Has Sony lost its technical edge this generation?

Absolutely. Likely multiple drivers - multiplatform targets & potential tard sku next Gen ala Xbox Series S. Exclusives used to be a showcase of the brands dedication to quality and technology, a flagship showcase. This is no longer the priority at Sony.

And nobody is going to spend Rockstar money to target multiple skus with such quality.

have been plenty of next gen looking games released this gen.
And most of them have ass IQ and frame rate problems. Because they are actually next gen (PS6) features that can't run properly on many scenarios. Silent Hill f is doing ok with features, framerate and IQ with 2 enemies in a corridor. Everywhere else they haven't.

I'm not defending those who say that a PS4 Remake is a valid next gen title, but this generation is about 60fps and streaming assets. Everything else is far from the capabilities of a 12 TF RDNA 2 machine. So it actually makes a lot of sense keeping almost everything from the previous generation until more capable nVidia-like machines are out.

Did I even praise MS he says, just before praising MS 😂.

Hellblade 2 best looking game of the Gen. Sure mate, sure. Low resolution corridor with black bars that runs on Series S. Some people see some good textures and modeling in 2 characters on screen and think that's the pinnacle of high tech.

Fact is Sony and some Ubi games have been been among the best this gen. Stellar Blade, Horizon Forbidden West, Spiderman 2, Astro Bot, Demons Souls, Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Ratchet and Clank Rift, all among the best this Gen.
Its pretty sad that you cant see beyond your console fanboyism. I literally said, while Microsoft hasnt been great, it still delivered graphics tech beyond Sony's best. I honestly despise Microsoft due to its loathsome anti consumer/industry history and if you told me at launch that Microsoft would match let alone outcompete Sony devs in graphics I would laugh at your face but here we are. The fact that they delivered better tech than Sony, which shat on them the past 2 gens, is the point that is damning. I don't care if it uses UE5 or stock assets, the fact is that it is the best showcase of sheer graphics fidelity and details in a game on display with geometry levels and texture detail that is unmatched with amazing lighting, shadowing aswell . I wonder if you had that same energy when the order launched on ps4 or Detroit become human? Do you really not see the irony here? You just dissed on the game running on the series S as an insult and yet you have been praising the Sony games a decent majority of which run on a damn ps4 as brilliant.

Fact of the matter is third party devs and some rare Microsoft devs have been the best of this gen. Sony has released decent looking to good looking games, most with clear ps4 roots, but none have been in the conversation for the best of this gen. The fact that the launch games Forbidden West ( a cross gen game), Demon's Souls and Ratchet all launch games are the best showcases available on the ps5 tells you all you need to know about Sonys first parties ability and ambition in pushing tech this gen,

Games that run on PS4 can't be brilliant? What idiocy is this? Barely playable garbage like hellblade is brilliant instead?

No they do not. ive done this with you before. if you stick with 30 fps most UE5, Snowdrop, Anvil, RE engine, and Northlight engine games average out at 1440p 30 fps reconstructed to 4k. basically the norm on the PS4 Pro last gen.

people need to simply stop playing these games at 60 fps. ive done it all gen. they are not bad at all.

I just tried Forbidden West after spending some time with AC Shadows and boy is the gap big. The lighting and shadows in FW are horrendous compared to Shadows.

You really dont see the double standards here....you said it runs on the series S a next gen console, albeit weaker but damn ahead of the ps4 as an insult claiming its unimpressive since its designed to scale down to run on the Series S making it technically unimpressive in some way, and yet you tout the horn for ps4 games on the ps5 not as an insult but as if its a great thing. Also how is hellblade unplayable garbage? It has a solid 30fps mode and now even a consistent performance mode.

Ps4 games can be brilliant as games no doubt and are very critically acclaimed, holistically, but ps4 games cannot be put in the category of best of tech and fidelity in the next gen....I hope you can understand that concept. Some ps4 games can look impressive in parts, but when you start comparing them to next gen games the discrepancies become clear, especially in terms of geometric detail, streaming and lod/draw distance.

RE engine runs just fine on a base PS5 on any mode. Everything from Sony do as well. Shadows have acceptable IQ at 30fps. Wukong looks ass even at 30. As you've said, we've been through this.

The thing is 30fps is too beg of a sacrifice when you can double the responsiveness. Up until 2016 yeah, consoles didn't have many options there. But we've been on the 60 fps club since then and going back to PS3 performance is hard after 9 years of moving the camera and maintaining the detail. Base consoles are not designed for next gen features. Only the Pro is.

I know, but only in the 30fps mode. I'm comparing max settings vs max settings.

Then why bring this to this thread? We already know a beefy PC can have the last bells and whistles, but why Sony, which primary market is console, should have that features? Is like asking why GoW 2018 didn't have raytracing. Did Sony lost their technical edge back in the PS4 era? Why didn't Infamous 2 use PBR? Why Yotei doesn't use RTGI? Because it's the console market.

AC Shadows is also on PlayStation and has RTGI in its 60fps mode on the Pro. Besides, Sony now ports their games to PC, to it's absolutely fair game to compare the best version of both games.
Wow so you're comparing a almost 4 year old crossgen game with a current gen only game. nice.
Less than 3 years separate these games and Forbidden West is still considered among the best-looking PS5 game by many if not the best. It has since been left in the dust

The Pro has current day RT capabilities and an upscaler that doesn't shit the bed. It's not fair to bring it up in a feature comparison (in power is fair game since it's barely better). Even with Sony stupidly porting games to PC their main market are still consoles.

Is considered one of the best looking PS5 games due to unmatched image quality and I believe that's going to be the case for a long time.

Only console gamers would brag about Forbidden West being "best graphics this gen", a 3 year old Cross Gen game that is really showing its cross genness and age if you don't have fanboy goggles on.

Btw AC Shadows 60 fps with rtgi isn't as impressive when you realize its 1080p OUTPUT resolution

This is a thread about graphics and whether Sony has lost their technical edge. In what world are games rooted in ps4 tech "brilliant" in terms of Sony staying at the forefront of tech? Their games do not stack up to games using the latest lighting techniques with dense geometry and detail.

Ive been on the 60 fps club since 2003 when i built my first PC. I am primarily a console gamer but every generation around the half way mark i switch to PC to get my 60 fps fix. Especially since games get far more complex late gen and i want to play them at 60. if thats what you want, buy a PC like the rest of us. they are not that expensive anymore.

The price of 60 fps on consoles is this. I dont want it. Nobody wants it.

The 40fps balanced mode have RTGI too and works with the same assets as quality mode (except average DRS). I know a 120hz TV is required, but it's still a technological reference for the game (and console hardware ) in question.

This.

IQ in 30fps and even 40fps modes is usually more than decent in all those games and graphics engines on consoles. In fact, IQ in 60fps modes is often also decent, and the overall visual cutoff in quality mode is what gives people the opposite impression because they confuse a drop in image quality with what really is a drop in overall visual quality.

PS: Add in a lot of people playing on TVs that are outdated compared to consoles.

All that Series S hysteria and the Xbox games were clearly not held back by the series S. pretty much every MS next gen exclusive has targeted 1440p 30 fps on the XSX while the PS5 exclusives have targeted native 4k 30 fps. As if they are targeting some non-existent series s version.

The problem with MS this gen has been virtually every game they've released has been mid to straight up bad. While Sony first party have consistently produced good to great games. Albeit a generation behind in terms of tech. Which is why the tech in MS games gets overlooked. Ive been very impressed by the lighting and asset quality in Starfield, Avowed, Hellblade 2, and Forza 8. Fable looks absolutely stunning too.

Super late to this thread because I was busy drooling over Ghost of Yotei's artistic beauty.

But I actually agree. Sony isn't at the technical edge. They might still be leading in fantastic art, but not tech. And that's fine. Why is this some horse race where Sony should always lead/win? Competition is good and at the moment, 3rd parties are kicking their ass. That's great! And thanks to current gen consoles being so far behind the curve in capabilities, Sony is left with two choices. Either focus on 30 fps games to push the tech to the limits and get rid of the 60 fps mode or significantly compromise it, or focus on older tech that scales well, giving excellent IQ and performance across the 2 modes that have become a staple of this generation.

Most studios seem to have chosen the latter. Is that the best choice? I don't know, to be honest. On the one hand I would love to see them push rendering forward, but on the other, I've actually held back on any game where the pro 30 fps quality mode can run at 60 by sheer brute force on PS6. Spider man 2 and elden ring come to mind. So personally, I'd rather they stay away from the technical edge so that I feel like playing something at all for the next few years. I'm sure they'll catch up once the PS6 catches up on cutting edge RT, neural rendering, HW accelerated virtual geometry etc. I don't believe in the "lazy dev" strawman. They still release top tier games with fewer bugs (on console at least) than most of their counterparts. If they were truly lazy, it will show in other aspects too.

You are arguing with someone that will never think outside: "You don't like something from brand Y? Then you clearly must be a fanboy of brand Z!".

Have you seen how Forbidden West looked at launch and few months after in 60fps mode? GARBAGE (timestamped):

thats nonsense. you can buy a GPU 2x more powerful than the ps5 for like $400. the 7800xt was $500 like 2 years ago. no one is telling you to buy overpriced nvidia cards. you can go and buy a cheap $200 cpu and a $400 GPU and get a much better pc than the pro.

i built PCs for a $1000 back in 2003, 2011 to play ps2 then ps3 games at double the resolution and fps. Then bought a $1,400 to play PS4 games at double the framerate and 4x the resolution. you can easily do double the resolution and the framerate for $1000 today. you are just being stubborn.

Stay safe over there.

I never said that I don't want a Pro, I always said that it's overpriced and too weak - NONTHING CHANGED since then (Pro is even more expensive in USA).
I got it much below MSRP, hahaha.

You didn't answer to my post, Horizon only had good IQ in 30fps mode. That "clean IQ in 60fps mode" wasn't the case with that game, despite it not using any RT, virtualized geometry or virtualized shadows...

Only if you factor in DLSS when making comparisons. Say, you run the game at 1440p DLSS Performance on a 5060 Ti vs 1440p FSR with a 1080p internal res. The 5060 Ti should come close to doubling the PS5 performance while retaining a comparable, if not better IQ.

In raw performance though, no. You need a 5070 to double the PS5 performance or a 4070S, but those are discontinued. No system with a $400 GPU will double what the PS5 gives you.

yep. Horizon FW was the poster child for bad IQ bad at launch but people conveniently forgot all about it. GG literally took 5 months and had to rebuild their entire reconstruction system to fix the foliage shimmering.

Most studios seem to have chosen the latter. Is that the best choice? I don't know, to be honest.
You do know. You play games at 30 fps and then next gen you play those same games remastered at 60 fps. You did this with MGS3 which got a 60 fps remaster on the PS3. Then you did with the uncharted which got a 60 fps remaster on the PS4. And then again when uncharted 4 got a 60 fps remaster on the PS5. So why do you want Uncharted 5 to look like Uncharted 4 just so you can play it at 60 fps on day one? Didnt you spend $500 on a next gen console? Didnt you pay $70 for this next gen game? Dont you want your money to go into a next gen experience?

Whats next? PS6 games that finally look like PS5 games but run at 60? We are probably looking at a $750 console in 2028-2034 that makes games look like they shouldve looked in 2020?

I dont understand how this is everyone's first generation. We are in gen 9. we've done this 9 times already. Sony is doing something never been done before. An entire generation of cross gen looking games. This is unacceptable. And an easy thing to criticize them for. This is really not that complicated.

Curious where you stand on this. If there was RTGI at 30 fps for FW, looking somewhere between the left and right image (more right leaning than left) in IQ but with much better lighting, and 60 fps looked like the right and you had a base PS5, which mode would you play?

If we're getting a near PS5 level handheld next gen then it's going to be the new baseline and yes, this is exactly what I expect for next generation. This is what a lot of people have been saying for a while.

Here are some screenshots of the compromised xsx version of Wukong btw. It looks even better on PS5. But people will have you believe next gen games have bad IQ on consoles and we must stick with last gen games for the entire generation.

Do people seriously want to go back to 30fps?! What's next slavery...
every single current gen game this gen has a 60 fps mode. even games that shipped at just 30 fps like starfield and hellblade 2 got a 60 fps patch after launch.

no one is forcing you to play at 30 fps. but if you want 60 fps and high resolution, PCs are always there for you. you get what you pay for.

Good question.

IQ in 30fps mode was 4K pristine, but that wasn't enough to convince me to play in 30fps, but with RTGI? Who knows, I forced myself to play 30fps in Callisto Protocol because this mode had RT.

But Horizon fucks up the narrative about: "PS5 games have good IQ in 60fps modes thanks to simpler graphics", it didn't look much better than many UE5 games in this aspect even few months after launch.
