Destiny is not going to be the game we're looking for.

It seems that developers are tired of straight-forward arena shooters. We're probably see the genre come back in style in a few years when Halo 2 and 3 are as old as Atari games or some ridiculous shit like that.

The game I'm looking for is designed around all of its mechanics from the ground up and is balanced appropriately through systems that make sense for those elements. As far as I'm concerned, in the right context, there's kind of no such thing as a bad idea, only bad execution. Destiny has a shot for me precisely because it's doing its own thing and they know that these tertiary elements are going to impact the base mechanics already, something that would have been impossible to predict when Halo's core was built. This generation's Halo games tried to fit new ideas into the old context without upsetting that initial balance, and that core didn't always mesh with them very well which resulted in the myriad issues that cropped up. Starting from scratch with all of that in mind, there's the potential for that not to be an issue.

Whether the new stuff will be executed well is a much bigger question, and I have my doubts about some of what they're saying. I think caution is totally healthy when reading their plans for multiplayer, but mostly I'm just excited to see what solutions they arrive at. Even if I don't agree with what they do, they've got a whole new set of challenges facing them and success or not, they always do something interesting. I guess I look at it like this: I know exactly, 100% what I want out of a Halo multiplayer, down to very specific gametype settings and weapon behavior, and I know that ultimately, I'll probably never get something like that....and I also know that I'll always compare the newest release to what I think is the ideal Halo, and that's not a favorable or even fair comparison. I can't say the same for Destiny. It's a whole new thing, for better or worse.

Yea I wasn't expecting it all. I definitely see Reach's influence with the things like supers, but Call of Duty has a bigger influence imo.

I suppose I'm being close-minded by wanting more of the same style of game. Regardless, I hope it turns out to be a fun and balanced game. I'll have to maintain my "wait and see" stance on the game; I doubt it'll be balanced and even if it is I may not enjoy it.

Combining this with Destiny's art style is why I'm okay with what we've seen so far. I'm not expecting Halo whatsoever, not to mention Halo will probably be releasing around that time anyway.

Going into Destiny without those expectations would be ideal for people for accept. It was apparent many years ago that Bungie wanted to have more creative freedom in their design, but Halo quickly grew into something specific, not to stray too far from its core formula.

I generally agree and talking with some Bungie guys at PAX, several people shared almost this exact sentiment when people would bring up the traditional Halo core when talking about something for Destiny.

That said, I like the idea of Destiny, but they haven't wowed be with the gameplay they've shown yet.

I believe it's you start with your custom stuff but universal "heavy ammo" is on the map to find. So you have custom stuff but a shared, for any player or custom weapons, different ammo to the baseline "loadouts" that you have to find to actually use them.

I don't feel like it is, but maybe there's more to the title than I think. Last I recall he was "franchise writer", so I dunno if this is a promotion, a horizontal move, or just a clarification of his previous role.

As for thoughts, I kind of agree with this chap on the first page:

I can already sense the negative reaction that approaches, but I'll try to be optimistic about it.

Optimism:

While Spartan Ops certainly had its flaws in terms of writing, I felt that Jul 'Mdama was probably the best Halo Villain I've ever seen. While Halsey's story in SpOps can be seen as writer-bias, I actually appreciated both her role, and Jul's, in the story. Both of them, even under Reed's influence, were very dynamic characters and endured a lot of interesting events in the story.

That said some of his comments about the story feel like he just threw his first idea up on the wall rather than really polishing or refining it.

A non-shooter Halo title (no spartan ops / wahrers) would be neat. I've said it before, but I really want a Journey-styled "art student shitstorm visual experience hipsteravaganza" where you have an atmospheric ride through the events of the Forerunner trilogy, or at least something during the events of the Forerunner-Flood War. I feel like the ancient space politics and in-story journeying with vivid descriptions could be whittled down to a game pretty easily while still allowing for the galactic conflict to underscore the whole thing sort of like how the war machines are this dormant, underlying presence in Journey.

Likewise, a more "passive" Halo title that's a FPS, but has just as much world building, exploration and easy riding / puzzle-esque gameplay in addition to thickly-woven, frenetic combat would be great. Something like Metroid Prime, really.

Would love to see halo metroid prime, absolutely love all of those games.

I don't feel like it is, but maybe there's more to the title than I think. Last I recall he was "franchise writer", so I dunno if this is a promotion, a horizontal move, or just a clarification of his previous role.

As for thoughts, I kind of agree with this chap on the first page:

That said some of his comments about the story feel like he just threw his first idea up on the wall rather than really polishing or refining it.

SpOps was predictable. The only things that really took me by surprise were:

• Janus Key
• Dr. (Pirate) Halsey
• Requiem Super Nova

Everything else was alright. That Halsey Drama needs to stop (I think 343 made their point about her past. But Im afraid it has only begun) . The Terminals story was brilliant. That has so much potential in terms of Animation & Dialogue over another SpOps hybrid story/episodic feature.

Ended up playing a lot of CE, good times.
Stalker, Juggernaut, Crazy King, Rockets, CTF

Everyone got destroyed by my one coworker who is apparently a ringer at MvC3, fucker went 8-0

Played a bunch of Halo 4 to end the night.

*Could not access any DLC maps, which limited my pool for specific things I had setup (fucking screams) and the sign in process was infuriating because of the online check prompt, dlc prompt, and xp prompt of every single player.

**Other than that, Halo 4 went well, no game altering lag even on my forge maps, TONS of pop-in, including some hilarious pops on Adrift (using the lifts, imagine half the "base area" is invisable til you land) but good experience. Looking forward to tomorrow with more than 5 people.

***never realized how huge a movie screen is, till your not watching a movie on it. Games looked fucking awesome
