Halo 5 beta clips leak (sprint, ADS is *not* COD-style) (more clips and info added)

Man all those pages of people trying to say the ADS means forced movement penalties...

Well it does in every other game so there was a reason to believe to would be so here. Everyone overreacted in hindsight of course but they were going off what we all know.

This one is probably more accurate for this particular thread:

Can anyone recap what has happened? All I remember is halo is dad from this morning. What changed?

People thought the game had sprinting and ADS like COD thanks to a single 3 or 4 sec clip, and a bunch of people cried about it and escalated it. More videos show up and an tweet back up that actually, it's not like COD at all, and it's basically the BR scope - at least that is my understanding from the first few pages and the midsection

Why is 343 pushing Locke so hard? Is he going to
replace MC?

Despite what Frankie says, it's pretty obvious, yeah. That and the fact they're about to release a game called 'The Master Chief Collection'.

there is nothing dated about Halo 2 except for its graphics. It's mechanics are timeless.

You don't fuck with chess because monopoly came out. nah now you buy squares and have to maintain an economy.

You do when Chess 2 comes out and you need to compete.

shit as in bad? Do you like documentaries?

It's a documentary about how fucked about christianity in the States is, it's supposed to be disturbing

On Topic : It must be insane working for 343 when 20 second clips of a beta receive this reaction.

Aye. That Halo 2 documentary kind of reminded me of this thread. I remember some (in realize most of gaf didn't feel like this) kind of downplaying the effort put into the MCC. I imagined some 343 employees reading that and just gnawing at the bit to show how wrong those statements were.

I don't get Halo fans freaking out about Halo evolving as a game. This is exactly why the series has been on a decline in popularity, because Bungie just played things super conservative and safe. To the point that a series once loved for how creative it was, and how much it evolved the FPS genre, became synonymous with stagnancy. This is likely the same reason Halo games come out and basically just have the same redundant fire-arms every time. Even the formerly creative alien weapons just turned into clones of the same boring Battle rifle and assault rifle in Halo2.

Adding run in Halo reach was a breath of fresh air for the series in my opinion. Most guns in Halo already had zoom/aiming down sights, and people loved the Pistol because of the zoom/aim. How doesn't it make sense to add zoom/ aim for pretty much every weapon? As long as hip aiming is still viable, this sounds exactly in-line with what Halo was becoming anyways.

Going back and playing Halo 3, the game is just brutally slow. Still fun, but almost like walking through molasses. If there's anything I wanted in Halo since CE, it was for it to continually progress, and be evolutionary. If Halo 5 is just the same old, I don't see how that is a win.

I'm not sure changing the formula is adding to the formula, the best thing 343 could do now is strip away all the new stuff and produce a Halo more along the lines of the original trilogy. I know it sounds safe and stale but it's what the franchise needs. Halo 3 was hardly anything new over Halo 2 but everyone seemed content with that. Mario didn't become a physics based platformer just because Sonic had success in that area. Sometimes you just gotta stick to your roots and Halo's a slow paced arena based multiplayer game. That being said the current build of Halo 5 is sounding like it could be worse.

Guess hardcore Halo MO fans don't want change to classic gameplay model - which ADS and sprint would clearly bring as they do affect play style and arguably weapon balance.

Not horrified myself but if they're making notable changes it could get very interesting if they don't hit home. Last thing MS needs is a Halo on Xbox One that tails off as quickly for online as Halo 4 did on 360.

I guess another angle is it makes title possibly too similar to other games vs being more clearly differentiated.

Assing the clips even valud of course.

This echoes my thoughts.

I guess the question I have for those who might know would be...what exactly was the primary cause for Halo 4's quick online population drop-off?

If it was because the game simply felt too much like COD (sprint, perks, etc)...and it looks like Halo 5 is repeating the same mistakes and making it even more like COD then that cant bode well.

Personally, I'm not bothered by sprint, ADS, perks, etc...simply because I really didn't play a lot of MP games last Gen and am not burnt out on COD nor do I have expectations of Halo. I played all the SP campaigns and that's it.

However, I DO have a concern if I buy a $60 game and enough other people hate certain features so badly they stop playing and the online dies quick like it did with Halo 4. I want my money's worth out of the purchase and if it looks like this game is going to follow Halo 4's path I'm probably better off waiting a year and picking it up for $20 or less rather than popping for a new copy at launch. I paid $10 for Halo 4 and love the SP campaign...but if id have paid $60 for the dead online id have been pissed.

In that regard my interests align with the "Halo purists" I suppose. Plus, even if sprint and ADS dont really bother me, its nice to play games with unique gameplay elements rather than just a bunch of carbon copy games with different graphical skins.

Edit: Looks like there have been some clarifications that have eased peoples minds. That's great news.

Ugh.

Fuck the prequels.

Same with the people escalating things with barely enough information to make that judgement anyway :P

But seriously those prequels are awful, but unfortunately cannon. Yet - I am still wrong, because troops are also hired in between those trilogies...

Halo 4 has people on edge.

I know I was concerned and will remain so until the beta.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm not sure how many people were around for the Halo 4 reveal, but there were concerns there too. I seem to recall 343i running some excellent damage control and putting most of the fears to rest.

Then the game came out, and it was Halo: Modern Warfare with armour abilities to boot.

I'll buy it because it's Halo. But I'm cautious with 343's handling of the multiplayer.

Now that I've actually seen the clips, it is cool that Josh did put out some clarification, will be interesting to see the game in action in it's current year-early beta state.

Sprint breaks my fucking heart. It really does. Fuck.

Wut.

As a huge Halo fan, these videos are disappointing for me. Apart from the descope confirmation, none of my other concerns have been put to rest.
Also, quick shoutout to 343i for continuing to fundamentally change Halo and chase the COD money. Next year we're getting a Halo with Sprint, ADS, boosters, double jumps, ground pounds and whatever else 343i thinks will be fun (even if it's not Halo). It's okay though - because you can't select one of these abilities they're no longer loadouts/AA's.

You are not a huge halo fan. I like it. I huge halo fan,

I like documentaries about war and urban legends/legends.

People saying COD is getting stale with the same old each year. Then Some say Halo should play safe and stick to its roots. Surely it becomes another COD in principle anyway?

Yup, it seems some people have forgotten the run up to Halo 4. It rivalled Destiny in how much damage control the developers were doing and how hollow their words rang when the game was actually released.

Basically, we've been here before. Let's wait for the beta before getting too excited.

If they got embarrased acting like that they'd probably know how to refrain from over reactions a little better in the first place.

Perhaps they'll know for the future then.

As a rule of thumb, don't declare one of the most successful gaming franchises of all time dead based on a two second leak.

The over reactions in this thread before the clarification, jesus. I bet you're all embarrassed now.

Not at all. ADS is a design choice based on a specific set of design needs. Needs which were already met by the Scope mechanic. So if there isn't a design need, this simply looks like a choice based on cynically providing visual comfort for COD players.

You said it yourself. CoD comes out every year. Mainline Halos come out every 3 years.

Im excited just reading OP. I am a fan of the series since day one and I'd be okay seeing a few changes to the formula. Give me a great story, fun gameplay and ensure that MP keeps a focus of power weapons and map control like H1-3 is all about and let me go. Spartan Armor has evolved over the years, it's silly to think that a Spartan can't ADS any weapon they pick up. Sprinting I felt was a great addition especially fitting in with the fiction of the books. I'll reserve pitchfork and fire feelings until the beta.

343 just shot themselves in the foot

Damn, I'm too late on making a version of this... but it would have gone

343 just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Halo culture (I'm an expert), but run and gun is a huge part of it. It's not like it is in CoD where you can become successful by getting a killstreak. If you screw up the gameplay in Halo, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the gaming public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase Halo 5 for either their system, nor will they purchase any of 343's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but 343 has alienated an entire market with this move.

343, publicly apologize and remove ADS and sprint from Halo 5 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

So they learnt nothing from Halo 4? Sprint and ADS don't work in Halo, 343. Thanks for the Halo 2 re release, that's all I'll need.

I can't really get upset after seeing those quick videos to be quite honest. They already gave us the classics redone for the next gen, they should be allowed a pass to experiment on the newest installment. It didn't look all that bad to me. As long as I can play halo 2 again im fine.
