So, I was thinking about this earlier today... If you took 8 tracks from DM and HSD, I bet you can make an album that would rival any of their output from the 80's.

For fun, let's give it a try:

Hmmm, I'll bite. Harder than I thought it would be. I dunno if any combinations of these could beat Master or Puppets though to be honest. That album is nigh untouchable.

1. The End of the Line
2. Atlas, Rise!
3. The Unforgiven III
4. Dream No More
5. Halo on Fire
6. All Nightmare Long
7. Suicide & Redemption
8. Spit Out the Bone

As a lifelong Metallica fan, it's still hard to get used to the Diezal amp tones. I can't help but think this album would have sounded better with a Mesa amp.

There are plenty of Mesa and Marshall amps on the album, just like all of their albums:

They have used a massive variety of gear in the studio since at least the black album.

I'd love to see people put together their 8 track (yes, make some tough decisions) load/reload. Loaded? The load? Deload?
I always wish Load ended up being the true double album it was going to be initially. Cut a few tracks off each of Load and Reload, get them down to about 10 tracks/an hour each, and have one giant double album called Load.

(Would drop Poor Twisted Me, Thorn Within, and Wasting My Hate from Load. Better Than You, Slither, and Attitude from Reload. Nothing particularly wrong with any of those songs but wouldn't miss any of them.)

Every day I seem to find a different song on this album that just hooks me.

Today it was halo on fire. Spent a couple of hours learning it on guitar. God the end of that song is incredible, especially the riff near the end solo where James is singing "Hello Darkness, say goodbye"

It's hilarious how much better the songs sound with AJFA's production

The guitar tone makes a huge difference.

Really? I thought that really only highlighted how awful the Justice production was. It really feels like it sucks all the life out of the songs, and that Spit Out the Bone version is a perfect example of that to me.

I definitely had this thought while listening to the album. They overdid the use of the staccato E5. Even tho it's been a staple, I still felt they used it instead of a better option here.
It's what I usually come up with when trying to write a thrash song, and I'm a horrible songwriter. Obviously, it's possible to turn it into some powerful riffs, but it's also the first thing you try to do. It's just a really easy way to connect two different riffs to each other, but it also sounds very low effort. So, like you said, it definitely sounds like a lack of a better option.
It might not matter to many listeners, but for me it's a pretty huge let down whenever they use it in a song. Especially since they used to be so good at making seamless transitions.

Starting to like Spit Out the Bone more now that I'm not expecting Battery style of thrash assault. At first I was disappointed because many were comparing this track to Battery and co. But now that I'm just expecting to hear more "basic one note" speed/thrash riffing I can appreciate it more.

It's just that when the most complex riff is something I could've accidentally played with the same accuracy when learning to play thrash it really is disappointing when expecting to hear something like Battery which took me lot of time to learn and I still can't play it fast with decent accuracy.

But yeah, now that I'm not expecting anything else, Spit Out the Bone sounds very good.

I've been pretty much ignoring Dream No More up until now. Pretty damn good song, I actually really like the lyrics, and holy shit the second chrous riff is beastly!

Late reply, but yeah, Halo on Fire has totally grabbed me as an easy favorite, especially the last couple minutes with the part you mention.

sorry saw your avatar and couldn't resist

Halo on Fire is fantastic! The only song I don't like (so far) is Here comes revenge, I love all the others, Murder One is massively underrated

Atlas Rise sounds like it would fit right in on Master of Puppets. And, I'm surprised so many dislike Am I Savage. Not the same tempo as the other tracks, but it's hard and got a good beat.

Only Kirk's solo sounded improved to me, although, that said, the riffs sounded a lot faster but maybe because it was a bit clearer.

Not bad. If the goal is to emulate the old albums then mine would be:

1. That Was Just Your Life
2. Atlas, Rise!
3. Dream No More
4. The Day That Never Comes
5. Moth Into Flame
6. Cyanide
7. Halo on Fire
8. Spit Out the Bone

You don't think I know about Megadeth? Come on man.

Don't like their later stuff that much though, they peaked with Rust in Peace.

RIP is their best album, but man they released so many good stuff since then. Even their last album, Distopia, from earlier this year, is fantastic

I gave that a shot a while ago and I was surprised how good it was. Overall, as a whole, it's very consistent. I love Poisonous Shadows in particular, highlight of the album for me.

See, it's the exact opposite for me. Everyone gives Metallica crap for trying to recapture their glories, but Megadeth has been phoning it in for years now. And this comes from a pretty big Megadeth fan.

Dystopia was nothing more than recycled crap over and over again with the same tired production values. At least Dave tried to sing again on a few songs, so I welcomed that. But Megadeth still hasn't even come close to releasing anything as good as The System Has Failed. That album was a true renaissance of the Megadeth sound, while still ushering in a newer approach.

"Now That We're Dead" is the song I most grew to like. Felt average at first but it's nice to listen too. Sadly, as much as most songs grew on me, "Murder One" is still bad.

Really? United Abominations was good and I loved Endgame but Thirteen was average and what I heard from Super Collider was awful.

Yeah I agree that The System Has Failed was amazing. And I think United Abominations was a disappointment after that. And apart from a song here and there I can't enjoy Thirteen and Super Collider. And Dystopia had way too many fillers as well.

But damn, Endgame is as good as The System Has Failed, if not even better. Just get rid of the last two tracks and it's a perfect modern Megadeth album.

However, I don't think you can really compare modern Megadeth albums with modern Metallica albums (Death Magnetic and Hardwired). The compositions are usually much tighter even on the worst modern Megadeth tracks than what they are on modern Metallica tracks.

And for the record, Death Magnetic was actually the first Metallica album where I began to understand the band and appreciate their early albums, and actually became a fan. Before hearing DM I thought the classic Metallica albums were way overrated. And hell, I think it even was Lars' drumming style that made it finally click for me :D People can say whatever they want about his technical skills but that dude can bring some power to the songs with his semi-chaotic use of cymbals. And he feels way more natural than that robot Shawn Drover ever felt in Megadeth.

But still, even at worst Megadeth usually puts out more solid songs than what Metallica does.

Wish Dave Mustaine didn't need the songs tuned down to sing to them. The lower tuning makes the riffs lose a bit of definition.

I actually can dig ManUNkind and Am I Savage? on HWTSD now

Which part? Lol.

I just couldn't stand Dystopia for the most part. I thought Kiko was going to be a breath of fresh air, and I prefer him over Broderick, but he still didn't blow me away. I'm just tired of Dave's penchant for syncopated riffs with him ranting/spitting over top of them. A song like 'Lying In State' would've been awesome had it not been done on every single album since TSHF. It was done better when it was 'This Day We Fight!'. 'The Emperor' is one of their more lame album closers. On top of all that, the album is insanely loud, containing the same sterile production that their albums have had since Andy Sneap stepped in for UA.

The album just does nothing for me. Everything decent on the album has been done on their past releases with better results. Of course, this is my opinion. I know a lot of people love it. But after the turd that was Super Collider, I was expecting to get my ass ripped. Dystopia was just another middle of the road record with hired guns.

The emperor is one of my favourite songs on Dystopia. I just like the riff, takes me back to the first half of rust in peace.. Polaris. I also really like 'bullet to the brain' for some weird reason. Poisonous shadows and Dystopia alone are worth the album existing tbh.

I feel like even if you like 'here comes revenge'.. it should still be pretty obvious why some people wouldn't like it.

Honestly I firmly believe that Dystopia is one of the best things they've ever done and probably the best since RIP. It has similarities to their older work but it always felt fresh to me.

You're not alone.

I agree that Dystopia is awesome, and you're probably right about it being the best thing since Rust but even that can only be achieved by getting fresh members into the band.

I've been a fan of Megadeth for 27yrs now and it always felt that Dave was trying to follow Metallicas output especially in the 90s releasing a few commercially styled albums but once Risk had been all but a distant memory it seemed like Megadeth were trying to get back on track with their style. End Game is a fantastic album in my ears, and almost like a So Far, So Good II but when I heard Super Collider I thought Dave had dropped and broken his lightning in a bottle. There's only two tracks Ilike on that, "Dancing in the Rain" and the Thin Lizzy cover "Cold Sweat". Then I heard Dystopia.

Some will say it's rubbish and recycling riffs we've heard before but so what? It lives up to Megadeths original style, speed and politically driven and that's when Megadeth were in their prime. And now Metallica have had two primo albums which wouldn't have sounded out of place if they'd came out after AJFA.
