Also, all this talk of weather woes is honestly quite amusing to me, too. Today is basically the coolest we've had in months (91F~33C) with only 30% humidity (the lowest in weeks thanks to frequent drizzles that last just long enough to raise the humidity and basically nothing else). Supposed to move up into the high 90's later in the week and stay there for a while.

Still beats the two years I lived in Turkey. Around 80-100% humidity most of the year and most summers would be around the 110s-120s (~43-49C).

Wow. Windows is so weird. So I just reinstalled Halo 2 after my computer went screwy and forced me to re-install. Course since I don't have instillation discs I had to make my install Windows 8. Anyway now Halo 2 works perfectly with Steam. So funny because before on Vista it just didn't want to work with steam at all.

Vista was always kind of wonky with games at times.

I hope they do more than just consolidate. Fewer playlists isn't a true fix if they don't emphasize the key gametypes per playlist. We see that a lot with Reach Objective and BTB. Halo 3 launched with just 11 playlists, but each of them had nonsense like this:

You're right, the playlists and gametypes really need to be completely overhauled. I just figured that went without saying. There's no quick fix here, Reach's playlists are in bad shape and changing 2 or 3 things isn't really going to cut it.

I'd also really love some transparency and justification for changes, but I'm not holding my breath.

I enjoy one bomb. Only if the map is right. Also, why cant we have the arm spot on powerhouse be in the powerhouse. Same with the flag. Just move the rockets somewhere else maybe in the middle of the curved walkway so its between both teams.

Yeah, it's common sense stuff, I had just been waiting for a chance to post that VIP-infested list because I find it hilarious in retrospect.

They need maps that support them to be fun. I thought One Flag Sword Base wasn't horrible, but with the changes they made from Ivory Tower to Reflection, there aren't any really good asymmetric Reach maps. I guess you could count Powerhouse, but they screwed up so badly creating that initial base, it's pretty clear that the flag placement is just a bandaid over a serious problem. One Bomb on Zanzibar or Ivory Tower were fantastic before, but it's obvious there wasn't a focus placed on asymmetric flag/bomb gametypes since 2--just look at how screwed up Last Resort's base was compared to Zanzibar, I have no idea what they were doing there.

Not as they are now. A huge waste of time with an almost always redundant 4 round. As Steely has said many times over, 2 timed rounds with infinite scoring is the way to go. I don't know if that's the best way to set it up, but I'm sure it would be more fun than what we have now.

I guess that all depends... how is it implemented, on what maps, etc.

In CoD my absolute favorite game type is Search and Destroy... in Halo - I've never really cared for one flag... but have enjoyed Assault in the past depending on the map.

Oh man, I love a good game of Search and Destroy. I hate that many matches end up playing like TDM though.

I actually loved 1 Flag on Last Resort in 3. All of the maps and gametypes in Reach for one sided objective feel a bit off.

Yep.
Powerhouse is a great 1 sided objective map IMO.

I thought BG CTF was a staple gametype for any team obj. playlist. But what do I know i've just been playing halo since 2001....
Sorry, but have you played Reach at all, ever? If so you would know why it's a terrible thing that should burn in the deepest of hells, especially with only 5v5.

Explain to me exactly why the greatest halo map and the greatest gametype of all time shouldn't be in an objective playlist?

I would really like to hear this. Without all the gandolf talk.

Blood Gulch doesn't work correctly in Reach because their is no cover from incessant DMR killing. If you put a few rocks throughout the central area it would greatly improve the map. As it stands now, depending on the gametype, one team has a clear advantage due to base/spawn and will usually win greater than 85% of the games based purely on the color of team they were assigned.

To bring back true BG CTF - add a few rocks for individual man cover. Replace plasma launcher with something like Spartan Laser. Put warthogs on 3 minute respawn timer... and always spawn players inside their own base unless enemy is within spawn zone.

Well, you've got Hemorrhage (or Blood Gulch) - A huge, completely open map with no cover anywhere. Then there's the power weapons. People can grab a shotgun 5 feet outside of your base and just sit next to your flag all day and kill anyone who dares enter it. There's also a Sniper which can destroy people anywhere on the map. Even just the DMR can ping people across the map, that's how terrible it is.

And you want to play with 10 people a map that huge and have a nice game of CTF? Yeah, screw that.

You're talking about a game that has the Halo 1 Pistol available via Megalo hooks, and Blood Gulch, but no Halo 1 Gametypes exist on Blood Gulch in matchmaking.

Figure that out.

Even before Reach was announced I pretty much didn't want Coag to come back because of how wide open it was. I'm still pretty much against it ever coming back again. Spirtual successors like Valhalla and Tempest are much better for modern Halo.

So in order to bring back true bg ctf we have to change the layout of the map? I don't understand the logic. I'll admit that the Halo 2 layout they used is pretty bad (the Halo CE layout was more hilly which made progress on the terrain easier).

The plasma launcher needs to change to a rocket i'd say andhaving tanks of any kind really doesn't add to the gameplay.

As for the spawning, I think spawning in the base could really make things worse. Having only two areas to exit makes camping the bases that much easier. Just don't spawn us way out at our teleporter.

I really liked your post though, gets the brain juices flowing!

Are you talking about the HCEA playlists? If so 343i said they didn't want to put a map in a playlist that's supposed to feature the new maps. Or were you talking about something else?

I'm convinced map designers have no clue how competitive games are played... in any FPS currently made. They are specialists who don't fully understand how their builds will be used/abused.

It can't be in the CEA playlists because they

a) didn't include Forge World on the CEA disc, because it would have made too much sense and they insisted on one disc

b) Anniversary disc playlists cannot mark Reach disc maps as optional for some reason, so they can't appear at all

HOWEVER it'd be possible to have Halo 1 gametypes on Blood Gulch (Forge World) elsewhere in matchmaking, because they patched the Halo 1 Pistol hook into every map in the game, which seems currently to be a waste of time as we'll more than likely never see the Halo 1 Pistol on a non-Anni map.
