I agree that Dystopia is awesome, and you're probably right about it being the best thing since Rust but even that can only be achieved by getting fresh members into the band.

I've been a fan of Megadeth for 27yrs now and it always felt that Dave was trying to follow Metallicas output especially in the 90s releasing a few commercially styled albums but once Risk had been all but a distant memory it seemed like Megadeth were trying to get back on track with their style. End Game is a fantastic album in my ears, and almost like a So Far, So Good II but when I heard Super Collider I thought Dave had dropped and broken his lightning in a bottle. There's only two tracks Ilike on that, "Dancing in the Rain" and the Thin Lizzy cover "Cold Sweat". Then I heard Dystopia.

Some will say it's rubbish and recycling riffs we've heard before but so what? It lives up to Megadeths original style, speed and politically driven and that's when Megadeth were in their prime. And now Metallica have had two primo albums which wouldn't have sounded out of place if they'd came out after AJFA.
Well, I'm glad you all enjoy Dystopia. I'm a huge Megadeth fan, too, so I'm not wanting to dislike it or anything like that. I just think Dave's done better. Even some of the songs on Thirteen were more fun for me to listen to. 'Deadly Nightshade' and 'We The People' were a couple of highlights. But the album lacked cohesion. Dystopia is a little better than that one, but still suffers from the same problems for me.

It's too bad, too, because 'Fatal Illusion' really had me pumped for the album. I was a pretty big fan of that song. But it just never quite lived up to that quality for the whole thing.

Re-watching the making of videos and man it looks like Kirk just not give a single fuck anymore... He shows up to record his solos...

I mean, it's always been James and Lars who composed the songs but at least Robert hangs around and gives his input.

And he didn't even write the solos. He just showed up and improvised everything. I wish he would actually take the time to write some better solos.

I am honestly baffled by your opinions and I don't mean that in a rude way it's just, odd lol.
Fatal Illusion is cool but, imo it doesn't hold a candle to the duo of Conquer or Die+Lying in State which I think are incredible, Bullet to the Brain and I love the emperor, love the lyrics on that one, feels like a better version if Sweating Bullets. I also liked the direction they took with Poisonous Shadows. Then add in Fatal Illusion+ Dystopia+The Threat is Real and I don't see how anyone sees this album as anything short of great, and id say it's more consistent in quality than even Rust in Peace which I love but I feel like Poison is the Cure and Lucretia are really out of place and kill the momentum of the first four.

Dare I say it but after plenty of listens the only things Rust in Peace has on Dystopia are more intricate sections, bass solos and better solos (Because Marty) and I'd put both at the peak of their catalogue whilst throwing in Killing is my Business. Then below those I'd have Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings and Peace Sells. And so on and so forth and really outside of Endgame I'd say that 2000's era Megadeth is them at their weakest and most uninspired sans Risk which is well...

Lol I guess I'm just odd that way. I love 'Poison Is The Cure' and 'Lucretia' and I don't think Dystopia has anything on Rust In Peace. Your opinion about Dystopia is the same that I have about The System Has Failed. Well, minus the closing track, which was fairly underwhelming. I think they got close again with Endgame, but that's about it.

Spit Out the Bone could do with some more double bass imo. Lars just did the DB section at the end as usual, but I think it could have done with some during the section right after he shouts "Spit out the bone!", and the section before the opening verse.

It does look like Hatfield tracked the guitars by himself.

Dystopia is Rust In Peace-esque but overall it doesn't do too much new. Some of the lyrics are really grating to me personally as well. Great but I honestly can't remember many of the songs.

System Has Failed has great melodies, and Endgame has some monster material. I like United Abominations as well.

Kirk only started recording any rhythm parts on the Black Album, but I think he didn't do them on Death Magnetic either.

There are lots of bands where you'd be surprised to learn how much one band member basically does everything, even in recording. There are plenty of Van Halen songs where EVH himself recorded the bass lines, and for a weird example, in Sum41, lead singer Deryck Whibley records all the guitar parts on their albums now, despite the fact that they have three of them, he barely plays his guitar live, and he didn't even know *how* to play the guitar when they first started touring.

It makes a lot of sense in Metallica though since most of the guitar parts are retracked versions of the same thing. There are probably 8 guitar tracks at any given time, but most if not all of them are playing the same part.

To be fair...

James and Lars write ALL the music. And it's in all the band member's contracts that way.

You can't be in Metallica unless you agree that James and Lars write all of the primary music sections. Kirk is allowed to do solo improv, as is Robert - so long as Lars and James are happy with it. James and Lars have final say on everything.

Actually, Kirk started tracking rhythms on Load, the Black Album was still just Hetfield doing three guitar tracks by himself.

On the second point, you're part right. Most of Metallica's stuff has the rhythm guitars playing the same thing (the only exceptions really being the Load era albums and St. Anger, where Kirk deliberately varied his playing from what James did) but there's really only three rhythm guitar tracks going on at once. James doesn't like layering them because he thinks it makes the end result sound muddy, so instead it's usually left, center and right, all single-tracked.

Just realised basically metallica has a film crew backstage at every show and in the studio recording every album for pretty much the last 16 years.

Jeez. Thats a bit much. Have a bit of privacy lads.

Yeah, but Kirk could at least try on his solos.

On that topic, I'm really starting to think the whole "i lost my phone with all my ideas on it" thing is a fabrication. Judging by those videos, and his output over the past 8 years, he doesn't give all that many fucks and probably had nothing to contribute.

Didnt Kirk release a solo album or EP a few years ago or am I making that up?

edit.

After googling I am pretty sure I am totally making that up.

It's a solid album at least with good material, but the lyrics don't click for me the way Megadeth's Dystopia does.

Best regards,

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Finally had a chance to listen to the album.

Where the hell has this band been for the past 20 years? Spit Out The Bone is awesome, replayed it immediately.

I don't think he's done a memorable lead since AJFA, really. Shortest Straw is his best one.

I'm going through this right now and so far it's actually pretty solid. I thought Death Magnetic was good when it initially came out but then I realized all it was was better than St. Anger so I was hesitant (more like couldn't be bothered) to give this a go until now. I think modern Hetfield's voice is terrible and even ruins older songs when he plays live but here its actually not so bad. So, so far so good.

St anger and death magnetic cite every member as writers of the songs.
Was the writing process different than for hardwired now?

Probably not by much. I'm sure for Kirk for example just contributes the occasional riff and his solos. Most of everything else is James and Lars.

I thought DM had some good stuff on it.

A lot of the early albums were mainly Hetfield and Ulrich as well with only a couple of tracks having a third writer and the occasional one having all four members contributing. Even Mustaine got credit where it was due.

I didn't know Citi card members were able to buy presale tickets until yesterday. Luckily I have a Costco Citi card which qualifies. So I bought a general admission ticket for the 5/10 Baltimore show last night! I feel like I won the lottery. No stress, no codes, no scalpers.

For anyone who ordered tour tickets via the fanclub presale, they should be going out regularly now. I'm going to the June 11 show in Houston, and got mine last week.

Also, in certain cities they'll be opening pop-up stores two days before the shows so you can get any tour merchandise ahead of time.

Hours of operation are:

Friday 3PM-10PM
Saturday 10AM-10PM
Sunday 10AM-4PM

Wondering if a pop-up is coming to your city? Below is a list of all locations, specific addresses to come later. All stores will be open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the weekend of the show in that town.

June 02-04 - St. Louis
June 09-11 - Houston
June 16-18 - Chicago
July 07-09 - Atlanta
July 14-16 - Toronto
July 28-29 (Fri & Sat only) Los Angeles
August 04-06 - San Diego
August 11-13 -San Francisco

They also did live rehearsals last night on Facebook, including small snippets of Spit Out The Bone and Eye of the Beholder.

I did one of those "Standing by a principle no one cares about" type of things and didn't buy tickets because they were 115€ a piece. Already had them in the basket and everything, but I just can't bring myself to pay three digits for a concert (for a festival, yes). Tickets for the Death Magnetic tour were around 85€ if I remember correctly, so 30€ more now is just silly in my opinion. Meh, already seen them a couple of times anyway.

30 more after like 8 years doesn't seem that outlandish. Also look at the state of record sales, they need to make up for the difference somehow.

I've seen them twice, but my wife has never had the chance and I figure this might realistically be the last shot I get at seeing them live, so I just sucked it up and paid what they were asking. $135 a ticket I think, not GA but seats right off the stage.

At this point, I put more value on experiences than anything else and like I said, who knows when the next opportunity will arise? Plus I get to see my wife's reaction to possibly the best live act in the business.

Nice, enjoy it! I grew up in Chicago and miss it terribly. Would like to get back up there someday.

I did the WHIPLASH package and won SNAKEPIT passes through the Metclub contest! Giants Stadium this Sunday!
Hitting the NYC pop-up shop on Saturday, all day at the show (meals included!) on Sunday. Can't. Wait.
