Halo: Reach |OT5| A Monument to All Our Sins

Letters said:
Wait DMR bloom will be gone from vanilla Reach? Didn't they say they weren't touching that side of the game? Or was that improved Reach gameplay from the vid (no boom, no nukes, damage bleedthrough, nerfed armorlock etc) a separate style of gameplay that will coexist with Classic and Terrible Reach?

They said some more popular aspects may eventually get applied to the game as a whole. I'm thinking we will see something more akin to what we just saw taking the place of core Reach soon enough. And having NeoReach and Classic coexist.

That's a lot. That's also a game to 75 though. Still real good.

Problems with assists:

-Window for getting assist is 5 seconds. That's too short.
-Damage for getting assist is 3 DMR shots, that's too little.
-Enemy A has shields dropped by Teammate A. Enemy A's shields recharge. Teammate B drops Enemy A's shields. Teammate A kills Enemy A right away. Teammate B is not rewarded with an assist.

@Letters

Frankie:Important distinction. It will be playlist dependent. If a change proves universally popular, then obviously it will get universal application. Some folks will definitely still want "normal" REACH behavior and they will have that.

I play Halo with someone else who lives just outside of Salt Lake. I'll be stopping through there on the plane ride back home.

I always tell him that my most distinct memory of coming through Salt Lake on the Greyhound for PAX07 was the painted rock in the middle of the highway.

You mean this one?

That's the only pic I could find. Very nice, I'll wave hello when you fly through. ;)

Hey, you're within stalking distance. ;)

More specifically, I'm in the Sugarhouse area in the Salt Lake valley.

Bountiful for me. Sugarhouse is awesome. :)

Halo Edit: I hope changes prove universally popular. It would be awesome to have them spread across the board. How are they proven to be so though? Consistently high playlist numbers?

Roy and Ogre 2 are the ones that are being vocal against the removal of bloom, but they're also using the logic that removing it is going to remove the skill gap, where as it's way more likely that skill that went towards pacing and controller bloom will transfer over to things like strafe, positioning, etc. It'll make the game much more consistent, which in turn should lead to a bigger skill gap.

I don't think Ogre 2 implied that skill will go from pacing to strafe and positioning. Positioning will always be one of the most important parts to being great at Halo.

He thinks that no bloom will make killing that much easier and faster. One would think a CE god would like faster killing times, but he's of the opinion that you would have to make the hitboxes smaller like in CE.

Roy likes bloom because he thinks it's a skill to know when to spam and when to pace. He pretty much has the best DMR right now. I think he mentioned that bloom sucks online, but that it's fine on LAN.

Very mixed reactions from the pros. Most pros are happy that bloom is gone. I think God Squad minus pistola are in favor of bloom. The community itself loves the update and they have started to make Frankie sigs.

Depends on what other settings they're gonna be able to mess with. I don't think it's that cut and dry.
One would hope that MLG would do everything in it's power to drop any form of luck or chance from the competitive game types. Whatever any of us think about bloom it is undeniably an avenue for luck to play a factor.

Made a few clips from tonight's customs.

This was the triple kill stick I got on the Warthog trying to escape with the flag on Wayont.

A clip of me getting some nice kills escorting my teammate with the flag. The nade that dropped the first two players to one shot was a betrayal nade

This was probably the funniest thing I saw happen from all the games tonight. I go for Rockets as Red player, and 4 Blue players fail to get into the Rocket drop down and all Mass Suicide into the water while I just pick them up pretty easily.

If someone could render the clips it would be greatly appreciated.

Why doesn't MLG have a bloom gametype, and a non-bloom gametype? You could vote for either one.
Well we already have a bloom version. Non bloom versions will be developed. They'll be tested, tweaked and tested again and again. I'm sure they'll leak and then there's gonna be a front page story on what the decision will be. It's tough to tell what the reaction will be once everyone has settled down and played it for themselves. No doubt it will be mixed though. Maybe they'll finish out the season with bloom and remove it for next season. Who knows?

Where are they saying they are against removing bloom?

Nice. I'm sitting/working in a building just across the street from the National Weather Center as I type this. Are you taking classes at OU or just working?

Damnation clip is divided into 3 sections from 3 different games.
Part 1. Normal Gameplay
Part 2. No Bloom.
Part 3. DMR is a 4 shot kill. Starts at 5 minutes.

hKpDE.png

Thats the last kill of the game, its a headshot with shields still up.

Its more obvious at 5:25.

Im just wonderin how theyre gonna nerf the dmr. If they keep it the way it is now with no bloom, thats overpowered.

Yeah, we don't have enough information at this point, but in the video the DMR fires exactly the same, just without the bloom. If that is the case, then people will go back to strafing.

From a kill-time perspective, I think the 5 shot DMR (at full speed) is equivalent to the Halo 2 BR. The Halo 3 BR was longer.

At 5:20 he has 13 shots.

At 5:28, post kill, he is down to 10. That would have been a 3 shot. Alternatively, his health was already low and there was bleed through.

Right but the grenade did some damage too. edit: the Bleed through headshot is the important part, and you mentioned that. got it.

The best evidence that it is still a 5 shot kill is at 4:50.
no thats a different game than the third section. If you look at the game time at 5:00, it changes. different game, different settings. You'll be able to tweak the power of the DMR
Booshka said:
That's how the Pistol in CE worked. The third shot would bleed through shields and get a headshot as well. I think it will play better if the DMR has bleed through, less one shot's getting away because they gained a sliver of shield back leading to the next shot just dropping shields back down. This way, that should end up being a kill.
well according to the video, you'll be able to toggle bleed through headshots on or off.

Right but the grenade did some damage too, silly. the important thing is that the headshot with shields up got the kill. It doesn't work like that now.

That would be pretty awesome for MLG also. I love the grenade bounce at 5:15 and the Armor Lock Overkill at 4:25

I went to bed happy, dreaming of a bloomless Halo Reach. I wake up thinking "Was it all a dream? Surely they can't do that without forcing us to download all the .map files again?!"

But happily, it was no dream. 343 have come through in fine style. So many people are going to be playing Halo again on my Friends List. I've never been more excited for a game I already own.

Roll on next Friday, I look forward to seeing what's what.

Thanks for letting me host customs. Without the DLC I didn't have much to work with, but my goal was to keep it focused on competitive gunplay. Vehicles usually just lead to frustration, mini-games get boring, I tried to keep it sprint only when I remembered, and I didn't want many forge world maps either.

I had a lot of fun, didn't rage once. lol

Can someone render this clip? My favorite moment of the night.

edit: thanks wulff!

Patience young grasshopper.

Late to the party and I havent caught up on the whole thread but so far the TU looks amazing. I just hope 343 release a whole bunch of variations on game settings for us.

As for AR without bloom, Fyrewulff you so crazy, automatic weapons arent ever going to fire like laser beams, bloom has always been on them and its been fine simply because its normal. Putting bloom on precision weapons doesnt make sense though.

Pretty excited for the TU, need details on the classic++ playlist noaw!

I am a little worried about balance, hopefully a good RoF is introduced. No bloom and no fire limit would be pretty spammy. No bloom a decent RoF and a 4 shot kill would be the best thing eva! :p

It's already a laser beam in these hands.

I want to take it to the next level. I want it to the ION CANNON of Reach.

Shit, now I want to go play Command and Conquer

Honestly. I wouldnt be suprised if the magicians at 343 have implimented a ION CANNON into Reach as part of the TU. Beli343

Also reading through the thread, someone mentioned bullet spread.... lol that would be worse than bloom on a weapon that only fires 1 bullet at a time. :p

I wouldnt want recoil either, we need proper dmr starts. Where the dmr is actually fun to use. :p The beauty of this TU is 343 can literally create hundreds of different permutations where im sure everyone will find something they enjoy (I hope!) I just think the playlist managment side is going to be a nightmare.

LMAO, if the DMR is a no-bloom 4-shot kill, they've basically broken the game.

I agree with the MLG guy that said it's a skill to know when and where to take the DMR out of it's mid-range element with timed shots and revert to spamming, and when to use positioning and awareness to control the battle and take the luck of spamming out of the equation.

I like the player choice that bloom provides, in that regard.

But hell, I played Halo without bloom for 10 years, so I don't think going back should be too much of an issue.
