Hannibal S3 |OT| Man Destroys God. Hannibal Eats Man. Hannibal Inherits The Earth.

That is one possible interpretation. Another is that
Hannibal and Will survived and they came back to have an old friend for dinner.

There is A LOT of ways that one can go from here:

Maybe they are dead. Maybe one is. Maybe they both survived and are on the lam. Maybe Frederick Chilton will recover and hunt Hannibal.

Oh, that'd be great. It felt like they were setting him up a bit to become more Hannibal-esque... all his suffering has propelled him into a league comparable to Verger.

One thing's for sure, this is far better as a series finale than season 2's lol could you imagine?

I think it topped the Breaking Bad finale for me, or at the very least matched it. I honestly felt the same way at this end as I did for the ending of that other show. The finale itself was carthartic. At the end I just felt numb and so satisfied. The last 10 minutes are just fucking mind blowing. The visuals. The music. So beautiful. This adapatation completely annihilates the Bret Ratner adaptation of Red Dragon, which is the only one I've seen.

This show's version of Dolarhyde is godly. Like, actually fucking terrifying. A sinister as fuck killing machine. I just didn't see that in him in the promos before this arc began. Didn't think you can have a villian on the level of Hannibal. Guy was a beast.

As for the ending... You guys covered a lot of it already. If it doesn't continue I think I'm okay with it. I'm so satisfied with what happened. If it does continue I'm sure they can explain their way out of it and I'll still be satisfied. It works either way.

Btw, even though I personally enjoyed the first few episodes of this season. It's crazy to think how far we've come in 13 episodes. Where we were at the beginning of season 3. To the Verger farms. To this conclusion. 13 episodes and yet it feels like a longer journey to me. The story has been through so many places. Maybe the pacing was off for the first few episodes (although I personally enjoyed them) but they sure as hell made up for it during the rest of the season.

This is what we got when MGM/Lifetime or whoever wouldn't play ball with the Silence of the Lambs rights.

Seriously, such a great ending.
Hey, Lifetime put out UnREAL, so there's a chance their Clarice Starling show might be good.

Or doesn't get off the ground at all.

But damn if that wasn't a stylish finale.

WHAT AN ENDING!!!!!!

The cinematography at the end was simply outstanding!

It could end no other way!!! And that song at the end!!!!!!

Goodbye Hannibal!

I know it could be considered ambiguous, but I think
it's clear that Bedelia amputated her own leg in anticipation of Hannibal's escape.

As was mentioned before ITT, she survived by anticipating Hannibal's desires throughout the series. She knew he would escape in S2, so she packed her bags and had plane tickets ready, etc, etc. She knew he was coming to eat her, so she prepared the meal herself. Hence why she is looking so nervous, hoping he's pleased.

Second, Hannibal was never random about what part of someone he ate, unless it was a "meal of opportunity" like Chilton's lip. Given his history with Bedelia, I am not sure why he would go the Eddie Izzard route again. And I don't think he ever repeated a meal in the entire series, so this is unlike him.

Finally, there is the presentation of the meal - note the leaves along the leg, tied in bows. It's a gift. She is making an offering of herself.

Now I want my Scott Thompson spinoff! Jimmy Price, M.E.! Tune in each week to see Jimmy cheerfully unfazed by the most heinous shit we can get past the network censors!

Just finished the finale and oh my god. I literally said that out loud during the last 5 minutes or so and number of times. That was a perfect ending. And it allows for more Hannibal should that day ever come.
Poor Molly and her son.

WOOOOOOOOWWWW..... early this season, I assumed the finale would just be a lead-in to SOTL. I certainly didn't expect THAT ending, but I feel with respect to S1+S2, it was a brilliant finish. The song at the end was ridiculously chilling, and I've been thinking about that last scene for hours. And Bedelia --- that woman, there are no words...

Question: should I watch the hannibal movies before watching the show?

You could, but the movies, the books and the show are separate entities and the knowledge of one of them is not required to enjoy any other.

The show is the best of all of them IMO, with possible exception of Silence of the Lambs.

The Red Dragon arc could have been better but that ending was a very satisfying end for the series. I still like Season 2 as the best series finale but it now pales in comparison with season 3 just existing.

Wow, just wow. That ending. Wow.

Edit:

Wait, am I misinterpreting the ending? I thought
Bedelia is used to being a few steps ahead of Hannibal in terms of manipulation as we saw in the beginning of the season where it was revealed she knew he wanted to eat him and how or in the previous season where she escapes before Hannibal gets to kill her. Now, realizing that Hannibal will most likely escape, she becomes paranoid and crazy enough to set up this dinner and cuts of her leg and cooks it as a sign of amends in order to appease Hannibal so he won't kill her. She suspects he'll bring his murder husband Will so she sets three plates. What she doesn't realize is that Hannibal and Will (though unconfirmed) are dead and so the tragedy is she cut her leg off for nothing, and in addition will most likely live in fear and paranoia for the rest of her life in disbelief that Hannibal is dead. We already saw how terrified she was of Will's plan, it's not that big of a jump to see that she would cut off her own leg. This is one of the few times she's not in control, so she panics like hell.

That's the way I took it though I can see how they could have season 4 and that scene could be interpreted differently as a hint of the two surviving. It was a really good open door with how her panic could be many things but it works so well as an ending, showing Hannibal's overwhelming influence on people.

She's doped up to her eyeballs and minus a leg
, I'm a big fan of the dream reality in the show but
Hannibal must have survived, there is no way she managed that on her own

It just hit me this morning what Will did:
his killing blow on Dolarhyde was a disembowelment. He did the same thing to Dolarhyde as to what Hannibal did to him. Very fitting.

Agreed 100%.

Mentioned it on the last page but you can see her eyes dart to the right when the camera focuses on her leg during that shot. Definitely someone there with her. Her expression seals the deal imo.

Edit:
Having watched the scene again, doesn't look like there's a room to her right when the camera pans out for the last time like I originally thought. Still, her looking to her right seems too blatant to mean nothing. I'll take the intentional ambiguity either way, but I definitely interpreted it as Hannibal having made it out at least.

Has anyone mentioned the very very very subtle subtext of her dress? She's been rocking the funeral chic since Florence and suddenly she's in the most revealing outfit in her wardrobe. She looked like she had a pubescent but cultured teen for a stylist. Hannibal's fucking alive.

Agreed completely. And a season 4 was definitely intended; in addition to the interviews saying everything was wrapped before the cancellation news,
teasing Buffalo Chilton
isn't something you do if you think this is the end.

It's a perfect ending like I said, but it was absolutely not made with that in mind, which is why I'm kind of confused with the misinterpretations. We've heard repeatedly for months that this wasn't meant to be the end, that it would still satisfy if it was though.

That's goddamn perfect. Fuller, you magnificent bastard. You figured out the solution.

Buffalo Chilton? That would be interesting.

Buffalo Chilton? That would be interesting.

They could have went in an entirely different direction in another season or a film, but
Alana saying to him "you've never felt comfortable in your own skin, what makes you think you'd be comfortable in someone else's" seems like way too much a coincidence of a line if they weren't at least considering going that path. Certainly wouldn't be the first time they made a big change, and also certainly wouldn't be the first time they have Chilton ultimately get fucked up in the end of a season.

God damn you Fuller leave Chilton alone :[

I didn't understand
the escape
it obviously didn't work as intended, the red dragon killed police
but what was supposed to happen? and why did they just carry on?
even before the escape I expected the whole thing to be a ploy by hannibal and red dragon to actually help hannibal escape, so I thought that happened. now I am just confused

anyway, beautiful ending. it needs to continue. not right now, but sometime.

Someone needs to tie me up and to stop me from looking at this thread. Not looking at the spoilers, but even so, it's driving me nuts that I have to wait another 36 hours to see just how great it is.

Agreed with both of you! High five!
As someone else said, the point of the end credits is to show Hannibal's agency still lives on in the world.

Do you have a screencap?
It may just be that she is looking towards the entrance in anticipation of Hannibal, but he never comes.

She did that so when Hannibal came he woildn't want to kill her but instead get horny and want to make love to her instead. She's doing EVERYTHING in her power to appease Hannibal for when he inevitably comes for her to eat her (as she states in the beginning of the episode when Will speaks about letting Hannibal go and how he should just slit their throats already since Hannibal will surely kill them).

Hey man, it'd be amazing if Season 4 was actually about
Hannibal's victims playing detective with a new killer in the aftermath of Season 3.

Like, I wanna see Mirriam Lass team up with Buffalo Chill. Can you imagine the snark?

At work so no unfortunately >.<. Will try to snag one at home tonight if no one else is able to dig it up.
It's right when her face goes out of focus as the leg comes into full view.
.

Also, not positive on this, but I *think* you should be spoiler tagging your post? Not out for a while for most folks.

As for any future stories, I see
Chilton taking on a Mason Verger role (seeking revenge). Alana is obviously now in Chilton's old role. But I can't fathom how Will's story continues. Is he truly working with Hannibal now? And, once again, poor Molly and her kid. There is still a lot they could explore before they ever got to SotL.

I have to say, this season seemed like a love letter to the shippers

god, that embrace, those looks... these two people are SO in love one with the other.

Anyway, perfect ending

you can leave everything in the air and you can continue at the same time, kind of like with Sherlock.

I don't think Bedelia managed to do that by herself, but then again... it's not important. It works both ways.

That's the good thing about this ending: it works both ways.

But I have to say

there is no way you can adapt Silence after this, so either Fuller fully knew this was the end or he was planning to do all new material, which is fine.

I might be alone in this, but I really didn't like the ending. But then again, I have always been annoyed by how Fuller handled Will Graham's character and the focus on some sort of romantic connection between Hannibal and Will, so the ending of the show revolving around that was extremely disappointing for me.

Also, was it just me or were Molly, her son and Freddy Lounds just useless wastes of screentime? All of them had their most important scenes from the book cut and/or switched to another character. I would've rather had that those characters were just cut from the season in favor of more development for Dolarhyde, who felt like some poorly written side character.

Fuller's Will Graham is easily one of my most favorite characters to grace the TV screen so I'm guessing I'm going to love the ending(still have to wait till Saturday -_-).

I would say that Dolarhydes character was done masterfully, until the finale.
It really didn't fit with the evolution of his character

Amazing.

Will and Hannibal relationship was the crux of the entire series, if a person didn't like that I wonder why they watched the show?

My main gripe with Dolarhyde in the show was that the whole internal struggle between The Dragon and his affection for Reba was kind of thrown out, which made the sudden change from 'Hey Reba, I'm going to kill you now' to 'Oh, I can't watch you burn' in the opening scene of this episode really odd.

Will and Hannibal relationship was the crux of the entire series, if a person didn't like that I wonder why they watched the show?
I mostly watched for the other characters and their interactions with Hannibal (and the other murderers on the show), and really the 'Hannibal <3 Will'-angle was much less obnoxious in S1 and S2. In this season I actually zoned out as soon as Will and/or Bedelia came on screen because it's the only thing they talked about.

Soooo is it possible that there will be a Hannibal Panel at Comic Con or other conventions next year even though the show is cancelled (for now) or would that be very unusual? : (
I want to see the cast together again...
