Halo |OT12| Last One Out, Get the Lights

uh, I've never actually considered using the carbine as my primary but I just gave it a go. I don't know why tests showed it wasn't as effective as dmr/br but I'm absolutely destroying with it, especially in more chaotic encounters involving multiple enemy players and team members. with many enemies having taken damage the high rate of fire results in multikills galore.

They took away a lot of how badass the Chief was by saying
"It was me, I planned this forever ago/geas bullshit" - Librarian, space Jesus bullshit.

Yea. That really was stupid. Chief went from being a badass to a product of a Forerunner lab. Might as well put a made by Forerunner label on the back of his neck.

Are Halo 2 .gifs HaloGAF's new thing?

I have a sudden urge to play. Anyone up for Halo 2 Vista?
Man if I had been up I so would have. One of these weekends we'll have to get some Halogaf Halo 2 vista games going.

I felt the same way in the beginning but the dmr is just more reliable

yeah, 1v1 DMR > carbine still.

but as I've come to accept in infinity slayer, due to instant respawn and just general chaotic gameplay, those 1v1 encounters are far and few between lol

So, I stumbled upon a gametype with sprint disabled. My assumption was that it's modded, but wouldn't that mean it's tied to player traits in order for it to work on retail consoles, implying that there could have been a toggle slapped in for it?

Just because something is modifiable by mods does not mean there could have been a toggle for it or that they held it back intentionally even if it could be.

See also: species model force in Reach. An option available by scripting but didn't have a toggle because the stuff that handled it was too delicate to offer one.

Either way, its kind of embarassing we had to rely on a modder to get a gametype that should have been available from the get go.

I wonder if they can mod in the red X's.

Nonono, I didn't mean that as in that they held back a toggle or that there was one at one point, rather that because the trait can be altered and used on retail consoles that then couldn't it have been possible for a toggle to have been created for it (or isn't it possible for a toggle to be patched in, seeing as how 343i isn't afraid of using RAM) had they decided to do so?

It's actually nice though, since it gets rid of sprint breaking forge remakes, and since it's supposedly a player trait (coming from the guy who made the gametype, not me) it should be able to be done with all gametypes, which makes me curious as to if a classic Assault variant could be modded.

Could assault be made using the grifball? I think the only thing its missing is arm time. And disarm time.

If you could somehow attach the Dominion taking base mechanic to the oddball being in the scoring zone, it could work.

I also have no idea what im talking about.

Depends on how they set it up. If my previous theory that Sprint is actually just an AA that everyone is forcibly given when the match starts (then the sprint button is mapped to trigger this AA), if the modders got rid of it by making the script forcibly delete it then it might not be toggle-able. We also don't know if something bad could happen if say, you made the Sprint button Thrust and the normal AA Jetpack at the same time..

I guess in theory they could TU and add it as a toggle, but we're talking about a studio that could have added proper HUD changes and UI changes for bloom and Halo 1 Mode in Reach but didn't, partly because the TU team was so small. Depends on how big of a team Microsoft pays for to do TUs. You have to have enough manpower and time because you're fucking with the UI code along with engine code.

edit: In theory it would maybe be possible to do it as a Script Menu Option (ie the ___GAMETYPE____ Options menu in Reach that the scripts were in charge of populating), but that would result in permanent loss of the script memory to that feature as you'd have to include it going forward. Invasion apparently never had a TU version nor got Supershields because the script was maxed out.

I agree. At least someone at 343 has acknowledged that they are really listening though.

Yeah but it seems their priorities are off. They'll seemingly fix anything matchmaking before fixing the customs options.

And their matchmaking fixes range from high priority = complex glitch (glad it was fixed)
to fixing jump exploits on Haven, which I had never seen.

I just want the next bulletin to say we are aware of the ordnance glitches. We are aware of custom options not working. This is what we can do right now easily (ie. adding kill barriers in maps, POSSIBLY fixing options/ordnance in a soft patch) And this is what we're working on for our first update to the game (red x's/indicators being clearer, custom options, ordnance bugs fixed)

Literally all I ask from them.

Master Chief being
the ONE really killed it for me.
But yeah, I like that he is a little less robot like.
Wait I thought she was talking about
the humans, advancing and reclaiming the mantle of responsibility or whatever. not that she specifically planned 'master chief' to be the reclaimer. By imprisoning the didact she allowed humans enough time to rebuild

How do you see that as having their priorities off? Surely the percentage of the population that matchmaking issues affect is exponentially larger than the number of people custom options issues affect.

I agree, but I think something like jump exploits on haven, something I haven't seen talked about anywhere, nor seen in gameplay, and other such rarities in matchmaking, are of lesser importance than customs options.

Fair enough. I did notice something odd on Haven last night (this was in flood so take it with a grain of salt). A spartan was able to get up on an outside ledge of one of the top mid corner pillars. Granted, in normal gameplay this isn't an issue, it just surprised me.

I just want them to fix all the ordnance related bugs.

Would be great if the studio ever made a public facing list, blog post, whatever, so we actually know what is happening in the way of fixes. Like other AAA games.

Do console studios normally do this? I feel like being a PC gamer has spoiled me from that kind of feedback from devs.

I guess I've been spoiled by BF3; don't know if other games do this as I typically only purchase 1-3 games per year.

Great article, guys. Ram, your son is adorable in that picture.

Holy crap - I just noticed that if you're looking at your stats on Halo Waypoint (app.halowaypoint.com) and you hit the little 'i' in the bottom left corner, you can turn off the animated background!

Way cool. That annoyed me. ;)
A word of advice, 343. Your site has long suffered from being able to access it with any consistency. If you add a feature that needs a switch so people can turn it off, DON'T ADD THE FEATURE. Give me stats that are easy to read and find, not clutter it up with animations that mask the lack of content and quality.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Might as well start off the morning with a rant:

Why the multiplayer lobbies are so poorly thought out? I could have been behind the large and ugly player cards if they offered anything of value to me as an opponent. They don't. A player cannot use a Specialization until s/he's completed it, so having that listed on the bottom of the card is absolutely meaningless. All I get to see is how someone chooses to look, which has absolutely nothing to do with what kind of perks they chose to use. It's baffling that 343 would choose to move to such a useless format when previous Halos relayed information in the best way possible.

I'd also like to be able to tell who's in a party together, you know, like Reach did so elegantly. I can't. I can see that people have mics and may or may not be in a party chat just so they don't have to hear screaming children curse them out, but that's about it. I was under the mistaken impression that matchmaking would pair solo players with other solo players, but after playing Team Regicide last night, that's very much not the case. I got paired with three other people for one match (the only way I could tell was because they had the same emblems), and later played against what had to have been full teams because we just got destroyed fast. If I would have been able to tell that I was playing against a team of people, I would have backed out and started searching again. Perhaps that last statement is why such meaningful information isn't presented to the player any more; fast matches seem to be the only real concern for this game.

The lack of anything relevant in the lobby is just extremely poor form. 343 can't even be bothered to put up gametype information while waiting for the match to start (which to be fair, Bungie stopped doing after Halo 2). I know this can/will never be fixed for this game, but I hope going forward that 343 moves in a better direction with the lobby system.

So... What happened to this page of the stats in game?

As far as I can tell, there's no way to see the final score after a match has ended... Unless of course I'm missing it in the jumbled mess that is the UI.

Yeah - I posted about this yesterday too. Very frustrating to have no post game stat screen that shows the final score. Seems so obvious and so simple.

Hey, that's pretty neat.

Jeff's announcements regarding the flag comes through the in game speaker system on Harvest.

I like stuff like that.

Are the card suit emblems still in the game? My buddy used to use a heart emblem and is pretty bummed there are none. Maybe it still has to unlock?

343i hired a guy for doing the MP stuff at the bulletin. I may think we will get more details about changes, fixes etc.

The CTF on Harvest video from yesterday.

It happens throughout the match, but you can hear it more clearly at the 6.19, 6.30 and 7.03 mark.

Or am I imagining things?
Yes. I noticed it too and it is a neat detail. I hope the map appears a lot in the CTF playlist. :)

Yes! I agree! The UI looks nice but it is missing a tons of information. Maybe they can fix it

I can only suggest an appointment for the optometrist for anyone who thinks the UI in this game is 'nice'. Seriously, it's bad.

I would love to hear one good reason why 343 decided Halo 4 need a completely new UI apart from it being changed for the sake of change.

It looks cool, soul sister.

That's it.

I feel like King Regicide is a solid game type IF you get a good team to do it. Too often with randoms it turns into a cluster fuck where the guy who is king doesn't give a shit to hide his dumb ass. :/

My only complaint right now after this last update is the issues with weapons stuck in the floor on Haven. Who the fuck did this at 343? Fire that dip shit.

when I first started up halo 4 I was pleased with the more blue theme similar to halo 3.

then after a minute I realized how backwards it is compared to pretty much every previous halo.

the singing (wailing?) has gotten kinda creepy now too.

Words cannot describe my anger at the loss of the e Dorian theme at the menu. It's what made Halo IMO. So memorable... Halo 4 doesn't have a theme or memorable tune at all :/
