I tear it up in Anniversary. I dunno why I'm so much better in it than default or TU Reach...

Less crutches for people to hide behind would be my guess. Could also be (if you play it less) that you're being put up against people less skilled than you.

Just played anni classic alone, went 21 and 5 and got 3 friend requests.

Feels good, man.

Oh man, that reminds me of that weekly challenge where you had to get 200 multikills. I did it all in one night by myself, it took about 12 hours in SWAT. From about 12 to 2 it was full of MLG pros that were annihilating everyone, but after that a mix of combat nirvana and everyone else being too tired to care I started destroying everyone single handedly. I think the highlight of the night was getting 38 points and the other team ending up with around 30-40, I'll try to find the match when I'm not on my phone. I kept setting up custom challenges too so I had basically hit the credit cap by the end of the night.

I can't believe we're talking about a perk to pick up grenades off dead bodies in Halo.

Sigh. How the mighty have fallen.

Cause for some reason the casuals flock to Anny. I think I'm like 96% win and 3.5kd overall in the Anny playlists.
Yeah, kids are terrible in the Anni lists. I love going into Anni FFA, slaughtering kids, inviting the worst ones to my party, and going back into Anni FFA, haha. Soooo fun.

I've had the anniversary map pack for about a month and I have yet to play on Breakneck. Kinda disappointed by this.
Have you played Anni BTB?

It's not like you can't pick up default grenades throughout the map. And with faster kill times it probably won't be as noticeable unless Halo 4 pulls an Elevator Retard Zone™ and you end up camping somewhere.

Out of curiosity, is there anything you like about 4? Just seems that every post you make is negative. You by all means have that right to be negative, I was just curious why you stick around if the game looks horrible to you.

Not trying to be confrontational! :)

The inability to pick up scavenged grenades is pretty much outweighed by the fact we can now carry a full CE-styled supply to me.

having 4-8 grenades is way better than being able to pick up more after you used up all 4 in as many seconds.

Despite my eternal complaining about weapon/perk/AA unlocks, I can't wait to earn them spartan points and build some custom loadouts.

For those of you who got to play this week, are there any weapon spawns on map at all? It looks like every weapon is either from your loadout or ordnance drops, and that doesn't make me happy.

Oh man, agreed, keep elevator rooms out of Halo 4. The Sword Base heat map should prove that.

Zoso, I am pretty sure weapons still spawn on the map.

I've seen very little about Halo 4, but most of it is unecessary changes and additions that just copy CoD. "Halo" gameplay was beautiful on its own; better than CoD's when it was done right. It doesn't need all this crap, and it doesn't add to the experience.

I want a Halo game that heralds back to Halo's origins; the most skill-based and fun console FPS on the market. A simple, elegant game that hides incredible depth through predictable, skill-based game mechanics and features. That's what I want, and nothing I've seen shows me thats the direction its going. In fact, everything looks like its going the opposite direction.

I didn't play the game but yeah there are weapon spawns, you can see on some videos folks filmed at E3. Unless I saw it wrong

I don't think I like mechanics that have been in the series since its inception being split off to force the player to choose among them. Doesn't really sit right with me. I know I was championing "separate but equal," but this...

So you want to be taken seriously here?

343 is continuing the tradition of changing things for no reason and making them worse.

Or not?

Understandable. My feelings on everyone comparing it to CoD aside, I think the series is in good hands, and (at least for me) I am willing to give 343 my trust until I play the game.

From what the few HaloGaffers that have played it have said, it still conveys that Halo feeling. I've played a lot of CoD and I have yet to see anything showing the core Halo 4 gameplay (movement, jumps, speed, ect.) turning into a CoD clone. They are just so radically different.

Yeah, some of the systems may be similar, but that's 343 acknowledging that CoD does some base systems well, and those systems can be implemented into a Halo game without ruining the Halo legacy. Halo does need to evolve. I've seen calls for Halo 2 XBLA and it makes me wonder how many people would rather Halo 4 just be a re-skinned 2004 game even when we've been there done that.

Anywho, my two cents and all.

I'm past the point of caring what an online forum thinks of me.

I did the whole million page, in-depth analysis and critiques on forums back when Halo 2 came out and then through Halo 3. It doesn't make any difference, and I'm really just on here to pass the time. I have more faith in my knowledge of what truly makes for a fun, balanced MP game than anyone I know, and I'm certainly going to take shots at developers who make stupid design choices.

They've made that game. How much fun is it to mke a game where you base it tit for tat with the game you made 10 years ago? Just slap on some new textures, lock down those frames and call up MSHQ with the game in hand, right?

Halo needs to change. Every game needs change. You can always love Halo 1. I just don't think anyone should ever expect another Halo 1.

I feel that thinking they were added strictly because of CoD is an unfair assessment. All minor mechanics stand on their own right. Just because it exists in CoD doesn't mean that it can't be in Halo. Games are built on mixing and matching mechanics these days... there are few new mechanics/systems that are added to the gaming world. A grenade indicator, text notifications of things you done, flinching, sprint, etc are all minor mechanics that don't have any heavy tie to the CoD name. These are all mechanics that can show up in any shooter as they are misc mechanics.

Nade spamming was a problem because there were too many nades. Requiring a perk to pick them up is fixing a problem that was a result of poor playlist management and a poor understanding of how nade prevalence and placement could change a map, both of which became significantly more annoying to the community after their power buff in Reach. You're getting rid of the nade spam problem with the wrong solution.

Proper nade placement is one of the most skillful parts of Halo. Banking off walls, predicting enemy encounters, throwing one to weaken the enemy in a hopeless scenario so your teammates have an advantage, switching between stickies and frags depending on the situation, etc. Grenades are extremely rewarding and satisfying.

Oh well.

Don't mean to touch any nerves here, but what weapon combos are you all thinking of using? I think Storm Rifle and Magnum would be interesting.

Also, I heard a few months ago the Magnum still has a shitty clip size, true?

WTF

DMR, and the ammo I'll receive from my victims' fallen bodies, unless that's a perk as well.

I honestly don't know what the correct term for those augmentations. To Waypoint.

Edit: Ah, "upgrades".

I'm fine with them adding things to the game. My point is that, after Halo CE, the one thing they've failed to add is what drove me to love the game in the first place; core gameplay that is well-paced and extremely skillful.

Agree with the bolded. Don't get the "oh well" though. I mean, nades will spawn on the maps. Players will still spawn with 2 nades and will probably have a selection of nades to choose from. This way, the amount of grenades on the map at any one time can be somewhat regulated. I dunno what a better solution would be.

Funny how Halo 2 ad 3 are heralded as being fantastic MLG games. Different strokes I guess.

I was down on the game as well but everything I've seen as of late in conjunction with all the gameplay reports I've read. It seems as though what they've done is an incredible job on expanding on the already rich sandbox. The perks/aa's/etc only seem to be letting players tweak their Spartan to provide them with an avenue that allows them to cater to their playstyle.

No longer can a player complain about AR starts, or uneven battles(atleast in terms of weapons and weapon pickups) because now the choice is in your hands. The only catch is you have to unlock it. So hey, if you want a nice start against your first MP opponents just dig into Spartan Ops first.

I'll also add that the only thing that seems/sounded(after reports and vids) CoD-like is Infinity Slayer and hey, you don't have to play that.

That's because the gaming culture mimics society's culture and we have to hand out participation ribbons in order to be fair. There can't be winners or losers, or people that are naturally better than others. In order to be fair we have to play the game for people so they can have a chance at fun too... after all, it's no fun to lose.

Carbine + Plasma Pistol
Carbine + Storm Rifle
Storm Rifle + Plasma Pistol
BR + something
AR + something

Carbine is back!
And the Storm Rifle seems to be really good at short range. Not to mention looking really nice.

Agreed with this. And I'm not sure how a perk is a solution if it was such a problem. The entire enemy team may have this perk enabled, so is that really the answer?

I wrote an article about that exact thing.

I just wish we were at least given options to make the game play more skillfully; we're given options for everything else.
