There are these devices called "computers" where you can go to "lobbies" and pick "servers" to play on.

Given u4ix's quote let's rephrase to "overpowered" then. That's cool though, didn't know that.

You didn't know that? What about your clan Halo days?

He couldn't learn everything playing at his friends house that one time. Give him some slack.

Also, what are these "servers" and "lobbies"? I'm too old for this new hip lingo. I'm too busy yelling at kids to get off my lawn and preaching about the glory days and those original Duke Xbox controllers that I love.

Fine, I'll go back to playing Halo 4.

EDIT: Fuck I meant Countdown not Construct. I stand by everything else, yoloswag4jesus.
The reason Countdown worked like that is because default Countdown was an outright abomination in map design / weapon placement. It's not a comment on the shotgun, bro. Now, we have a slightly similarly designed map (Adrift) and the same shit happens except all the time because of the boltshot that *everyone* is carrying. They didn't learn from the mistakes of old. Same reason that active camo AA is baffling. Or jetpack.

I never knew you could spawn with the sword, shotgun, sniper, rockets, hammer...

I mean boltshot only has about a 20 yard range, one shot kill capability that you can spawn with. No biggie.

We're apparently not using the sandbox correctly to our advantage. Camo boltshot here I come.

Shotgun vs pistol: 1sk vs 3sk
Sniper rifle vs pistol: 1sk vs 3sk
Rocket launcher vs pistol: 1sk vs 3sk

verdict: pistol op

hahaha

You can compare power weapons to spawn weapons all you want. But I'll get at what you want.

The pistol only functions well when the team skill and knowledge is equally distributed among all of the players. Otherwise it becomes a death machine in someone's hands. It's why it's highly lauded in the competitive community and it rightfully should be. It is the easiest, maybe best way, to show greater skill in a player versus player environment. But it breaks down when you get to semi-competitive and casual levels. At Halo's core it needs to have a strong competitive environment, while still fostering and tending for those other types of players. The CE Pistol neglects that last part. 4 and Reach neglected the core. Both situations are bad, but failing to create a solid core will eventually kill the outside.

Lol you guys are brutal.

Good point, YourExWife. I really enjoy both those maps you mentioned for their mix of mid-range and close range battles, so that could be where our differences stem from.

I miss the Dukes so much.

On the other end of the spectrum, I used to own a really small OG Xbox controller, that one was nice too.

I was mostly saying that the claim that it's OP misses the mark because most of your options were highly powerful. Being able to massacre those that didn't have as good a grasp on it isn't a problem in the slightest. I'd strongly disagree at the claim that the CE pistol neglected that last part, as if that were the case the game probably wouldn't have exploded as it did.

As does the sword, shotgun, scattershot, hammer, and every other power weapon in the game. If anything, the Boltshot discourages campers, since now anyone can approach them with a default loadout and make them pay. I recall some Rampages in Halo: Reach's Construct map where whomever had the shotgun could dominate a match. I think that's where a lot of the saltiness regarding Halo 4 is coming from. It's easier for a regular Joe to keep up with a "pro player" due to the chaotic design of the multiplayer. But like Mario Kart, there is still a discernable difference between top level and scum players. As someone said, adaption.

In CE, I recall plenty of cave dwellers online in Blood Gulch creeping around waiting to get the 3-shot. There just aren't many wide expanses for Team Slayer in Halo 4 (outside of the ridiculous BTB), so Boltshot's effect is overstated.

EDIT: Some are arguing that a 3-shot pistol with heavy zoom is not overpowered. Alright, I tried. PEAAACCEEE /u4ix
Boltshot is a good power weapon but for god sakes take it out of the loadouts.

By the way guys, if you have some money you want to spend, get mark of the ninja.

I'm a bit tired, so I'll just respond with a small anecdote. I got Halo 2 to find out what Guilty Spark was doing in space, not because I "liked" the MP. In fact, I didn't like the MP because it usually just devolved into me using the Pistol. And if you're going to argue explosiveness Halo 2 and Xbox Live would like a word with you.

That's fine, here's mine. I was excited for Halo 2 because I loved the way Halo CE played-- both in campaign and multiplayer. I didn't care about Guilty Spark or Master Chief or any of the characters as the plot was only a device for level and encounter design to me. 2's Xbox Live popularity was one thing, but the clout CE originally garnered and what it did for console splitscreen/LAN parties isn't one to be discredited. I don't think it's a stretch to say that Halo CE was a popular game, and it was also well known for its multiplayer component; which is something you claim the pistol shouldn't allow.

However this will go nowhere as there's nothing either of us will legitimately say about the connection between utility weapons and the respective popularity of the titles. The pistol is simply not OP because all the options were powerful, the shotgun and rocket launcher were also some of the most ridiculous versions of those weapons as are the grenades.

Boltshot in the loadouts reminds me of Vanilla Guardian's Mawlers. That was fairly quickly addressed, no?

I remember seeing images of the Duke when the Xbox was first shown and the that jewel in the middle of the controller was always shown in electric green implying that it glowed. Was so disappointed when I got my XBOX and it didn't didn't glow at all. Fortunate thing about getting the XBOX then is that they launched the JSRF/Sega GT packkage with the new controller S a few weeks later and I was able to trade in/replace the XBOX I got with this new model. Controller jewel still didn't glow but at least the controller felt better.

Btw, I think those controllers were built better than the flimsy junk they use for the 360.

Am I really the only one who plays shooters with inverted look? Even the gf thinks its stupid.

That's how I've always played on console since the N64 days. I don't actually know why I do, but it works for me at least

Inverted makes complete sense.

My argument has always been that from a first person perspective, if you had your thumb on the top of your head, how would you tilt it to look up? You'd tilt it back, vice versa for looking down, you'd push your head forward.

Anyway, are we all in agreement the Sticky Launcher is fucking inconsistent?

This post is a troll, right? It reads like the game hasn't come out yet and your theorizing what the possible impact of the Boltshot is. How the hell does it discourage campers? Your under the assumption that the people running around always know where campers are and are equally prepared to ambush them. When in fact campers usually only are in places where they can get a one hit kill, and they only stand a chance using the Boltshot themselves, AND are still at a disadvantage because they're the aggressors walking into a trap.

And praising MK in any competitive sense at the same time?

My goodness.

Inverted is obviously the superior option. I can't imagine playing without it

No, a bunch of people do. A lot of 360 games default to Inverted sticks, too (ignoring the default I've set, bastards).

If you want to get weird looks, use Legacy like I do.

Someone I play with uses Legacy Lefty Inverted.

You guys a strange,

If i want to look up why would i push down?

You don't push right to look left.

Inverted controls are only acceptable as flying controls because it mirrors a flight stick.

People are not aircraft

Imagine a stick coming out the back of your head.

Pull down to look up, push up to look down.

If I'm holding a camera, I tilt the back of it upwards to look down.

The other way around w/ default sticks is imitating a mouse.

Both make sense.

I see what the reasoning with inverting controls I just don't like the added layer of complexity that is added then attempted to be explained.

Normal = Up is Up
Inverted Up is Down because thats how you move a stick on the back of your head/flight stick/bottom of a camera ect.

In other (more fun) discussion. I got a vita for Xmas from the GF. Iv pretty much been playing mortal kombat on it exclusivity since I opened it and I am loving it.

Still need to get the presents off the majority of my family but I expect very little

it's not an added layer of complexity. it feels perfectly natural for those of us that play inverted. a part of our brains probably work differently or something. Ive tried playing non inverted and it just feels clumsy and forced for me, like I'm trying to PUSH the reticule around like it's a mouse pointer or something. but it's a joystick, not a mouse.

----

on the topic of boltshot being a loadout weapon evening the playing field. i don't see how anyone, except for the people who cant keep a shotgun for very long, would defend this. you're spawning with a power weapon, period. it's as bad as camo being a loadout ability.

Yeah, the Boltshot is like Mauler part 2: The Maulening which is technically part two of another Mauler that had 1SK capability.

A little preview of something Ive been working on. Its an inverse symmetrical map somewhat based off of Citadel from Halo 3 and a map I made in Reach.

I don't. I have fairly large hands, but the Duke feels awkward, probably because I never got used to playing on it. We had a CE LAN at my cousin's in August, and I just could not claw the face buttons correctly. I would melee every time I wanted to jump.

Someone is equating the boltshot to the CE pistol. May God have mercy on your soul.

Why? The sticky detonator is one of the good addition to the franchise, even if it replaces the GL. And inconsistent? No. I am always getting a kill when I place it right.

Yeah, I used to love the Duke, but now that I'm used to the 360 controllers, I can't go back. It has less to do with the size (I have large hands too), and more to do with the way the face buttons are arranged. I'm always hitting the wrong buttons.

The sticky detonator is one of the very few additions in Halo 4 that I'm genuinely happy with. Didn't like it at first but once you get the hang of it, it's very satisfying to get kills with.

I think you're reading that wrong. I see seven playlists with three gametype voting options each. Ranked/unranked would double that to 14. At a glance it doesn't seem like a bad wishlist.
You cannot play things like CTF, KotH, and Oddball with personal ordnance drops. It would be butt.

Looks like one of the latest paid DLC maps. I always thought they made Harvest in Forge then gave it a coat of sheen. Seriously though, nice looking map.

I'm one of the few on gaf who doesn't have a great problem with the Boltshot. Any other Halo I'd have a problem with it as a spawn weapon, but in Halo 4? It seems to fit with its overarching philosophies of spoiling the player with lots of treats off of spawn. Plasma's on spawn annoy me (point blank sticks from noobs), Camo on spawn disgusts me, PV can stifle encounters and Hardlight can leave you feeling cheated out of a kill when they whip it out when one shot. The Boltshot however doesn't annoy me and it's because, personally, I've considered melee to be the cheapest part of the golden triangle since Halo 3. AR beat downs and sprint double melee were vulgar in their effectiveness to skill required ratio. Both are present in Halo 4 and both are satisfactorily negated by the Boltshot.

Something that Halo 4 really excels at over the previous games (in MM) is that I never feel underpowered or weak on spawn. So refreshing in contrast to older Halo's where if an AR/Pistol start was voted in, I'd feel like quitting immediately and spend a lot of the game looking for a BR/DMR when I spawned. Now I'm guaranteed a worthy precision rifle off spawn and a weapon that is very effective at close range where opponents who were not as good as me would often tap a button and magnetise-lunge into me for a very cheap kill. I feel powerful and deadly at spawn and that's something I'm thankful for. As I said, if it was serious 4v4 arena Halo this was in I'd dislike it but this is Halo 4, who gives a fuck bro? There's one body-shot kill Binary Rifles randomly falling out of the sky at peoples feet (happened to me several times) and players are instantly respawning after I fairly killed them to finish me off when one shot. Boltshot is at least something I can rely on as a consistent factor when so much is Fiesta-flavoured randomness in Halo 4.

Also I can't say I've had anywhere near the level of network problems some posters are claiming to have. Pretty sure I've never been killed by a silent Boltshot. Judging by the posters here I must be very lucky in that I get very few laggy matches.
