than any other publication, I was looking to Edge's review. So far it's the only one I read, since I knew it would be spoiler free (it was). It's a low water mark for the series from them, but given how skeptical they were of the multiplayer side of things in their previews, I'm glad the strength of the Campaign carried it that high.

Yeah I was waiting for them specifically as well and came away from their review really excited about the campaign still.

And it doesn't need anything but good writing to back up the already-solid gameplay, Bungie failed the writing part after Halo 2 badly.

I agree, while I do feel Bungie tried and was more ambitious with the story in both 3 and Reach they were out of their depth.

I am excited to see how the story elements shake out in 343's trilogy, it is sounding like a solid effort.

It's saying you can select CoD controls now and iron sights are accessible with the left trigger. The Dog Tags look like something brand new. Maybe you can collect them in multi.

wtf? I thought the game didn't have iron sights. :/

Some quotes from some reviews about the lack of scale when compared to Halo 3 and a supposedly less aggressive AI have me somewhat concerned, hopefully the more advanced graphics engine didn't hold back the game in terms of scale and enemy count...still really interested to see 343's take on the series though plus there's always Spartan Ops and MP that look awesome.

This is one of the few titles that I am not even reading a review; I like what I have seen from 343 and feel confident in a day one purchase.

This better be true but it contradicts EDGE.

I feel like IGN was speaking more about sandbox freedom and edge was talking more about epicness of battles...

For instance Reach had some pretty epic battles that were not quite as open as some of Halo 3s battles.

Or a better example, CoD can portray a huge battle and be much more linear than a smaller battle in Halo, yet Halo gives you much more freedom.

All hail the king!

Congrats, 343i. We can only go up with Halo 5-6.

Yes, I did not say it wasn't. Take for example Reach's MP launch: poor, changes midway: decent, new mappacks and finally: playlist streamlined, but DLC problems, still decent and more evolved then the launch. MP games always change, because I play for the long haul I keep that in mind too, but it could also go horribly wrong.
How much more is there when it comes to Halo 4 multiplayer?

Oh, tons. I wish I could talk more about it now. I think we’ve only shown off about half the complete War Games experience. What excites me even more is that right now we’re preparing even more for post launch, so we’re going to have lots of returning favorites come back post launch. There’s also even more new content coming. I think that you’re going to be very pleasantly surprised. I wish I could talk more about it, but there’s tons more coming.

That just means you can map zoom to the left trigger. It's not iron sights.

The default controls have already moved closer to CoD, with sprint on L3 and crouch on B.

I think if you put up a poll asking what people were looking forward too most, the SP campaign or MP you might be surprised.

Send out more Mountain Dew and Doritos?

Or call Pizza Hut and put them on the case.

I'm on it!

The one thing I find funny is how reviewers flaunt "just like halo!" Or "it's more halo" like its a potential negative

I'm relieved, though. For a few days I was thinking I was going to get a forza game.

I understand what you are trying to say but I still don't know what to think about Halo 4.

I want big epic open battles with sandbox freedom.

Indeed, IIRC the numbers are very, very heavily skewed on the SP campaign's favor. A large majority have never touched multiplayer, either because don't want or because they can't.

This better be true but it contradicts EDGE.

not entirely. 'grand staged battles' could mean battles which are staged well, rather than large scale. either way, both are praising the single player campaign. i'd welcome less scripting and more claustrophobic environments with open arms if that is indeed what we are looking at.

I'd say GOTY awards will be spread out. ME3 will probaby get the bulk but like most games that get released early in the year they tend to almost slightly forgotton about or put aside.

Other than that, it's Halo, Dishonoured and XCOM I guess?

Borderlands 2. Boy it has been a weak year.

Wow at the IGN video review. Guy whos playing it and doing the voice over sure loves his Halo. Can't wait till Monday night.

This. There is a reason almost all of Halo ad campaigns are based on the single player campaign, and why the extended universe is so huge.

opinions!
I'll take these type of reviews over ones where they write a review from the perspective of the imaginary ideal customer or something silly!

Thanks for clarifying, so it looks like the EG reviewer confused zoom with iron sights? lol.

Kid Icarus: Uprising; and Paper Mario could come in at the tail end.
FTL could be a sneaky winner as people have a think. Borderlands 2 also should do nicely.
Dishonoured I don't see doing that well tbh.

So yeah I think its going to be incredibly spread out; more a personal GOTY than anything else.

The Neogaf GOTY awards will be really interesting too I guess. :P

False dichotomy.

No one is asking for reviews to be boring to read. Not wanting hyperbolic fluff pieces does not entail that no interesting uses of textual language are allowed.

What are you writing an phd thesis in here? So much hyperbolic fluff in your textual post!
