Halo 5: Guardians |OT3| Ball Dropped

A little off-topic with some reeling in. Phil Spencer on upgrading hardware with backward/forward compat.

How would you guys feel if Halo always released on a new xbox console with a 3-4 year cycle? the main headliner to move to the next xbox?

Since we have REQ in place to always have support post launch, i dont think there would be much splitting in the community, if communication is handled right of course.

What do you guys think?

I just don't want to get new hardware that quickly, though. Honestly while there were downsides (and in comparison the new consoles aren't as powerful as last gen) I appreciated that the lifespan lasted 8 solid years.

I feel like consoles are becoming more like PCs, and that begs the question of why to get a console then. The standard locked specs and not having to piecemeal upgrade your rigs are part of the positive aspects of the system.

With regards to Halo though I'd completely be fine with them having a single MP experience and just continue to iterate on it with new maps and campaigns as opposed to a new full game each time.

I mean I won't say no to better looking Halo, but I'll buy on PC, they get my money either way lol

I think it's important to understand that the you wouldn't HAVE to upgrade your hardware in order to play the lastest games. Thanks to standardized UWA development, there would be tons of forward and backward compatibility. And developers would still have a limited set of hardware to target.

I'd be all for it. That's pretty much how often we get new Halo's anyway. The knowledge that I can make my halo prettier would be enticing especially since i'd know the playerbase would span both versions of the console.

I would be all over this. I already play games more on Xbox than PC due to my friends and not dealing with PC issues. If I could get new hardware along with halo (or a new Halo campaign with an expansion to Halo multiplayer) every 3-4 years I would be all over playing multiplatform games there too.

With how many strong weapons there are on all the maps now I really don't see the point in the powerups anymore, mainly because theyre bordering being too powerful. They just make it stupid hard to comeback or do anything in a game where the other team has control.

Halo 5 just had a small update for me. Anyone know what it's for?

It's just to stop people from getting outside maps and things.

Fixed an issue that caused invisible map barriers and walls to not function correctly, allowing players and objects to get outside the intended boundaries of a map
◾Fixed an issue that caused gravity volumes to not function as intended

Honestly, I'd like a social "no-parties" playlist. Destiny just added Freelance, so why not Halo?

Thank God. Hope it fixes the grifball court.

I ensure you, that was the basis for the fix.

Wow fuck this game... gold 3 after I got to gold 6 just yesterday. Guess I'm never going waste my time in any of the ranked playlists. Not even worth it. Ass hat ranking system confirmed.
I remember the last time you commented on power-ups lol, I thought to myself: "I want to comment, but it's probably just a temporary lapse of judgment. We all have those."

Don't worry though, I got you this time! ;b
Thanks lol

Nice to see the emblem pack for the season is continuing. I would still like to see way more in regards to player reward to gain player retention. Daily win pack and the seasonal awards are great but I'd still love to see challenges make a return.

And stuff like play streak bonuses like has been mentioned before.

That's just how it goes. I was a Diamond 1 in Slayer during season 1. Was placed in Platinum 3 last season even though I've raised my overall K/D by over .15. Not a big deal.

Deputy, let me tell you a secret:

The higher rank you go, the less fun it is when you solo.

You have sweats just thinking about the next match.

Relax and dont pay attention to the ranks. :)

Say hi to the new perma-Silver! God damn, I had particularly terrible teams in my placement matches, and got downranked from Gold 4 last placement to Silver 4. Here are my defeats:

March placement matches - 7 losses

Defeat 7 - 50-20 - Best of losing team - 13K 11D
Defeat 6 - 50-31 - Best of losing team - 15K 13D
Defeat 5 - 50-40 - 2nd best of losing team - 13K 12D
Defeat 4 - 50-29 - Best of losing team - 13K 13D
Defeat 3 - 50-39 - 3rd best of losing team - 6K 11D
Defeat 2 - 50-43 - 2nd best of losing team - 10K 13D
Defeat 1 - 50-27 - 2nd best of losing team - 10K 10D

K/D of placement matches overall 1.2

Nine people have placed so far. One onyx, seven plats, and one gold.

HaloGAF BK status confirmed.
Life has been in the way today :(

Emblem is like the same as last time though. :/

Your rank is as much about you as it is about others around you.

If other players are playing better then you, then regardless of where you ended up last season, it will place you below these said players.

I fully predict a diamond 3 placement myself.

Can someone remind me of why it's useful once a month to throw very mismatched players into 10 games and then re-rank them?

The only explanation I have heard is that if you accidentally end up in too high a medal during a month you can be reassessed and don't get stuck there. But that is simply a bad design choice in not allowing leveling down across medals.

Your rank that you see isn't what the game takes into account, that's just personal pride. The game looks at MMR (matchmaking rank) behind the scenes to match you with. Even if you somehow get stuck and diamond and are really gold tier, you will begin to notice that as you lose you will be facing lower rank players.

Sure, I figured as much, so why is that 10 game reset mechanic required at all? To create some monthly retention? Sorry if this is obvious.

Im thinking the same as you; Monthly retention. Might change soon depending on feedback. Seasons might become 2-3 months long.

Also when i think of seasons i think of the diablo 3 method and how it drives people to play like mad men or women.

They aren't typically throwing mismatched players into 10 games.

The MMRs of the people you play against in your placements will be the same as the people you played against at the end of the previous season.

Your MMR can drop below what your medal suggests, so people really aren't getting trapped in the wrong tier. That's why we've seen diamond tier players getting stomped on matches against golds. They had ranked up to diamond (probably illegitimately) but ended up in gold matches after losing streaks.

The placement matches only serve to recalibrate your MMR based on your individual individual performance to (hopefully) get you into matches with people who can perform similarly. This negates the effects of carrying and regression.

So just got banned from Xbox Live forever due to Marketplace Theft...???????

Tried calling and they directed me to a website where I have to basically take a quiz about Xbox Service to refute my ban. Got it wrong and now I have to wait 24 to take it again.

This could be the end of an era I guess. Spent 10 years on Xbox Live with that account and put thousands of dollars into it... So I guess I won't be able to play with you guys for a while.

Make a new account?

Uh I just got a 40 second ban for quitting too many arena games.

I only quit one game and that was four games ago when one of our team mates quit after his first death.

Yeah I think I'd be fine with three months cycle. Monthly means that even on the last day of the month you have a bunch of people in the ranking.

That is interesting. For some reason during the 10 games we had people in our team who went 2K 19D and the like, so our losing matches were up to 30 down which would imply seriously off MMRs. One guy in our team even ended up with negative kills. All these players had less than 10 games under their belt, I'd cry hard if their MMR was same as mine. :D

The matches since have been good, though. I am still matched against high golds like I was before my downranking, and I still often perform better than them.

Where is your MMR? if you are in an area with low pop, or are below plat, then I can imagine small differences in MMR could lead to large difference in performance...

Edit: you said you were gold and I looked right over it

I just want to know why I was placed in plat 1 in December when I was playing like absolute garbage. I've been getting better every single month since then and my ranking doesn't reflect the improvement.

December: Plat 1 - I played horribly but somehow get ranked un plat 1. didn't play many more ranked games after placing because I was really rusty and not used to Halo 5's new mechanics.
January: Gold 4 - only played a few ranked games after placing but definitely played better than when I placed plat 1.
February: Gold 1 - I played really well these placement games and won all but maybe 1 or 2 matches. Get placed gold 1? Okay whatever so i worked up to gold 6 because people said the system takes into account your previous placement only to get to...
March: Gold 3 - yeah wtf

So what is it? If I do well in my placement games the reasoning for my placement becomes that my competition was bad. If the system takes into consideration my previous place then it should definitely see that I at least put in some effort to go from gold 1 to gold 6. Now that I've been put at gold 3 the reasoning is that more people are playing better than me. Um yeah I'm not buying it. I'm not amazing but im far from sucking. And my stats show nothing but constant improvement. Moral of the story is apparently don't bother trying unless you have a lot of time to play and or teammates to play with.

I get that a lot of people don't like looking at the K/D Stat but it does show significant improvement for myself over 3 months of playing.
