Halo 5 Review Thread

Are people selectively reading parts of a review to suit their agenda here? Are they just jumping to the number score at the end of each review?

From what I've gathered the game play is superb and the level design of the campaign is fantastic again? But for some reason THIS is the game that doesn't get away with a poor playable character and a poor story? There have been a plethora of games which get a pass for poor gameplay due to a good story/characters and vice versa.

This thread has been a joke.

Pretty much what I have gathered. Wait to play the game and form your own opinion. Every person has their own agenda when reviewing and critiquing big titles like this. Nobody just enjoys games anymore.

I have played every Halo on a professional level and this one has the potential to be the best based on the pre-release gameplay. I'll form an opinion of the campaign later.

So instead of being amazing, the game is 'just' great.

People are disappointed that many reviewers dont find the game to be amazing. What's wrong with that?

MGSV did not deserve a 10/10. That is a FACT.

It's a fact that someone's opinion may differ from yours.

But, it's a fact that an opinion can't give a game a perfect score? Pft, please!

It's also a fact your use of the word fact is factually incorrect......shit I probably just screwed up using it myself.

halo needs to be amazing, Its Microsoft's flagship series. To me it seems like halo is going the cod route. Short, mediocre stories and great multiplayer. Both fronts need to be exceptional and anything less is completely unacceptable.

It was hyped up as amazing, like GOTY quality. Halo as basically touted as THE reason for owning a Xbox. An 85 won't stop any one from playing it, but I could why there would be a bit of disappointment. Every one likes confirmation that things they like are great, even if it is just other opinions.

85 can still be amazing...

How many 85 games are amazing? A lot.

I still have hope.

Oh Jesus...I just bought an xbone today for Halo 5. I haven't skimmed this thread but someone please tell me I am not going to regret just spending $500. Is it at least on par with Halo 3??

The average casual gamer isn't going to drop $400 for a game that isn't getting 9.5's and 10's on the major review sites

That's BS... Look what watch dogs, destiny, batman Arkham knight and infamous SS did for Sony's sales thanks to the hype and (for the 1st three) marketing deals...

Casuals want to play the big games, regardless of review scores.

Lots have said its the best Halo campaign yet. Lots of people have complained about the ending and compared it to Halo 2.

Enter with caution. I'm sure it's not a "bad game" by any stretch of the imagination.

I hope so. I don't care about the multiplayer just an amazing campaign.

play the game then judge for yourself, you already spent the money, why wait for people of the internet to tell you what to do.

You may or may not like the story, but the game is fun from beginning to end. The MP is arguably the best of the series, and easily the best of this gen IMO.

I'd say it's better than h3 on all fronts (MCC reminded me how much of a step back that game was for me in terms of gunplay)

Don't give the slightest fuck. I play Halo for one reason. If the MP's good, that'a bonus.

EDIT: Especially since that multiplayer no longer includes friends in my own house. No thanks.

Question. Would this current metacritic score actually turn someone away from buying this game? I'm genuinely curious.
Meta score didn't dissuade people from buying Destit in droves.

The emphasis placed on numbers in today's review culture is just ridiculous. Can we all just adopt Kotaku's review method? Please? Much more pertinent not only to gamers, but to the "average consumer."

Based on the reviews I've read so far, Locke isn't that popular and it was a mistake to favor him over Chief.

343 failed at portraying blue team well. Not surprised at all by that.

The game is linear like 4, with no big open play spaces like in the older games.

Seems like they pulled a Halo 2 and cut the ending out.

McCaffrey from Ign said 5 is the worse campaign in the series. The story and mission design is a mess. wow

Omfg. I just spent $500 expecting an amazing campaign at least on par with 3. But if this ends up worse than 4 then I a! Going to truly lose my shit.

I don't give a fuck if you care, I was shining some light to the other person reading your post who might care about Halo MP too. Not everything is about you.

OK. Well the game is installing now. I'll find out soon.

Been a while since I looked at metacritic but, slant magazine, action trip, cogconnected, we got this covered, and 30 more,. erm, probably me being old so no offense to your site but I've not heard of these before, thought I was on some spoof metacritic site, just kept scrolling and scrolling like I was in some lucid dream.

I don't recognize half the sites on metacritic

What is your reason? The narrative?

The narrative is part of it. Halo 1 was one of those games I played over and over and over single player and co-op because it was simply the best shooter, action game, or sci fi video game story I'd ever experienced at the time. It sprung me into the extended fiction in a way no other franchise ever had, but that has certainly tapered off in quality since 343 took over. Still waiting for a level as good as The Silent Cartographer. ;-)

Destiny was a bit of a bait and switch. No review copies sent out until launch, so plenty of people bought into it before there were any scores.

I was one of them. I jumped on a PS4 Destiny bundle but most likely would have waited if reviews were already out. I was expecting a 90 range game. Would I have made the purchase if t was an 85? Probably, but even that would have made me pause.

I'd relax, I don't really read much into reviews and critics these days, in any medium e.g movies or games. Having played half the campaign so far and the multiplayer beta I can say you're in good hands mate. The game is top tier Halo, up there with the best 1 or 2 games in the series, exactly where it falls as #1, #2 or #3 for you is subjective but I feel confident in saying it's top shelf. Just enjoy the game for what it is; Halo gunplay, movement, vehicles, environments, the music and characters in big scale space opera events. H5 delivers on all of those.

For me it's already the best campaign in the series, no doubt.

It's best you ignore the halo4 comparisons, this game has some of the best level design in the series.

People think of Silent Cartogropher, and recall halo CE being full of open areas. There are a few in the beginning of the game, but the second half is all back tracking and/or reused play spaces. There's really none of that nonsense in H5. It's really more like H3, but even the more linear H5 missions offer tons of tactical options.

I have noticed with IGN especially that if one review editor does not like the game, mysteriously everyone within IGN starts to trash it like its a hive mind. I know it is possible everyone genuinely did not like the story and what not but it feels like some of these guys dont have any individuality. I have never seen another IGN editor publicly disagree with a review or a score from another editor. It is always a hive mind.

Loads of people for days have been saying that it is amazing. You must have been around here reading the threads no??

Some silly fucking metacritic number and some hyperbolic posters on here should be taken with a truckload of salt. I have not bought a game off of a review since around 03.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
After watching a stream and reading impressions I feel as if this game will sit in between Reach and 4 as far as campaign ranking goes.

Fair enough. The narrative isn't great with this one. But it's an excellent shooter and action game. If you can put up with a mediocre story , I see no reason to skip on some of best gameplay (if not THE BEST) you'll find in an FPS so far this gen.

OK that sounds good. 98% installed! Didn't bother with the 9gb patch yet as I just want to focus on the campaign. First time owning an xbone so I have no idea how to update the gane manually.

Thanks to the other posters too. I had a bit of an anxiety attack haha.

Would be hilarious if this ends up being the best selling Halo game ever lol...

I'm very much into story driven games, so the lack of an amazing campaign is off-putting to me, and the glowing reviews for the campaign sound like fans of the franchise. Sounds like a great game that the media was hoping was going to be a new turning point for the FPS genre or something. I would just listen to someone who has similar taste as you.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I am absolutely done even reading reviews. They're all fucking friends with the developers. Yes, I know it's unavoidable considering how the industry works, but goddman after TPP was proclaimed to be the greatest thing ever when it actually was a shitty ass open world with literally one good mechanic (the actual stealth) it just makes me lose faith in at all.

Shit, sounds like i'm implying i took them seriously before. I just glance at them out of curiosity, but now I'm dunzo. Unless it's developed by some unknown piece of shit with no pull in the industry or is the game is an absolute disaster no one really gives an actual accurate review. Reviews are shit and most reviewers are annoying, unqualified dinks who think they know it all anyway

edit^: TPP had the potential to be a 10/10 but the barren open world shit and copypasted main/sideops are inexcusable. LAFFO And I'm the biggest MGS dickrider there is.

On the other end of the spectrum I feel the toxicity of score driven reviews, and threads like this (which I'm just as guilt of contributing to and creating), cultivate reactionary behaviour from posters wherein a binary status is given to a game's quality (GOTY vs HUGE DISASTER) instead of just reading the reviews, realising most "reviewers" in all their unqualified glory have little difference to the people posting here, and the purpose of a review is not to communicate a Score-out-of-Ten but to articulate the strengths and weaknesses of a title as seen from that reviewer's entirely subjective opinion.

Even so, using this thread as an example, almost all the reviews lean heavily on "positive" over "negative". The game is reviewing exceptionally well both in score and text, with variations on the negative aspects. The only seemingly borderline unanimously agreed upon negative aspect is Locke's stretches of campaign, due to being less interesting and engaging than Master Chief. As well as the story maybe suffering "middle of the trilogy" syndrome.

And maybe you and others will feel the same way. Some wont. Because that's how subjectivity works.

My ranking:

Story:
2> CE > 4> 3> 5 > Reach

Gameplay:
Reach> 5> trilogy

Level design:
Trilogy>5>Reach>4

but I'd swap CE and 2 for story... IMO halo CE is the only really good story in the series...

Level design I'd have to swap 5 and the trilogy... Every game in the trilogy has some absolute stinkers. And CE in particular got way to linear and repetitive in the second half (though the game is home to the greatest level of all time)

Gameplay I'd say 5,2,1,3,reach,4. The Spartan abilities added a lot of depth to the basic formula it's addicting. 3 ruined the feel of many weapons, and equipment sucked. Reach ruined the sandbox with armor abilities. And 4 continued the trend with Loadouts.

Won't raw unit sales prevent that? The Xbox 360 was in way more households when Halo 3 and Halo 4 were released.

When Halo 4 released? Sure. Not so sure about Halo 3. Hasn't the Xbox One been outpacing the 360's sales? Halo 3 released 22 months 360 launched, Halo 5 is releasing 23 months after the Xbox One launched.

Oh man, it's not even up for debate. If this game was getting 60's I'd still be playing it at midnight. I'll finish it on heroic, then on legendary before I ever touch the multiplayer. I just hope it's better than Halo 4, which was the definitive low point of the series for me.
