Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Yes yes and yes. And seriously, let's scrutinize every detail of one picture of the assault rifle.

Don't release something early if you don't want to hear the scrutiny and criticisms that go along with it. Simple as that.

There's plenty of room for people to make comments about the changes.

That being said, I really can't wait to see this game finally in motion in first person tomorrow.

Those grunts don't look like the Grunts in the GI issue.

That grunt pic I must admit looks JUST like Halo 3. The others look better, but that grunt one scares me.

I really hope we don't get fucked on this.

There are different Grunt variants. But yes, that pic just screams Halo 3 to me.

This is the one thing I don't understand. I was under the impression that CE's FOV was 70°.
I may be off base here, but the radar seems to indicate 90° FOV.

Why are people bothered about the removal of the compass? If anyone pretends that they ever used the compass on the AR to navigate then that is the worlds most audacious lie.
Not bothered, just making an observation.

I never use it in-game but it came in handy for walkthroughs, "head west to the end of the corridor, there will be 2 jackals guarding the door", and for navigating while exploring outside of the level.

Christ, should have went with a MP vidoc instead of releasing two screens, now I have to listen to idiots complain about graphics.

Split-screen am confirmed:
“Halo: Reach,” developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie, is the blockbuster prequel to the best-selling Xbox franchise of all time. It represents the culmination of Bungie’s 10 years of experience crafting groundbreaking “Halo” games that have raised expectations for what can be achieved in a video game.

In “Halo: Reach,” players experience the fateful moments that forged the “Halo” legend. It’s the story of Noble Team, a squad of heroic Spartan soldiers, and their final stand on planet Reach, humanity’s last line of defense between the terrifying Covenant and Earth. This darker story is echoed by grittier visuals amid a backdrop of massive, awe-inspiring environments. Characters, enemies and environments are rendered in amazing detail by an all-new engine designed to deliver epic-scale encounters against the cunning and ruthless Covenant.

Once the campaign is over, the battle continues online with an unparalleled multiplayer experience that expands on the award-winning suite of features that helped define the Xbox LIVE experience.

The “Halo: Reach” multiplayer beta, on track to be the largest beta program of its kind on any console, is expected to see millions of participants when it begins May 3. Players can access the multiplayer beta on Xbox LIVE through the “Halo 3: ODST” disc.2

Features: Top features include the following:

• Meet Noble Team. For the first time, players will fight alongside a squad of iconic Spartan soldiers, each with deadly talents as unique as their individual personalities and customized gear.
• An intense campaign. Live the events that set the stage for the “Halo” trilogy as the UNSC and Covenant clash at the height of their military power. New weapons and abilities complement the familiar “Halo” arsenal for the largest-scale battles ever witnessed in the “Halo” universe. Fiercely cunning artificial intelligence (AI) adds depth and complexity to each encounter, helping make every play-through a unique and epic experience.
• Stunning technical advancements. “Halo: Reach” takes a massive leap forward through all-new engine technology designed to take full advantage of next-generation graphics, audio, special effects, AI and animation while continuing to expand on the campaign, cooperative and multiplayer sandbox in a way that only “Halo” can.
• The definitive multiplayer experience. “Halo: Reach” builds on the success of its predecessors, setting a new standard for competitive gameplay, customization, variety and community integration.1
• Unparalleled feature suite. “Halo: Reach” expands on the industry-leading suite of features found in “Halo 3,” including four-player cooperative campaign play, split-screen support, saved films, screenshots and exciting new surprises that have yet to be revealed.

In CE? I was just playing it about an hour ago and it didn't look like 90° to me.
I may not be a walking, talking protractor but I know a right angle when I see one.
Either that or my eyes are deceiving me.

Visuals in the stills don't look like anything too hot or much of a leap from H3, but I think the animation will be the most important aspect of the visuals. If the animation is improved as they have been saying the whole thing could be pretty slick looking in motion.

The other pics DO look a step above, but that grunt one, urgh.

I'm sure it looks better in motion. But I think Bungie needs to consider some filters, and more blur. There's nothign wrong with a bit of blur in games. It gives things a softer, more natural or 'real' look.

Trying to go super sharp and super high res sometimes gives off a weird look. Even Halo 3 would have benefitted a lot from a simple overall blur.

Which would actually be useful if Bungie made it a lot easier to get outside the levels. :p

Anyway, can't wait for the MP ViDoc tomorrow and the Reach beta.

It's opinion but it has basis in fact. It just looks like Halo 3 in that screen in particular, and I think denying it is being unreasonable.

That said, it's not the technical fidelity or quality I'm complaining about, it's the style.

Yea people bitch about graphics and other people bitch about the bitchers, but I think visual style is a huge indicator of what is going to change in the new game. Making the game look like Halo 3 suggests to me it will play like it. While I have nothing against the gameplay, I was hoping for something new, something different.

That said, the animation this time around I am pumped for. Haven't seen good animation coming from Bungie since Halo CE.

It wouldn't have made a difference.

Well, I would have had more fun watching that than reading this stuff.

I don't think the Vidoc is going to be MP either, Ellis doesn't state it, only says that their getting a run through of a MP map, which makes it sound like they're flying around in forge mode just showing the map. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

No it is 100% opinion. I think it looks much better than Halo 3, but what do I know, I have only been playing Halo 3 weekly since September 2007, it would be unreasonable for me to think my opinion has any chunk of factual worth whatsoever.

That one Grunt screen DOES look bad though. Surely you can admit that.

The others to me look hot, and a genuine step above Halo 3. But that grunt pic to me looks like a Halo 3 pic was put in there by mistake.

Very sorry, i meant in this pic
Reach-m10_1stperson.jpg

it looks like exactly 90° of the radar is lighter, possibly indicating you are viewing that portion of the radar in your HUD.

Wuts new guys?

Elites only in MP, DMR was found OPed and finally cut from the final release, splitscreen only, you can't play XBL without at least one guest signed in. Nothing else so far.

Ah, I see. I agree, that is clearly 90°.
The radar is divided into 8 equal sectors, two of which make up the FOV indicator.

I meant that I do not understand the "70° FOV sucks, why can't it go back to the way CE did it?" arguement when CE was also 70°.
Maybe they all get confused because they've got a 4:3 game being stretched on their lovely wide screens.
For me, CE feels like I have only the front half of my helmet and there's a guy behind me trying to force my face through it.
