Typically how people with taste works. Its been the same. When I was 12, Aliens all the way. Now, I prefer Alien 3 to Aliens. I would have that mess of a movie, rather than watching one of the most Christ like characters on screen. Which hurts it all the more, since Ripley in one was just a survivor. She made poor choices, she made choices that angered the audience, she was human. My first time watching it, I wouldn't have even guessed she was the main character and thought she was a bitch after trying to leave Kane outside due to company policy. How many fucking films do you have your lead want to abandon a crew member? Yet in hindsight, it turned out to be the correct decision. Its bit like that which made the film phenomenal.
Followed it up with Aliens, where every damn thing that comes out of her mouth and every action, is exactly what the audience knows is right. It become more increasingly painful to watch when you're old enough to realize how shallow the film is in comparison to the original.
Shallow? Every character in Aliens was built up and had it's unique personality. Not sure how the heck you can call it shallow. I mean how many characters from that movie are iconic.
