I liked it. Most of the funny moments are already in the trailer. Funniest part of the whole movie was
when he shoved that dude's head up that other guy's ass.
:lol. I thought I was gonna pass out from laughing. Overall a good movie, I recommend you go see it. Plus you get to see the DTESS trailer. I didn't even know they were making it.

The trailer pretty much shows every good scene in the movie. Basically the first hour is almost entirely made up of scenes shown in the trailer. Really nothing surprised me. The definition of 6 out of 10.

Solid movie to me. The ending could have been tweaked a bit though.

I would have been really happy at the very end if:
Hancock flew into an apartment sweat with Jada or Halle there waiting for him.

Would have been funny, but alas, that isn't the point I guess.

I did not see that trailer.

Anyway, I went in with low expectations and I ended up enjoying it. I would not say it's a great movie, and I was not a fan of the plot twist, but it was definitely entertaining.

How old are you?

Fucking seriously. I wish movie directors/writers wouldn't go for this inane, childish humor all the damn time.

I enjoyed it. The plot twist was fine for me. I kept wondering how they were going to introduce some conflict because it seemed pretty straight forward for the first 30-45 minutes. Worked better than having some asinine super-villain show up or something like that at least. I definitely rolled my eyes at the prison scene.

Truth be told, I'm kinda mixed on the situation. Like most people, I did like like the first half. Thought it was fairly humorous in a charming way for the most part. I also like the revelation of Hancock's origins. Thought it was a bit more interesting than just a mere government experiment creating a super soldier or whatever.

My negatives deal mainly from the damn plotholes that occur after the twist.
Why did Hancock get hurt when he wasn't anywhere near Charlize Theron? I mean, you would think it was instantaneous, as the ending implied when he just jumped out the hospital and quickly regained his powers.
Oh, and also
what was Charlize Theron going on about before the fight between her and Hancock broke out? I probably missed a crucial moment or something, but didn't she say that the reason she left was because Hancock kept interfering with her life or something?
The trailers did a really shitty job of making you that surprised about
Charlize Theron's role
, I mean you can fucking guess what may happen just by Hancock's statement 'I'm the only one of my kind'. This movie is very simiilar to 'Jumper' where you have a pretty interesting mythos that's present, but not given a chance to be expanded and explored. Probably the only other major issue was not having a
real supervillain. God, what the hell, that hook guy was fucking lame.
Speaking of villains, why the hell do these dumbass prisoners, who having previously been on the receiving end of Hancock's boots think that they stand any more than half a chance against this motherfucking monster? I hate it when the writers don't think of this sort of thing.

Oh, and interestingly enough, I didn't have a problem with the fact that the movie changed tones in the final act. Truth be told, I don't really understand the complaints, since I thought it was kinda similar to Spiderman in that regard. *shrug*

I think Hancock a really cool premise, just needed a tad better execution, clear up some of the conflicting issues about the powers, and get a better villain, and it would have been great. It's a helluva lot better than I am Legend, that's for sure.

Btw, as you might have already guess, the prison scene was fucking stupid. Godddamn Bergmen.

you should listen to this week's episode of filmspotting. they talk about hancock, and apparently the script has been circulating in hollywood for years. big, big tone and script revisions were made. i wonder what sort of movie this would have been had they actually filmed the original script (not to say that was definitely immaculate or anything--could have been better, could have been worse)

I'll have to check that out, actually. The only other thing I know about the script is that it was supposed to be a lot darker, involving some statuatory rape even or something like that.

here's a review from 2007 for the script, originally titled tonight, he comes. some of the highlights:

Next we jump to the crucial character. We’ll call him HANCOCK; like John Hancock. His character at the beginning opens up to showing a man who looks lonely. He goes to differently slimy hotels (the kind where you can hear the ladies of the night doing their thing). He even takes his shot at getting prostitutes but he can’t get his “best friend” below up for that. You see Hancock is not your Superman, with the nice hair, gentleman like. He’s maybe like many guys you see and know except he has exceptional abilities such as super strength, but he’s also ill inside. He’s quick with his words so much he sounds like an adult version of Dr Seuss. Shoot, he can even fly!. . .

Meanwhile, back in la-la land… Hancock, although he is superhero, he is not all there. Perhaps it’s the years of being a superhero. All the crimes, the loneliness, but also the abilities he has can be an impairment. But Mary has a thing for Hancock. And why not? Her husband ignores her like’s tomorrow utility bill payment. One night, Hancock flies to her window. He asks her to go with him.. He whisks her to some deserted area in Brooklyn, He has food, lights (well they’re flares) and music (really a boom box; this is NYC you know!) She doesn’t know what to think. She does like him, but inside she loves her husband. She tells Hancock she cannot accept his advances. But he is having a hard time accepting and this is where Mary gets nervous. What they both don’t know. The police have been searching for Hancock. Why? Well we see him as a superhero but you know cops siempre metido en what they don’t need to be. In minutes we now see SWAT team closing in. And Hancock starts to feel anxiety!?

:lol

bolded that last line because it just cracked me up. wtf is with that shit? anyway, it's a pretty interesting read.

have you seen the rundown, oblivion? if you liked the sort of comedy in the first half and would appreciate some good action as well, it was one of peter berg's movies prior to this and is much more solid. i recommend it.

Nope, I haven't. If you think it's good, tho, I'll definitely check it out if I get the chance!

I liked it. After I read some spoilers I expected the worst. But the twist didn't ruin it for me . Will Smith is awesome, as always, and the whole thing was fun. But I dont feel the need to watch it again soon.

I saw it a couple of days ago. I liked it for what it was, it definitely isn't one of my favorite movies ever but if you go in thinking that then you'll definitely be disappointed. I thought it had lots of potential story-wise but apparently it went with another concept than what I would have liked but it was a fun enough movie on its own right.

Just saw it. It was a solid movie, even though so much shit had been spoiled by the trailers. I can think of a lot things wrong with the movie: not enough time spent on anti-hero Hancock, lame ass mythology, weak ending, horrible camera work (which is something I almost never care about) and perhaps the worst movie villain of all time.

But all in all, I thought it was more enjoyable than bad, and the main cast all did pretty well, especially Smith and Bateman. I think the writers/director could have done a lot more with the concept, and what they had done could have been executed better, but as it is, Hancock was a decent popcorn flick: forgettable, but still fun.

btw can someone make sure that when the numbers are finally revealed the box office thread is titled "Will Smith's epic 'cock beats off competition"?

Holy shit. :lol I've been wondering about what could have been, but I think I should be thankful Hancock ended up the way it did, if that was the alternative. :lol :lol
Personally, I find the original version much more interesting but it wouldn't have worked with Will Smith as lead. Guess they needed him to get a resonable budget for special effect etc though.

one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Just ridiculously bad. This is what happens when "hollywood" tries to make a super hero movie. They just throw shit at the wall and pick out what sticks. I figured it would be crap going in, but I had a little hope. oh well

:lol

Even more so, this is getting the most mixed reactions from people ever. I mean you have a pretty even number of like and dislike in the thread at this point.

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I admit I'm a Will Smith fanboy but he had me rolling with laughter pretty much the entire movie. I wouldn't call it the best movie I've ever seen or anything but it was really fun. A summer movie all around.

You really haven't seen a lot of movies then.

I didn't realise Vince Gilligan was involved with the screenplay. :O He's a fantastic writer (most of the time). He wrote some of the best X-Files episodes and imo THE best X Files episode: Bad Blood.

I'll probably get around to seeing this just because of Peter Berg's, Gilligan's and Bateman's involvement, despite all these negative reactions. :/

Went last night. Goddamn you dumbass fucking piece of shit parents! Control your fucking kids or leave the little ADD bastard at home!

... umm anyway, I found it to be an entertaining movie. A lot of the humor and most of the action was spoiled to varying degrees by the trailers and commercials. The twist on Hancock's origin and the humor added something new to what could have been an average superhero flick. My biggest complaint other than the spoiled lines and action scenes is the villain was pretty weak and the events leading up to the final battle seemed rushed and poorly thought out. I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I say they
got arrested and seemingly the next day broke out of what I assume is a max security prison (with one fucking hand mind you) with the intent of hurting a guy that they knew to be invulnerable. ***Real spoiler ahead*** They just happened to luck out when they escaped to find some kind of way Hancock was hospitalized.
Basically they had no real plan.
They knew of no Kryptonite or weakness. They just all said 'let's hurt Hancock' and assumed their desire would somehow make it come to pass?

Yeah this is what I'm talking about. They extended the amount of time spent showing the reactions of the inmates which did get me to laugh. I felt the timing was right to cut back to Hancock and show what he'd done, but they kept showing the reactions for a bit longer and I couldn't help but laugh, but the joke was totally spoiled by the trailers/commercials.

the rundown is actually much more balanced than hancock. dwayne johnson deserves some props for that movie--he was fantastic.

The Rundown is absolutely fantastic. I LOVE that movie. Everyone that hasn't seen it laughs at me when I tell them who is in it and what it's about... then they see it and LOVE it. It's even better if you play drinking games to it, and scream "RUNDOWN!" every time Dwayne does something awesome.

Not yet. Either tonight or tomorrow.

I know GAF is EAGERLY anticipating my opinion.

you'll like the beggining and be disapointed the rest of the movie isnt like that.

Saw the movie last night, it was decent. I wasn't really sure where the script was going, and then boom the movie is over. The ending was turrrrrrrrrrrrrrible and slightly marred a decent build up. Movie overall felt a bit barebones and maybe 15 to 30 minutes too short. If there is a directors cut DVD/Blu Ray to flesh things out more I would want to see this.

Oh and yes go see The Rundown. The movie is brilliant. Still the best movie The Rock has starred in. Great script, great action, great comedy. Underrated classic.

i saw it over the weekend. it's basically an underdog story desguised as a superhero movie. normally i veer far, far away from the summer blockbuster-will smith fare, but i could tell from a synopsis that this would be for me, and it was. 'cock didn't have any trappings that these big budget movies have - no lame jokes, no superflous matrix-esque effects sequences, no swinging with the monkeys, no action figure tie-ins. it was just a good movie that never went out of bounds.

I think you're looking for the Wanted thread.

What? I'm not sure what you meant by that. Hopefully it's not "Wanted was only good in the beginning" because the whole thing ruled.

Are the people in this thread praising Hancock the same people who bash IJ4?

If so, give up on movies. You have no taste in cinema. You suck.

Both movies suck. As such, I have bashed both.

Wanted is brought down by the fact that the rest of the movie doesn't come close to the awesomeness of the opening hit.
