Happy ALIEN Day - LV4/26

It seems like Fox is trying to get the series back on some kind of positive track IMO, but I'll admit they probably don't even know what they want.

They don't. They never did. This is a series that should have never been a series, honestly, and they lucked out in having their first attempt at Alien II stall out long enough for James Cameron to fall into Carroll/Giler/Hill's laps fresh off of his frustration with First Blood pt. II.

The kind of "fuck it, we have this ALIEN thing, get more bullshit out there" that strikes at Fox every 5-6 years is partially the reason "the canon" is such a dripping mess, and it's definitely why a lot of the fans don't even care about said canon. Just take the bits you like and leave the rest.

This series is less a guaranteed hit of the good shit that knocked you out the first time you took it, and more like that opium pill you have to ram up your asshole in a Scottish toilet. You really want to get high but you're pretty sure it's not worth it anymore.

I mean, you're still tucking it up there, but that's because you're an addict.

I think it's cool as hell it's trending on twitter all morning and love seeing people's artwork and such. Why the negativity?

Well, part of that is this wrong assumption that you need Ripley in every Alien film. You don't. Aliens should have ended her story, IMO. Then you pick up with some Colonial Marines, or some settlers, or something else.

Sequels fail because they "follow" the wrong characters.

More like Alien=Aliens. They are different genres, but are among the best in them.

I see it like Remake vs RE4. Both games are top tier at what they do and both games are immensely enjoyable for entirely different reasons despite sharing the same universe.

Time to play the Alien 1 dlc tonight!

I've watched Prometheus twice and I still can't see the shit the bed movie everyone hates

When I watch it, I feel like I'm watching something with a lot of great stuff in it, yet it doesn't quite achieve what it could have. There are standout moments but it reaches its peak during the abortion scene. I felt the climax was a bit lacking, cool stuff happened during the climax like when the giant facehugger attacks the engineer but Shaw should have had more of a standoff or cat and mouse with the engineer, more like Ripley and the xeno in the original.

It also doesn't help that the movie doesn't really have an ending. It's being picked up by Covenant, sure, but I'm under the impression that while it's a follow-up that it isn't the direct follow-up we were expecting. We don't even know if Rapace is in it. So I think these things coupled together left me feeling a little underwhelmed, but I don't dislike it. Basically it's dumb in some ways and a bit underdeveloped, but not a bad film.

Worst thing about Prometheus is I'm actually looking forward to the sequel even though it will probably be dumb because it's about David and he was the best character in that movie.

Well, part of that is this wrong assumption that you need Ripley in every Alien film. You don't.

And then they do end Ripley's story (pretty decently, honestly) only to start it over again, with her as a WNBA star, and now they're leaving people dangling on the ridiculous hope that Neill Blomkamp is going to somehow pull a Superman Returns on the Alien series with... 70-year-old Ripley. In xenojammies.

Nobody's learning shit here, basically.

Well that's definitely one way to put it haha. I'm still somewhat hopeful about the series's future.

It fascinates me that Terminator -> Terminator 2 and Alien -> Aliens seem to follow the exact same path. Both franchises start off as horror/survival movies that shift into big action movies for the sequels. Obviously Cameron having his fingers on 3 of the 4 movies is a big influence. It was a really smart way to let the sequels stand out and be good while somewhat shedding comparisons to the first movie.

Alien is more sublime and there's no real "action" until the end, but I felt that Aliens also felt like a horror movie with plenty of tension despite its bigger focus on action and marines and stuff. The scene with Ripley and Newt in the bunker when dumbass slips the facehugger in there with them was always incredibly tense to me and I feel that way about numerous scenes in the film.

So I guess while they are different in some ways, I never thought Aliens was some huge departure. Action horror with the tension intact. It has shootbang and tons of violence, but the atmosphere and tension was incredible.

I ended up picking up the bluray anthology set after playing Isolation, probably one of the best of it's kind. It's worth picking up for the special features alone.
It really helped me have a new found respect and appreciation on Alien 3 in particular, especially after hearing about the premise of the wooden planet story.

This will be mine i swear.

With only a run of 70 and less than that available online? Probably not, but you've got about 23 minutes to prepare. (Ain't gonna be mine, either, but I'm gonna try!)

The facehugger in medical scene in Aliens is the most tense scene in either of the first two movies in my opinion. Those facehuggers are terrifying little buggers plus the scene itself leaves me on edge because you're basically watching an attempted xeno-rape.

Yeah. I don't get that Aliens is this big dumb action movie. The craft is just as good in its own way and it still feels like a horror film. I don't think marines and guns inherently strip the fear, tension or atmosphere out of something, and every action scene had tons of buildup and slow burn. The first time they go on a drop, nothing even happens. The second time it builds for a while. After that it focuses on a smaller group trying to survive and prepare for an absolute onslaught, and it's super intense.

It's bigger in scale particularly the climax, but it isn't vacant of the things that made the original great IMO. The original simply feels like more of a slasher like the original Halloween.

Aw, man. Don't say that.

I'm still a believer in Blomkamp. But, if it sucks, I'll be the first to agree.

Man I don't know, I like quite a bit about Prometheus but with the incredibly dumb parts in the writing I would never say it's a better movie than Alien 3. Obviously it has it's own problems but I really, really like Alien 3, and while it's not as good as the first two I do think it's a fairly worthy end to the Ripley story.

I don't think Ressurection is really a bad movie, it's just a bad Alien movie. Replace the Aliens with other creatures and it's okay, but when you have a Queen giving vaginal birth to that thing at the end you've fucked up horribly. Bringing Ripley back was also a very bad move. Plus, I hate the color brown.

I've hated Star Wars Day, Batman day is even worse, and now Alien Day makes me want to punch someone in the dick. That being said I'm definitely getting the Prometheus LP in a bit.

Adding to cart doesn't mean anything on Mondo. Once you start to checkout it'll give you a message that it's sold out.

I decided against getting the ALIENS Mondo soundtrack, as I already own the Wrath of Khan Mondo soundtrack, so I have 76% of this on 180-gram vinyl already.

On sites using Shopify like Mondo and Bottleneck the item isn't sold out until the button on the product page says Sold Out, previous to that there is still inventory being held in people's carts. When you get the "Inventory issue" page you can actually keep refreshing that page and maybe catch one if it drops out of someone's cart. That said, I tried but failed, as expected, for the Jay Shaw x-ray print.

I'm aware of that, just surprised it doesn't show up as sold out on the page already. I guess it takes them a bit to update that stuff?

Putting aside the great qualities of the movie, it's aesthetic influences are astounding and cement it as one of most important visual works of our era.

Huh, I guess I could have gotten it then. It now shows sold out. It's a cool idea but not something I wanted.

Loving this thread, mostly due to the awesome (Alien paraphernalia) photos and gifs.

A masterpiece at squandering even more potential? Sure.

Prometheus is not a better movie than Alien 3. It's a big fat mess.

Prometheus is a waste.

My man, we may not agree on Scarlet Jo's acting range (skills even)...

But to say Prometheus is better than Alien 3, is just plain wrong!

Here's hoping they have some sweet MONDO prints at the my Alamo tonight. Those bottleneck ones are awesome.

Not gonna include Prometheus & the Vs. films?

I mean, if you're really gonna go from the rooter to the tooter, you gotta include the whole pig.

As much as people rail on Prometheus, I enjoy it far more than Alien 4. 3 I go back and forth on. VS are just bad bad bad.

Not gonna lie, I think the first AvP movie is totally watchable. Don't get me wrong, it has massive issues. But it is a masterpiece compared to AvP: Requiem.

spoiler warning please? I've been waiting to see alien until the prometheus movies are done and there is no indication that this thread is about the movie.

the movie is like 40 years old and there's no reason why you should wait to watch Alien. In a thread celebrating the movies it's likely full of people who have seen it and don't think they're spoiling anything.

Some of you guys have been here far too long to be taking that mac post this seriously.

Also, fresh new comedy: So Reebok's Ripley shoes (the whole reason there's even an Alien Day, basically) are apparently only available in Men's sizes, and even then, only in sizes 9 and up.

So if you're a woman who likes Ripley, you're shit out of luck, I guess.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

I don't understand why the Alien series gets so much love from Fox but the Predator series was, at least used to, be so ignored.

Fucking seriously?

I do like the idea there's a bunch of crazed male fans destroying the F5 trying to purchase themselves a pair of women's shoes.

Kinda sucks actual women are apparently ass-out of buying or fitting them, though.
