Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Nobody's hating here. I was just trying to express my dissapointment with how bungie manages their hype, the game looks a lot better than halo 3, especially the models which are some of the best in the industry. It's just that bungie hyped me up expecting something truly groundbreaking, with that in mind I was dissapointed with the new screens. The environment have some really sterile texture work, the lighting is flat and the special effects like explosions etc. seem outdated. I can't judge how the game is going to play through screenshots, the only thing we CAN judge is how the game is going to look, in that regard i feel letdown.

It's fucking MULTIPLAYER

Edit: Just finished watching. That was insanely great. Chopper Surprise was awesome and the synchronized splatter early on (two choppers splatter at once) almost looked staged it was so cool. Man, I am not very good with the Chopper... Also, the music was great :lol

Hey 343i, those memory lane videos on Waypoint are fucking awesome. I think it was Voc narrating, but whoever it was gave a great goodbye to an old friend, great job.

I wonder what Bungie is testing with their netcode if it's only 3v3.
I have a feeling they will be have fake AI and other singleplayer stuff running invisible in the background. I mean, the SP stuff wouldn't actually be there cloaked, just the equivalent amount of data put into fake network packets being sent between our connections, to test the campaign netcode while we play multiplayer. Clever if so.

I'm trying to think of how Bungie hyped you up to think you were getting the best game ever. We've seen like 3 ViDocs and then these screens that are released every week or so. You've had an accurate representation of what the game is going to look like for the past few months.

Testing for 6 player Co-Op? :D

I'm thinking a Firefight test, myself. Pretty sure they already confirmed 4-player campaign co-op.

Think of the variables going on - six players, teams, weapon drops (literally), destroying objectives - and how they could come into play in Firefight. It makes my heart go pitter-pat, pitter-pat.

If Letters is right, and I hope he is, it's more likely a test for Campaign Co-Op/Firefight to use the conventional multiplayer netcode (host/client, with regular old latency, as opposed to the existing sychronization with slow-mo).

Bravo sir. Thanks for betraying me you jerk(@9:12)! Last two seconds of the clip are my favorite btw.

So everyone freaks out about 3 Plots now? We've known this since the multiplayer trailer!

I lol'd when he splattered you.

Also, screens look awesome, game modes sound awesome, can't believe we're arguing about graphics again, Halo=gameplay, when will you outsiders learn?

Speaking of Firefight, I'm surprised we didn't get any info about it in this article. Could that be something Bungie is just saving for the full release?

GhaleonEB I'm not sure how you'd restrict access to parts of a map that has jetpacks and Banshees on it (unless they were small indoors sections).[/QUOTE said:
The red blocked off areas in the MP trailer during the Invasion parts are a good indication. You get a really clear shot of it when you see the warthog going up the hill. We will find out soon enough!

Has there been any word on whether Bungie will bring back that feature from the Halo 3 Beta where you could save a film after the game ended? I missed that feature.

You're a few months late. We were all complaining about the graphics back when the Game Informer pictures surfaced through EBGames... Then we saw the ViDoc and jumped for joy. I honestly dont care how the multiplayer looks... I AM a graphics whore. Although i dont care how the multiplayer looks, i still want the campaign to look phenominal and it seems to be looking that way.

I know how you feel... But go back to the ViDoc and look at the EARLY BUILD of the campaign and you will feel much better. Particularly the FPS part shooting at the grunt in the small building.

Agreed. What does it matter how great the game looks if the gameplay is lame? I'm looking at you, Killzone 2, and your tank-like aiming. >_>

I imagine that's the case, yes. Along with whatever Forge has morphed into, and other features that may have been added. As huge as the MP component is clearly going to be, it's just the tip of the iceberg. Good lord Reach is going to be a beast.

Que?

Edit: I didn't pick up on the colors since I'm r/g colorblind, but I think I see what you're saying. I never noticed the clearly marked off area the Elites are running toward, and how there seems to be a barrier over the hanger door next to it.

When they show the Spartans vs. Elites part, as the Warthog drives up the hill, you can see a passageway that looks blocked off by a transparent red wall.
Gotcha. And some kind of objective next to it, that might be the way to open that area up. Curse my eyes, I had to stare at that screen and squint for a good 30 seconds to pick it up.

Heck, there's even a Slayer Pro variant, where your only ability is Sprint, you don't have a motion tracker, and you start with either a Designated Marksman Rifle or a Needle Rifle.

Yeah, I started thinking the same thing. Maybe they whipped up this gametype just to mask what they really wanted to test, but it turned out to be awesome enough to want to include in the final game. Holy shit, that's an assload of default gametypes. Love it.

Wow. Probably the most features I've ever seen in a game, period.

Not to be rude or anything, but what exactly is so exciting about that piece news? They didn't say Slayer Pro will be given its own playlist, just that the variant is there. Were you expecting Bungie not to include a similar variant to Team BRs?

Forgot to mention my thoughts on Headhunter and Stockpile. Both sound really interesting and fun; can't wait to try them out.

Yeah, it's funny that around this time in Halo 3's reveal cycle, we were learning about brand new stuff like theater and forge. Now they are the features we know the least about for how they are changing/improving in Reach.

That 1up preview has me super hyped! I'm a little rusty in the Halo realm due to military shooters, but I'm anxious to jump back in with the beta.

I knew there was going to be some hardcore gametypes out there but I am more surprised and excited that Slayer Pro will not have radar and that everyone will share the same armor ability. Also, it may not have a playlist in the beta, but there have been hardcore playlists with similar settings in both Halo 2 and 3 and I think we can expect the same in Reach.

And that's just the topline features; add in file sharing, screenshots, the custom variants, b.net integration and stat tracking. It's bordering on absurd.

I said this once before, but summing up the content in the Beta is approaching the amount of stuff in the Halo 3 original OP; I'm working on all sorts of different formatting approaches to keep the content managable and readable. And we still haven't seen if file sharing and theater are in the beta.

Slayer Pro is probably going to be the 'hardcore' variant until MLG gets their game settings defined, similar to Halo 3. I'm guessing it will show up in The Arena and FFA in the Beta test.

Which means the objectives - Generator Defense and Invasion aside - will all be in the Grab Bag playlist. I think I'll be spending most of my time in there, and Invasion.

So 4 playlists in the Beta, right?

Arena
Invasion
Grab Bag
Generator Defense

or am I missing something? That sounds fantastic since the population per playlist will be HUGE.

Not a Jellyfish

but I am a sheep
Aight I will be on for H2 in the next half hour and will be on the day. Send party invites. :D

Edit: Stockpile sounds great, mixing territories and CTF is a great idea. I won't veto territories and land grab every time now. :D

Five - Free-For-All is in there as well. Sounds like they'll be rolled out over time. If I had to guess, from their names and the gametypes listed so far:

Arena: Team Slayer and variants (Slayer Pro)

Invasion & Generator Defense are self-explanatory

Free-for-All: Slayer and variants, Headhunter, King of the Hill. No mention of Oddball yet.

Grab Bag: Objectives & Slayer. Team Headhunter, CTF, 1-Flag, Stockpile, King of the Hill, Territories, Three-Plots, Slayer variants.

Longsword weapon drops? Seriously, Bungie stop with adding so much win. I can't take it any more. :lol

Headhunter sounds fun, nothing really surprising about this mode but it sounds like it should be fun to play with a team. Stockpile is a lot more interesting with objective zones and multiple flags, sounds a bit zany.

I know we know nothing about what is going on behind the scenes with Network Test 1 / Generator Defence but it sounds awesome, almost too awesome if a little under populated with just 3 on 3. Suppose it remains to be seen how it plays out and Ghaleon's theories about what could be testing in the background is enough to make any sane fan giddy.

Looking forward to the Invasion and Boneyard reveal. Very nice early present this earlier feature was this week, guess it should help folks with Halo 2's demise today.

Hm, so something like this (all my speculation, of course):

Free for All (6-8 players; Spartans)
Slayer
Slayer Pro
Headhunter
Crazy King

Maps: Powerhouse, SwordBase

Arena (4v4; Spartans vs Spartans)
Team Slayer
Team Slayer Pro

Maps: Powerhouse, SwordBase

Invasion (6v6; Spartans vs Elites)
Invasion
Invasion Slayer

Maps: Boneyard

Grab Bag (4v4? 5v5? Spartans vs Spartans)
Team Slayer
Team Slayer Pro
Team Headhunter
Stockpile
CTF
King of the Hill
3 Plots

Maps: Powerhouse, SwordBase

Network Test 1 (3v3; Spartans vs Elites)
Generator Defense

Maps: Overlook

I think they mentioned something about being able to do online banking and bill pay. CE will come with a complete kit for setting up drip feeding. Legendary will come with colostomy bag.

Yes. He's listing the different gametypes under each playlist. So it's possible (likely) that the Arena playlist will have a couple different Slayer variants in it.

At least Slayer Pro is back. Stale seeing simple Slayer and Slayer X weapon. Loadouts and AA change this up though, so it is interesting.

And there you have it: the new multiplayer modes for Halo Reach that you can play for yourself during the beta. For you traditionalists, there are modes and variants such as Slayer, King of the Hill, one-flag CTF, and three-plot Territories (a purposeful return to Halo 2-style Territories). Heck, there's even a Slayer Pro variant, where your only ability is Sprint, you don't have a motion tracker, and you start with either a Designated Marksman Rifle or a Needle Rifle.
3 Plots, Slayer Pro, indeed awesome.

Kotaku Australia confirmed the Reach Beta Playtest they did this morning and are taking questions for answering next week.

This morning I played the Halo Reach multiplayer beta. Well, bits of it, anyway. I’d like to hear your questions about what I saw.

Sadly, I cannot reveal any info just yet. At this stage, all I can really tell you is that I’ve played it. You’ll have to wait until next week for more details.

However, I would like to hear what you want to know about the beta. I’ll endeavour to answer all your questions in a post next week once the coverage embargo lifts.
