Halo |OT18| We're Back Baby!

Hey dudes, I made a re-design of the Halo 4 BR because I think the current one looks like an aluminum space FAMAS:

Lemme know what you guys think, I'm gonna combine the best parts from A and B to make a fancy colored version like this.

It's not bad, but it looks more like a real world rifle than a Halo weapon.

I like it, but I think the curves on the butt / front of the gun are what's throwing people off. The UNSC weapon's we've seen save for Halo 4's weird squishy organic ones largely relied on straight lines and right angles with more angular shapes cut out of the corners. If you turned those straight lines with curved corners rather than straight-up arcs I think it'd look a lot more UNSC-ish.

The butt of the gun reminds me a lot of Reach's Assault Rifle, though.

I actually intentionally made it curvier because I always thought the Halo 4 BR looked like it belonged to the Prometheans just a little too much with how angular it was, especially compared to previous versions of the BR. But, overkill and whatnot could be a thing.

I actually intentionally made it curvier because I always thought the Halo 4 BR looked like it belonged to the Prometheans just a little too much with how angular it was, especially compared to previous versions of the BR. But, overkill and whatnot could be a thing.
I don't think it looks Promethean, but it lacks a lot of the gentle/subtle curvature that UNSC arms typically had. My problem with your BR is that it forgoes a lot the boxiness of the classic BR variants because the Halo 4 one is extremely boxy and too much like a cheap looking FAMAS. I do like the idea of bringing the curves back, but they're a little too long and too much, in my opinion. Break them up a bit. Otherwise it kind of smacks of some Mass Effect guns.

Looking at the forend of the Halo 3 variant, you can see how it juts a bit at the end closer to the butt and then has the curve. Yours is more organic and is a gentle slope, but again, it's a bit on the long side. Same with the top end. Maybe you could mix the two designs together a bit? I'm probably explaining this all poorly.

I like the A variant more for its Halo 3-esque scope, but I'd like it to be a little longer. I'm also curious to see what the B variant would look like with a longer scope.

Other than that, I think it's a smidgen loud design wise. I personally believe the Halo 4 version is extremely overdesigned, though, so at least you dialed it back from there. Halo 3's might be a bit minimalistic in comparison to recent designs, but I do appreciate its simplicity. I do like your version's butt quite a bit (lol).

I stopped posting in the GTA OT because people don't know how to spoiler properly or not write story details.

I play the game pretty regularly. Tried GTA Online today before the HaloGAF customs for the first time. Wasn't as fun as I thought. Too many random people just killing you over and over, destroying your car. I'd rather just screw around in single player than online.

I have to say, I disagree.

I think A looks pretty "UNSC" to me. More so than the redesign in Halo 4 even. Maybe it's just the triangles, but it makes me think of a "modern" Halo 2 BR and I certainly wouldn't complain if we ever got a weapon that looked like that in the game.

Thanks for the detailed feedback, I will definitely try that stuff. I actually have a longer scope ready to go in Photoshop, but opted to go for smaller ones since big scopes equal longer range in my mind (ie, stepping on the DMR's toes). And I was trying to gen it up the Halo 4 standards, but someone went insane with panel lines on that thing, so dialing down sounds good. Glad you like the, uh, butt. I was trying to make the outline noticeably different from the DMR bygoing for an HK416 butt pad.

So I need some help with Ricochet ball spawns. It's only spawning at one point even though I have 3 other points with the exact same tags and everything. Why?

I think the silhouettes of both your designs are great, and would totally work in Halo. It's the details inside them make it look a little too cool for the UNSC, if that makes sense. I think if you toned down some of the cosmetics and gave the impression of form-following-function, it'd look great.

ps I also think H4 BR is over designed, so yeah. Salt grains.

I mostly associate Promethean tech with floating pieces, vertical lines and 45 degree angles, with "power conduits" scattered throughout that likewise contain lines / 45 verts and circles. UNSC stuff is generally more angular and blocky, but organic / circular if it's for the sake of "realism" (see Rocket Launcher tubes, etc.)

I finally got GTAO working the other day so I've been on a bunch. Likewise Menachite (GAF regular, honorary halogaf member) has been on a lot, but lives in the UK so mostly plays in the morning for me since I'm CST.

It's mostly the front. I'd say my preferred one would be 2, but with 1's scope and larger trigger handle thing.

I thought I joined that already. apparently not.

Won't be playing Online until the 17th (capped Internet can't handle the higher bandwidth requirement, have to wait until it's reset), but I'm generally on a fair bit. Seems to be pretty buggy with people losing their characters now anyway. Don't want to risk it.

Creating Ball Spawns (rico_ballspawn)

Place a Capture Plate to serve as your ball spawn location.
Note: You can use any object you like to spawn the ball, but many will exhibit odd behaviors.
Set the Team to Neutral.
Gametype Labels: rico_ballspawn – The ball will spawn at this location
Spawn Sequence
Set this to the order in which you want this ball to spawn, starting at 1.

User data
If you want to customize where the ball appears relative to the Capture Plate when it spawns, we have provided some numbers you can apply to the User Data to adjust the ball’s starting position. This will only apply when the Initial Ball Physics option (in the Ricochet game mode options) is set to ‘Fixed’:
User Data 0 = 0.5 units above the Ball Spawn plate (Default)
User Data 1 = 2.5 units above the plate – much higher
User Data 2 = 0.5 units out to the side of the plate
User Data 3 = 2.5 units out to the side of the plate
User Data -1 – the center of the plate
User Data -2 = -0.5 units below the plate
User Data -3 = 2.5 units below the plate
User Data -4 = -0.5 units to the side of the plate (i.e. opposite direction to setting 2)
User Data -5 = -2.5 units to the side of the plate (again, opposite to setting 3)
Any numbers not listed above will be ignored, and the ball will spawn in default location.

Try that.
 
If you have the spawns set to 0, that might be the problem. I had to manually go in and assign a spawn sequence for my Ricochet plates.

3rd version, with less curves. Culled some of the smaller detail, added essentially a copy of the Halo 3 scope, which is bigger.

The rail looks too unnatural to me. The break is too clean and angular. Looked much better curved, IMO.

edit. Is there a reason you're making these or is it just 'cause?

I like that one a lot. If that thing were in Halo 5 I'd perfectly happy. The only thing I'd adjust is the size in the gap of the top rail, making it a bit narrower, but it helps it stand out from the small gaps of the 3 and 4 versions and (presumably) the FAMAS.

Yeah that was the one guys mistake for sure.

For those that can't watch the video, the part in question:

Some dude: "Microsoft actually handled that masterfully with TitanFall and Halo both coming out in the first half of next year."
Geoff Keighley: "Is Halo the first half of next year?"
Same dude: "They said...I think they said that."

Then they go on to PS4/Destiny stuff.

Seems like some type of screw up to me. Dunno.
