I did the WHIPLASH package and won SNAKEPIT passes through the Metclub contest! Giants Stadium this Sunday!

Congrats!

The first time I saw them was on the floor, and I'd never been to a show before. This was Summer Sanitarium 2002, I think. I got a good spot up front before Mudvayne came on, but didn't think through not eating or drinking anything beforehand. Practically had to be carried out at the end of the night. Swore I'd never get floor or pit passes ever again.

Heh. I've seen them dozens of times, almost always on the barricade. This was the first time I've ever NOT gotten GA because I'm going with my girlfriend... and I won snakepit!

Best experience will forever be the St. Anger Fillmore shows. 500 hardcore clubbers; I'm on the barricade with my brother, high-fiving all of them (save Lars, behind a kit and all) after every song.

I'm going to head out for Baltimore shortly. Psyched for my GA ticket. Will be as close as I can. I haven't seen Metallica perform live since 1996 so this is long overdue.

Damn, have a good time. They sounded really tight during rehearsals last night.

The only band I've been that close to was CKY a couple times last decade. I think if I were that close to James I'd turn into a little girl. People like me are the reason he doesn't do meet & greets anymore.

30 more after like 8 years doesn't seem that outlandish. Also look at the state of record sales, they need to make up for the difference somehow.

I think it's outlandish, some of these prices for concerts nowadays are a joke. I don't think Metallica need to make up for the difference in record sales either, they got the ownership of all their master recordings a couple of years ago, so they'll be swimming in money for the rest of their lives regardless.

But people are willing to pay it, so I can't really blame them. At least they always put on a great show and play 2.5 to 3 hours, it could be worse.

Alright... so as a long time Metallica fan whose favorite albums include ...And Justice For All, The Black Album, Garage Inc., Load and Reload, I have to say that I'm not really enjoying this new album. I'm a huge fan of ballads, hence why Fade to Black is my favorite Metallica song by a very long shot. Despite that, I do enjoy a lot of songs that aren't in the same vein, also explaining why I enjoy Load and Reload, but there's not a single tune in this album that reminds me of their older work.

I just finished the album and most of the tracks sounded too alike. I can't believe I'm saying this but I didn't enjoy a single song. What the hell? As badly regarded as St. Anger is, I actually managed to walk away from that one with a song or two that I enjoyed, Death Magnetic as well. This? Nah. I can't. I'm actually pretty disappointed.

I think it's a fuckin masterpiece. I've been listening to it almost every day for the past 6 months or so and can't get tired of it.

Give it a few more listens and see if anything grows on you. St. Anger took me a few runs before anything really grabbed me.

Personally, I feel that the first disc is much stronger than the second. If the album was only those six songs, plus Spit Out the Bone, I would have been happy. Dream No More and Halo on Fire are definitely new favorites of mine.

I've got to say, I'm not a fan of their stadium setup.

It looks like you wouldn't be able to see the actual band unless you were really up close, and if you're really up close I imagine those huge screens put a strain on your eyes.

I wish they would have kept doing their in-the-round set-up. I paid $85 for 100 level seats when I saw them in Tampa back in 2009. They were damn good seats too, and it didn't feel so far away since the stage was in the center. This time I paid about the same price for the Orlando show and I'm on the complete opposite side of the stadium.

Oh well, as long as they play Creeping Death I can die happy.

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.

Spit out the Bone tunning room video.

I guess there is a reason it hasnt debuted live just yet. Give it time.

Ballzy (?) move to release such a raw video though.

That's incredibly embarrassing for professional musicians.

They sound like a high school band trying to learn the song, not a band who's been playing for 30-40 years who wrote the goddamn tune.

Lars is just the worst.

Saw them a week ago at Nassau Coliseum. Much better setup than the "one side" stadium setup.

This was about 15min before they took the stage:

This was during Four Horseman I think:

The place was packed the fuck out.

This was probably the tightest I've ever seen them play live since the late 90s. I hope they come around for a 2nd leg, would love to see them again.

It also made me realize that the last time they came around for a US tour was about 8 years ago or so. 8 years is a long time and I bet there were tons of teens and young adults seeing them live for the first time.

Stunned that you couldn't find something to like on Disc One. Atlas, Rise? Confusion? The last two minutes of Halo On Fire is some of the best stuff they've written in decades.

Seriously, disc 1 is the best stuff they've done since the black album in my mind. And from disc 2 I like confusion, revenge, most of savage and spit out the bone is alright. I also don't get the argument that it doesn't sound like their old stuff when Kirk pretty much has his classic tone throughout.

As for live, saw them in Philly and they were awesome. The HD screens are great.

I've loved every Metallica record short of St Anger and I cannot get into the one. Halo on Fire is the only song that works for me and even then it's production is unnecessarily drawn out. I'm not even disappointed, just really ambivalent about it.

Going to the popup store today! Will probably spend a lot more than I should.
Heck yeah! Go nuts! I bought 3 shirts and a vinyl, then got a couple more shirts at the show the next day. I can post some pics from the snake pit if anyone's interested! I got a sweaty high-five from Lars! Was a great time.
I guess they stream their tuning room jams somewhere now?

Spit out the Bone is coming together compared to that first video. Relying on Robs questionable backing vocals is what it is tho. Practice aint gonna fix that

They stream them at the show. There will be a URL on the monitors that you can use to watch live.

Saw them in Denver a couple of weeks ago. We had a rain/lightning delay, but they came back out and played the intro to Ride the Lightning. They still put on the best show I've ever seen live.

For merch they had colorado themed stuff color wise, including a Broncos color jersey that had 17 for the number, name place was hardwired, and said metallica on the front with this metal head. It's awesome.

Saw them last night. Best concert I've been to hands town. The energy in a sold out stadium was amazing!

I've always thought the Hardwired lyrics where kinda cheesy but that song is a thing of beauty live. 40k people singing along with "we're so fucked, shit outta luck" is fun.

I'm not a fan of the album version but yeah, when that intro hit and they came out on stage I found a whole new appreciation of the song.

I saw them in Houston on the 11th, was lucky enough to get to hear a setlist with Creeping Death in it. Previously saw them in '05 and '02, and they looked and sounded better this time than they ever have. The show was incredible. I would have killed to have seen them with you guys at Soldier Field.

I also spent way too fucking much on merchandise.

I was extremely satisfied with their Houston outing. But holy fuck it was so damn loud. Maybe because they had a roof.

My friend saw them in San Antonio and Dallas and said those shows weren't as loud. But hey, maybe it was the hearing damage.

Typical of an opening act at a Metallica show though. Every time I've been to see them the openers have terrible mixes and when they come out everything gets cranked to 11.

Volbeat sounded really good, though. Their mix was up there with Metallica as far as clarity goes.

We're not gonna talk about Mixmaster Mike.

Yeah Avenged Sevenfold would loud as fuck and super distorted and unbearable. Metallica was loud but clear and good.

I know the lyrics to a few of Avenged's songs but could follow them for the life of me. Also I swear at one point the dude on backing vocals was just yelling "wha wha wha wha wha" in a weird high-pitched voice. Yeah, the sound was that bad for them.

Could you guys see the band from where you were? It looks like you have to be super close to not have to rely on the mega screens.

Quick facts about the current tour:

The stage production travels between cities on 48 trucks

Each show takes three days to set up

More than 40,000 individual speakers deliver over 350,000 total watts of audio

The stage features 83 laser fixtures, which took a combined 640 hours to program to the band’s songs

Each night, the show generates 2.5 megawatts of power, which is enough to power 1,800 homes for a month

Damn.

Shit. Thats nuts. I'm sure their making some serious bank too. Its crazy to think about how much this all costs up front. Its a gamble to go out on a stadium tour but given nearly everything is sold out it seems like the investment paid off.

Its safe to say there will never be another metal band at this level for a very long time, if ever.

I'm happy my favorite genre can get represented in stadiums like this.

Also, I was to the right of the stage in the second level, first row. I could see it perfectly. At first I was concerned because the natural shape of stadiums is to face slightly towards the center of the field, but sitting that didn't really matter and it didn't but me tilting a tiny bit more to the left. Also, everyone was standing for Metallica so not like it mattered.

Finally getting around to listening to this. Sounds like a better version of Death Magnetic. Better vocals, better riffs, better production. Doesn't hold a candle to the first four albums, but still much better than I expected. Just a solid, fun album.

Semi-unrelated note: James, Lars, and Kirk look great with gray hair. All of their TV performances have been fantastic. They don't sound tired at all. Hell, they sounded more tired 10 years ago.

Watching here, too. Looks like they're playing the same setlist they played here in Houston. It was kind of funny when they were here being the only one in my section singing along with every word to Hit The Lights. Really glad I got to hear that one live.

I know it's cliche, but these guys got me into playing guitar, gave me something to work towards, and helped me through some bad times growing up. Seeing them still together and in such a good place this far into their career is just incredible.

Wish I would have seen this sooner. Even though I did see them in concert 12 days ago.

What has the setlist been?

edit: kinda wished they played blackened when I saw them.

I haven't been watching the whole thing but I saw in no given order:

Master of Puppets
Seek and destroy
Hit the lights
Fade to black
One
Sad but true
For whom the bell tolls
Pulling teeth
