I've seen trash cans with more charisma.
Yeah I have deep hatred for this wannabe Texan Ocelot. Liquid Ocelot was one of my favorite characters ever, even his voice was entertaining. Liquid wax the complete opposite in every way

Tekken 4 may be considered bad combat wise but I still love it for its story of all things (and OST). It added quite a few nuances to different characters that we just never saw again, or I've just missed. What even happened in regards to Nina and Steve?

He's been featured as core storyline and an important player in every Tekken since 3.

His personality really hasn't changed.

Really if anything you should be more bummed of how Paul Phoenix was a major player but has slowly turned into a joke character.
This was really the first character I thought of when clicking the thread, although quite a few characters with serious plot points became comic relief (Eddy, Lars) or simply sound the same plot in every game they popped up (Christie, always entering tournaments just to find where Eddy went). Not that I should expect much from the story but it would have been nice to have a bit more going for more of the cast.

Nina and Steve sort of more or less always had some link, and it is properly addressed in 7. Not that it matters.

Isaac Clarke in Dead Space

Went from silent protagonist which I appreciated greatly to hallucinating guy in the second. He got a personality which wasn't grating.. untill Dead Space 3 happened. He turned into a love sick asshole talking shit with Carver.

And while I still think its funny, Wesker in RE 5 turned straight up into a comicbook villain. And obsessed by Chris Redfield. Chriiiiiiiisssss

Uncharted 4 Nathan Drake.

Goes from gifted-but-everyman plunderer to fated hero from family of renown archaeologists whose mother orchestrated all his past adventures.
Wait that's the plot of uncharted?

What kind of twist is thst??? Lol

Cast of Chrono Trigger in Chrono Cross.

Why were they ruined? Just because they were written out from the story does not mean they're ruined. In fact, what we know about Luca in Cross actually reinforced her character as a selfless girl.

Eddy. :(

From having a legit story arc of getting revenge on Kazuya over several games to... Getting trolled and punched in the dick by Lucky fucking Chloe in Tekken 7, a character I didn't express outrage towards when she was first revealed.

I hate her now... But I like playing as her, I'm so conflicted.

It's worth pointing out that for each and every single character in MGS5 whom has appeared in a previous game, their portrayal in MGS5 is their absolute worst.

Big Boss - Went to being nearly a mute protagonist. And even if you take the ending twist into account, the "true" Big Boss at the end is barely a character at all.

Ocelot - Absolute garbage. He looks completely different, sounds compeltely different, and acts completely different. And you can't argue he changed over time, as his portrayal in MGS3 was incredibly similar to his portrayal in MGS1, 2, and 4.

Master Miller - Went from a likeable, cheeky guy in Peace Walker, to being an uninteresting, angst-ridden dick.

Huey - Went from being a good guy who opposed nuclear weapons to a backstabbing piece of shit who murdered his own wife whom he adored in the previous game.

Liquid Snake - Did he even speak at all? Damned if I remember. He contributed absolutely nothing to the plot whatsoever except an unfinished cliffhanger.

Psycho Mantis - Another mute. Was present simply to be a plot tool. Had zero characterisation whatsoever.

Volgin - Same as Psycho Mantis.

Paz - I have no clue why this game portrayed her as a sympathetic, sweetheart character. Her true colours were revealed at the end of Peace Walker.

Zero - Bland. Not a patch on his MGS3 portrayal, where he was likeable. True, in MGS4, he's just a geriatric in a wheelchair that doesn't move or talk, but at least his death in that drew upon how likeable he was in MGS3 to elicit an emotional moment.

Mentioned it before but I dislike Tekken's story because it seems like so many key characters flip and flop between morality and factions to an extreme and arbritary way.

Having looked into her a bit more, I find it amusing that the secret that they had alluded to regarding Lucky Chloe following her reveal apparently turned out to be that she's a much worse person compared to her cutesy persona.

Yeah, for me MGSV specifically was "Remember all these characters you liked in Peace Walker? Well you're gonna hate them now!"

Not when they want to keep pushing Lars and Alisa.

Like I seriously can't believe those two are still getting top-billing. At least they're not as bad as the twins in Soul Calibur.

They get top billing because you got people like me who love them.

Metal Gear and Resident Evil for me, yikes. Between games they manage to destroy any sense of cool or interesting to their some of their best iterations, seemingly continuously, forever inching toward awful.

I'm incredibly surprised no-one has mentioned what Rare did to Joanna Dark in Perfect Dark Zero.

Strong, sophisticated and intelligent British, brunette woman turned into a ditzy, childish, unlikable American redhead.

I understand that it was a prequel, but what they changed her into absolutely destroyed the character, to the point that literally no traits matched her own from the first game and I just found the whole thing unforgivable.

Not to mention the entire game in general. What on earth were they thinking???

Samus going from formidable, silent, cool and collected bounty hunter to overtly sexualized whiney porn barbie immediately came to mind.

The kind of twist that completely goes against the literal tagline of the series, "Greatness from small beginnings."
Drake is literally the chosen one of archaeologists.

People say Ocelot was boring, but MGS5 is the only time that he is not playing a double/triple agent. Ocelot idolizes Big Boss and actually wanted to work for him.

I honestly feel like Cloud was also ruined in Crisis Core. The whole ending with him and Zack with Zack giving his lasts words to Cloud telling him to "live for me"...
That whole thing really contradicts Cloud building up his image of pretending to be Zack; Since he did it as he was in a weak state combining the stories he heard from Zack to his memories.
Honestly, post-FF7 has been terrible in character development for Cloud...

He is still lacking charismatic traits that can still exist even when he's not villainous, which is a huge problem.

And on the sixth day the LORD David Bowie created man and woman in His image. And he saw that it was good. On the seventh day the LORD created videogames so that He might take the bloody day off for once.
MGS2 Solid Snake to boring ass almost mute Old Snake (MGS4) is the biggest drop in quality I've seen.

Solidus Snake in MGS4 was also earth shatteringly shit, how they treated such a great character. And Liquid Ocelot not being either Ocelot or Liquid in a sense (just Ocelot pretending to be Liquid, so you get neither the best of either character) in MGS4 was also incredibly lame. Then in MGSV he's even worse, he's just a nothing character.

MGS1 Naomi to MGS4 drama queen Naomi was also lame.
Agreed with all this. MGS deals out character assassinations like nobody's business.

Cloud in FFVII went from a goofball who is only pretending to be cool to a boring, joyless loser in all future depictions of him.

While I won't say he's perfect in AC (though I actually do like AC Cloud). I can honestly say I never, ever read him as a goofball. I read him an a bit of tryhard who, ultimately, was extremely insecure but came to terms with who he really was over the course of the game. That said, until he gets to that point he always seemed angsty and overly disconnected in attempt to be as cool or w/e as Zack.

So having always seen him as a sort of self doubting, insecure character, I could see him regress back to that even after the events of VII.

As for my personal answer to the topic, it's probably be Dante. And DmC isn't even the only offender. His character took a drastic downturn in 2 to the point where he was basically a nothing character. 3 was better, though I still didn't like him as much as I did in 1 and 4 made him GOAT. Then after that roller coaster you got DmC which just made him an insufferable douchebag.

Worse than Aya, was Kunihiko Maeda in The 3rd Birthday. They changed him from a dorky scientist friend who earnestly helps out wherever he can to a creepo who constantly pervs out over Aya.

This may be difficult to believe for people who only played Saints Row 4, but in Saints Row 2 Johnny Gat was just a guy in a violent street gang. He was on death row, someone else had to bust him out, he got stabbed, someone else had to get him to the hospital, his girlfriend died, a dude interrupted her funeral and Gat buried him alive in a scene that wasn't played for laughs in any way, that sort of thing. Occasionally he also got shit done because he was pretty competent in the field of straightforward gun violence. And perhaps most crucially of all, get this: At no point did anybody talk about what a fucking awesome badass Johnny Gat is or wonder where Johnny Gat was when he wasn't present.

It's just fucking abysmal what they did to him. They turned him into Poochie. Just a complete nothing character who doesn't do anything of significance while everyone continues to insist that, no, actually he is really cool and awesome and badass, honest, you'll just have to take our word for it, we really wish he was here now. And later he is here now and he doesn't do anything of any significance, and his only noteworthy character moment is a callback to his girlfriend's death in Saints Row 2 and they even turned that into a fucking Streets of Rage reference.

I never cared that much for SR2 gameplay-wise or even story-wise really, but yeah - I agree with you that they made Johnny Gat into a Poochie type character in the later versions. At some point the game just inflated the "awesomeness" that is "Johnny Gat," and I'm pretty sure the first time I experienced it I was like "Who's this guy, again?"

It felt like a gaming version of putting out a video on YouTube and prematurely calling it a "viral" video.
