This is art.

Hype is not someone one "keeps in check."

I think you are misunderstanding me. I'm referring to the fact that "hype" or successful PR manipulation can distort, alter, and/or influence people's mindset in regards to the marketed object. "Keeping it in check" refers to the act of highlighting or uncovering this unwarranted, yet PR-influenced, statements. This is not exclusive to Halo 4, but to almost all contemporary AAA games.

You don't agree with the above?

Yeah, if you leave out all the posts defending Halo's level design, naming the scarab encounter as among the finest in any FPS, etc. I think it may be you that has a problem, polyh3dron.

You said you played on Legendary. Have you solo'd the game in Heroic? How difficult is it compared to the previous games?

Haven't tried heroic yet or solo for that matter but Legendary wasn't that hard. We didn't have any skulls turned on, though.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

It's true. I'm watching Giant Bomb's 24 Halo marathon and SOOO many of the levels from 1 and 2 are just long, boring, tight corridors with no variety or anything interesting going on.

For a futuristic sci-fi game, the interior locations have terrible art/architecture. Bland wall texture x 1000000000 and just weird angled objects randomly plopped everywhere.

Sounds like it's another great entry in the series. But isn't that the problem?

I've played all the Halos except for ODST and the formula has just worn really thin for me. Aren't you guys tired of doing the same old things game after game after game?
Nope there aren't many shooters with an open design, good AI and proper co-op.

I saw the multiplayer stream yesterday. It looks like it'll get boring after a few minutes because the core gameplay mechanics is still the same.

Wake me up when there is a new Respawn, Bungie or Valve game out that changes the FPS genre and does new things instead of rehashing the same formula over and over again.

It's not true that's just your opinion. Also i don't need a refresher on how the games played based on a video you watched. I still replay both games regularly, i remember their campaigns.

Make sure to check out this page of the journalism thread for all of the proper scoring icons!

Ok this just slayed me.

And still you're going to buy it. So it works :)

What do you suggest ? How far can you change the FPS genre without it being pointless or gimmicky? The gameplay of Halo has remained popular because a hell of a lot of people find it fun, don't change what isn't broken I guess (in terms of this franchise at least).

Seriously. Who isn't tired of the whole "being in first person and shooting at the other players" cliche in FPS games? Get some creativity, developers!

Would you be happy if it was more like Call of Duty?

It's nice to see this getting high scores including 10s, although i haven't heard of many of the places that give it a 10. I still don't really know what the story will be about, i should read the books.

Halo 1 changed FPS genre with many innovations.

I expected Halo 4 to be the same BECAUSE
1) it's a huge franchise
2) is made by a new developer

Apparently, I am far too disappointed.

What does COD have to do anything with Halo other than the fact that Halo copies COD's multiplayer aspects such as load-outs, run-button, etc... In a way, COD is leading the fps genre sadly if that's what you want to hear.

My point is, I'd rather see them leading the FPS genre than COPYING other games' mechanics I aforementioned.
I am not here to argue which is better. I am here to share my disappointments with the others.

Lol... there always is one in every Halo thread.

Ok, what would you suggest that 343 change without incurring the wrath of a huge existing fan base.

343 don't need to innovate Halo for the sake of it, leave that to a new IP.

It's the go to thing to hate on when talking about FPS ;)

I agree with you, by the way. FPS MP needs a shake up. I loved what Infinity Ward did with COD4/MW2 and I appreciate what Bungie did with Halo (even though I've never invested that much time into the MP side for various reasons).

This looks like it will be a really great MP game, but you're right that it's time for someone to shake things up again. I think next gen will be the time it happens, unfortunately.

Can you give an example of the changes you would have liked to see? I don't see how you can drastically change something that already has a blueprint. The original Halo was innovative because it was the first of its kind. How many shooters drastically innovate their sequels? Maybe from Call of Duty to Call of Duty 4 but after that it's been pretty much the same thing.

So before you were upset they are going with the same Halo formula, and now you don't like them copying other aspects. What is it?

He'd probably be making millions in the VG industry if he had the right ideas!

It's fair enough to want innovation without knowing what it is. I have no idea what I want it to be, but I know that someone needs to innovate to keep me interested in MP FPS.

For you illiterates.

Try and wow me. I pay developers to do that for me.
You probably won't see the add-on to my post so here it is.

Give this man a tag. Brilliance.

I would've liked

bigger levels
bigger multiplayer
no cutscenes
better level design
better art direction
the suit powers from Crysis for the new Spartan armor

I will never understand people going into clearly marked threads for games they're not interested in then throwing in their pithy commentary "Hmm, more Halo huh? I've passed on the others so I'll continue to pass on this, seems like they changed nothing"

That being said: THE INTERNET

Why would anyone think that a new developer starting a new trilogy might shake up the franchise in a way that might appeal more to them?

Shocking!

This is surely the right thread for them, more so than the OT. The whole point of reviews is to tell you what's the same/different.
