Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Also, this was the article that Luke Plunkett was referencing: http://www.industrygamers.com/news/halo-reach-should-make-a-halo-movie-more-likely-says-bungie/

Quote from that article:

Just wanted to add that I think Neil Blomkamp would have been perfect for a Halo movie. If you have seen Halo 3: Landfall, or even District 9, then you would know what I am talking about.

And I still stand by my claim that whilst Landfall was great and D9 was too, he is absolutely not the right director for a HALO movie.

A spin-off does not need to be a game. They meant Legends I think.

Well it doesn't make much sense either. How could have Legends diluted the interest for a brand new Halo game?

And judging by sales figures, that said interest never went down, keeping in mind that ODST was sold at full retail price, in NA.

But it is ok, september 2010 npd will blow all this away for good xD

The next round of multiplayer coverage should surface tomorrow morning courtesy of some media partner websites and then Urk will spin his own special version of it for Friday on Bnet.

Spunk spunk. So tomorrow is Thursday right. I get confused with the timezones. So sometime this afternoon / evening GMT right?

This might sound strange, but I don't think the level of realism he ascribes to fits what Halo has been. I found his Halo related shorts almost unrecognizable, with a grit more suited to the world of Gears of War (though not its absurd story). I'd expect something more grandiose from a Halo movie.

In short, give it to Micheal Bay. I mean, the Rock was halfway there already.

Niel Blomkamp pulled off some awesome, awesome stuff with his short Halo videos.

Seeing everything I know and love about Halo unfolding in a movie would be amazing. I just hope whoever they get is a legit fan of the games and its universe.

If we were back in '99 I'd agree.

But now Bay is somewhat different.

Halo should be given to James Cameron and his 3d technology. But - and this is mandatory - Bungie must be in charge, so to avoid hyppie covenant and scientology all over the place :lol

Please don't. :(

And I think Blomkamp was that. It's really too bad. :(

"I worked on it for five months…I put a lot of sort of sweat and blood into Halo. Creatively, it's very compelling. I love it. But, when you work that long on something and you have it bottom out and collapse… I mean, I got District 9 out of it, I think I'm probably better off because it's more of a personal film. But yeah, I love the world of Halo. I don't think I would go back there."

So, concerning the 4th multi level, are all of these thought to be part of the first 3?

I could easily see 1 and 2 being Powerhouse and 3 and 4 being Sword Base, but I'm not sure. That 4th level's got to be in the somewhere, right?

His first two answers pretty much solidify why he would have been perfect for a Halo movie.

Neill Blomkamp: From a purely game playing perspective I am a massive fan of the games, but more importantly, i'm a massive fan of the world and universe of Halo, the science fiction world that the games take place inside of.

Neill Blomkamp: From a playing perspective I like both. But from a conceptual and story perspective I prefer Halo 1.

From this image, we learn what the inside of Powerhouse looks like:

It says "Powerhouse level 2" as the callout.

But this looks very different from the first two pics I posted above.

I think pic 2 is Powerhouse because the building grime and sky color look right.

But might the first be from the 4th level, an underground area full of tiled hallways?

Greetings halo GAF.

I was wondering if it had been revealed that the reach beta had LAN support? I'm assuming it would just be a case of creating private party and starting up a game, but then it hit me that would each console require an active net connection not to necissarily push data through, but to do some kind of verifaction..

Neill would be best, but if you're going to suggest Bay, then you may as well try a Spielberg/Hanks collaboration. It could be Saving Private Ryan in space.

I'm not convinced Blomkamp could succeed at the kind of grandiose scale and cinematography Halo would require. He did great with the documentary style of District 9, but the two are very different.

Bay's been on a poorly-written film tangent lately. I'm not sure if his directing has suffered as a result.

Same for Spielberg.

Let's just get Kubrick back from directors' heaven.

Why do you want the film to turn out badly?

LOL, I would not give Kubrick Halo. I'd rather give it to Guillermo Del Toro, but he's busy with The Hobbit (Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy II show me the kind of stuff I would want in Halo).

Do not want. xD

Let's all be honest: a Halo movie would be great, but the risks are so huge, that in the end I'm really happy not to have one.

I wouldnt mind Michael Bay Halo. If he was not incharge of he writing.

You cannot deny his films have great action. Badboys 2 had great OTT highway chases.

I would be for that. A videogame movie that's actually taken seriously? Wow.

Also I would be for a David Lynch version as well. I liked his Dune the most.

IIRC the Halo 3 Beta was LIVE only, in any case we haven't heard of those details yet. Connecting a bunch of 360s to the same Router to play online shouldn't be a problem since, I've done this with Halo 3 a few times and it always works great.

You are specifically worried that if you connect multiple 360s and try to run the Reach beta on all of them at once it will not work, correct?

That's the point. Plus, Kubrick revolutionized sci-fi as a genre, after all. And has proven many times of being able to capture the core of every genre.

But he's gone ç_ç. I was referring to him as an example of the approach I'd like to see.

The beta will be live only for obvious reasons: they need feedback data. So if you're planning to play an offline lan, no way.

If you connect all the 360s to live and have a copy of ODST for each one, and live accounts, no problem, I guess.

It was real disappointing to read about Blomkamp's situation with the Halo movie, the shorts were brilliant, and it had a look that could suit Halo on the big screen, especially since it was taken seriously and had a different look than anything else in years...

Looking forward to that new info today, I've been curious to see how that credit info worked myself!

Ditto. I end up copy-pasting a lot of posts from here to Eurogamer.

I try to go to the source on the posts and get the information from there as opposed to ripping off posts from people here you bastard!

In other sadder news, I'm probably not going to be able to have the time off for the beta that I was supposed to have; a co-worker had a very good legitimate reason for needing the time off so I freed it up for her, so I'm basically working about every day for a good while starting around the 4th of May (crunch time for us) so that's awesome. I've got no shot of getting into F&F so I plan on living vicariously through you.

I think they are announcing special Reach handcuffs and shock collar. Handcuffs for the Xbox so you CAN'T GET AWAY until you get your league assignment, and the shock collar to give you a few volts every hour you aren't playing Reach, just as a reminder that you have it. What invests a player more than negative reinforcement?

Totally agree. District 9 was a lot smarter than I ever thought it would be, and the real life/CGI integration was beyond that of a lot of movies that I've seen recently. Blomkamp could pull it off no doubt; the real find would be an art director/production designer that could pull off the color scheme without having it translate to the screen terribly. Maybe they could steal the Avatar folks.

I copy ManCannon/urk posts, but I redirect people to shacknews or wherever so those sites can get the hits.

Also, you're implying I'll get into F&F? I barely post here, and I never finished the ~7k article about ODST that was meant to be my ticket to ride.

I do plan on playing the shit out of the beta, though. I gave up videogames and grain alcohol (i.e. everything except wine) for Lent, and I've ended up missing videogames a lot more. I bet you play Bad Company 2, right? I have not played Bad Company 2.

So we're supposed to be expecting today's news in the AM hours, right (most likely based on the Pacific timezone)? This gonna feel like a slow day with me all hyped to get on a plane tomorrow for PAX.

If only BFBC2 was the only recent game I hadn't played.. Pokémon and Halo are good for my wallet though, lots of gaming time for little cash :lol

I don't know why I'd get in the F&F though. I've spent my three years of high school evangelizing the French to Halo (a dozen consoles/games sold :D) but haven't contributed much online, unless you count the dozen hundred posts here, and in the past at HBO / Optimatch.

When will the F&F start anyways? If it's only the weekend before than I'll live with not getting in :lol
But in the extremely unlikely event that I do get in, then it needs to start NOW! :lol

Speaking of friends and family: A friend of mine was sent the email on B.net for the Halo 3 F&F. Only problem was, he didn't know he'd been sent it, so he was there on the night playing crackdown with the rest of my friends list waiting for the Beta to unlock. The next day he signs into B.net and sees the invitation on there and he nearly broke his fist with rage :lol

I've never given somebody so much stick for something before or since. Poor guy...

COME ON mysterious website hit submit already!! I just came back from a meeting expecting the news to drop. "AM" is over in 2 hours and 20 minutes, although I'm sure Bungie relates everything to west coast time. I really wish shacknews had dibs on all these announcements because the quality of journalism and questions asked were top notch last week.

After reading the article and watching the video, the player investment system sounds awesome. Daily Challenges should be fun as well.

In Modern Warfare 2, as a player levels up, they unlock new abilities, new weapons and other features that fundamentally change the gameplay. Someone who is level one in Modern Warfare 2 can not equally square away against someone nearing the level cap. Bungie is being mindful to avoid that type of player inequality in Halo: Reach.
Thank. God.

Challenges sounds awesome. And Commendations remind me a lot of RSV2's A.C.E.S. system, except better implemented. That game also mixed SP and MP pretty well.

Is this gonna be a two-part reveal like last week, or is the next thing the BWU? Can't remember..

I understand and I know it's a pretty smart thing to do, but why would I spend credits to customize my spartan? Why would I care if I get this squarish shoulder pad or that roundish shoulder pad?

Edit : What I mean is, everone's always gonna wear the most expensive stuff anyway, to prove their "elite-ness".

IMO, they should have kept this with Achievements.

i wouldnt bother watching the gt4v video. the 'journalists' are just acting purely as mouthpieces and don't really add anything to it. just stick to the text brahs.

You're gaining credits even if you don't want to use them.

So, while you're playing, you get credits. Chances are you see a helmet you like. So you can buy it too.

It's just the same as with achievements. But far more flexible and less frustrating for lazy/bad players.

Or simply for occasional players. It's a smart move.

Plus, it will get Reach MP more longevity, given that challenges can be added/updated constantly (unlike achievements).
