Visually, it's the same engine that you're playing in - it's not a video, or CG as some are suggesting.

There's footage directly captured from gameplay and then there are in engine cutscenes/cg/fmv/whatever the fuck you want to call it. To what degree it has been touched up or not doesn't matter. It gives us an idea of what the game will look like, but it is not what the game will look like when you're playing. That's not a criticism of the graphics or the trailer so there's no need to take offense like a lot of you seem to be doing.

Those all looked like ODST's in that trailer.

Wasn't this game supposed to feature a Spartan cast or something ?

Well seeing that you can specifically make out various Mjolnir armor pieces, it's not hard to tell they are Spartans. You can see the EVO helmet and the EOD shoulders.

If you knew any devs, you would know that a lot of them don't have the time or desire to see or play other games. The last thing I want to do is play games or read about them, when I've been working on what for three years, every fucking day of my life. My buddy at Epic is like that.

We play a TON of games. Video games are awesome.

Now this is different to what you were portraying earlier - here you're actually acknowledging that it's using the game's engine instead of being intangible and grouping it with CG... and really, there was no huge jump with the models and textures in Halo 3 or ODST from what I remember as well, aside from the bloom and AA...

You're correct, these days the gap between cutscenes using in-game assets and actual in-game is not as broad as it used to be, but I prefer to air on the side of caution. I don't really expect the final game to look like that. Geometry and textures will probably be the same but I don't hold out hope for them having so many effects. Even a game like Uncharted 2, which by all accounts looks phenomenal, still took the in-game assets, threw a bunch of extra effects into them and pre-recorded it for most of the game's cutscenes. There is a noticeable disparity (the cutscenes blow the "actual" game away).

They did not look like they were wearing Mjolnir mk. IV armor to me.

So the 6th guy is a ODST? Take a look at his hands in the beginning of the trailer. They arn't armored. I don't know if these guys are spartans.

Isn't it very clear that they're all Spartans? I mean, since they're all in MJOLNIR armor?

Did you see the Trailer in HD? How the hell could you not tell it's a new engine. It looked better than any 360 game out there.

Edit: Still wish the trailer showed more. It was pretty much a "here's the cast" video.
Or almost like a snippet of a cinematic early in the game, giving a sneak-peak at the new engine and cast. Totally unexpected, I know.

i find it sorta funny that it's the year 2552, and the human race is still using VTOLs from the late 1990s

and I -really- dislike how they've portrayed the military since halo 2. bungie... never try to copy real life, please. i don't need the cheesy one liners, the awkward interactions, or the retarded stuff like "oorah!"

it's like... the game is just full of "wouldn't it be cool if..." things instead of what feels right

I just hope they don't fuck up the single player gameplay like they did with Halo 3's multiplayer - what a travesty that was.

btw: engine is a lot better - better use of specularity, lighting and particles... particles is what was missing from halo 2 and 3.

but still... this game feels like another half assed awkward showing like Halo: ODST - I don't feel any excitement from that trailer, and that just gave me a weird desert storm vibe. oh and please stop with the useless fan servicing garbage "they're missing in action" ffs it worked with "betcha can't stick it" - you don't need one every single trailer

My statement was that absolute ;)

I know that you guys at Bungie play other games. My friend from Epic gives me the impression that he, and a lot of his colleagues don't have time, energy or desire to play games though. Same with a buddy of mine who used to work for EA and another who worked for Treyarch. Kind of depressing :( I guess it depends on where and who you work for. Glad Bungie seems to have a friendly and care free work environment.

EDIT

Oh shit. Just remembered. You better spill some beans God damnit. Fuck your NDA. TELL US!!!

Which one isn't? There's only one I see that even looks close to being an ODST ("small" guy in the middle at 1:29). Of course, I could be wrong, but it looks like all in this group all share the same massive angular chest as the Master Chief.

They look bulkier than ODSTs at first glance.

If you want a nerdier outlook, Spartans are much bigger than soldiers, so the fact that all are comparatively similar in size since at least a handful of them are Spartans for sure shows that they're all Spartans.

To someone who knows what a MJRNELSON armor is maybe. I'm not that big into the Halo lore, my bad.

I like the look of the new sniper (looks like the built-in tripod is stowed). Seems more "rustic" than our previous ones. Love the fact that he's hand-loading his mag box. Can definitely tell Bungie is keeping with the various roles/styles of your comrades.

Fucking badass. The custom Spartan suits look awesome, love the skull paint guy & robot arm chick. Engine looks incredible too, the lighting is gorgeous. Art direction look grittier, and as always, epic. Plus Elites. Elites!

Now give us some actual game info, PLEASE!

Sure, people DO copy other people's ideas. But sometimes, if you see similar things in games, it's a possibility that it's a coincidence.
You're taking my statement to literally, which is partially my fault.

My comment was mainly to point out my disappointment that Bungie seems to be turning the spartans into the fist-bumping bros from Army of Two. Spartants have traditionally been portrayed as professionals in the books and games (ie. not the type of people that would modify they're standard armour by painting a skull on it).

I think it should be clear by now that this game will have a shadowrun style class system. In the books the spartans were individuals. To make the characters individuals in this they will have different stat ratings which make them more effective at certain tasks and the use of certain weapons.

The way they look isn't necessarily indicative of the way they behave. Compare this trailer to a trailer for Army of Two, which one seems more mature? I mean mature as in classy, not gratuitous and vulgar. The dialogue here is still typical gung-ho American bravado, but it's not so over the top as to turn it into self parody.

Really want an HD version. The lighting, modeling and animation look fantastic, but I want to get a better feel for the visual fidelity. When so many people storm in saying it's CG, you know they dun gud.

The dialogue, it bears repeating, was terrible.

"I've read your file. Even the parts I wasn't supposed to."

I know. My bad. It's late and I'm cranky. Shitty "award" show put me in a sour mood tonight.

Do I even need to go find an ODST picture for comparison?

Been a while since I read the books, but I seem to remember them mentioning the spartans modding their armor all the time. I agree the skull on the helmet is a bit much though.

I recall they had 2 months to piece this cinematic together. You'd think a person trying to come up with a few lines in 2 months could do a little better than that! Yet I have this feeling that it's all very purposefully done. Trying to get that 80s action movie feel. Sort of like what Gear of War does, but with a better story.

You're right, it's not on the same level as Army of Two, but any step in that direction is a departure from what has been traditionally done in the Halo universe.

The Spartans never die line was just thrown in there and was almost as cheesy as the recent Halo Legends stuff (which was awesome, but also cheesy). :S I really hope it's reworked and not like that throughout the game.

It's a huge step up for Bungie, but it's just started to compete against the first Mass Effect. And there is absolutely no reason that an FPS game should not be able to churn out better faces than an open world RPG like Mass Effect.

Wasn't it actually "I've read your fire, even the parts ONI says I wasn't supposed to."? Because that's much better, and even touches on Halo lore of ONI holding back a lot from ground troops, even Spartans.

There's a gross, almost plastic-like sheen on her face. Maybe you can excuse it as being sweat, but it looks unnatural. Her face overall is much better than anything else in the series (compared to Dare and her Mt. Everest chin especially), but there's something weird about it.

Watching the better quality version posted a little bit ago makes it more impressive. Looks much better than H3.

He said "Even the parts ONI didn't want me to", which I liked. Hopefully hinting at ONI having a big part in the story of this game.

My only issue is that she looks too healthy. Spartans are supposed to be pale and sickly looking due to their faces almost never being exposed to the sun.
