Hatsune Miku appearing on Letterman tonight

I watched like 1 minute of it without audio and had to turn it of. No thank you Japan. Thank god no one saw me watching it.

I'll agree with this. :(

I don't hate Miku, so I really wanted to like this, but man was it awful sounding on air. Holographic effect is cool, though. That technology is going to be used in really interesting ways in the future (beyond reviving dead pop stars, of course).

I don't know why you guys find here cute. Her outfit and proportions were unsettling, I couldn't directly look at her. At least the instruments were okay.

Nah, I agree. Hatsune Miku songs in English don't work the best. I mean, everyone knows she's from Japan anyway, so they should have just let her sing the song in Japanese.

Still, a few of her English songs were done better, such as Tell Your World [livetune]. Still highly inferior to the Japanese version, though.

This made me pretty uncomfortable and I like Miku. It was one of those situations where you get embarrassed even though you're the only one in the room.

Shes super cute and has dozens of versions. Also many many fan created outfits and designs and just aaaaaahhhhhhhh I love her *bounces

When I say anime I mean "that weird Japanese stuff that confuses and/or disturbs people".

And Vocaloid not getting an anime is the weirdest shit. That shit would sell like hotcakes.

I'd say it's based on a licensing issue or something, but Black Rock Shooter got an anime, so no clue what the hold up is with Miku. Shit is massive.

Yeah, at least I can recognize the words there as English, even if the cadence is way off. Japanese version of that song is one of the few Miku tracks I know, and I feel like the English edition loses some of the semi-annoying catchiness of that tune.

but it's 2014 and she doesn't even facial expressions. it looks like a selection of canned animations chosen from some generic set.

this country has already seen hologram tupac, there's no going back.

Wow that was awkward. I could just read Letterman's mind after that performance. Just like 99.99% of American's watching, he doesn't get the appeal of a computerized anime character singing a "live" performance.

Yeah, it doesn't flow as well in English. One of the better displays of her in English, but still not exactly a positive. Maybe with time they'll get better, I'm not sure.

Wait, that was English? O_o
As hard as it is to believe, yes it was.

It seems like you own a lot of Anime. I'm not around here a lot, but it would seem like you actually do.

Prop to you.

yeah I have an ever growing collection of it. Keeps me feeling young and happy and less stressed.

Can someone explain what she "is"?

Yamaha created a voice synthesizing program called vocaloid and created Miku to market it with. Many other vocaloids exist both official and unofficial but Miku remains by far the most popular one. There are still regular figurine releases of her, worldwide hologram concerts, countless fanarts and songs, collectibles, even racing sponsorship.

Twitter is pretty preeeetty great right now.

Just saw the YouTube vid. 2 wahjah
You'll regret this when the apocalypse goes down

it'll be revealed Gaga is our savior and she was simply testing our faith all this time.

You'll be left behind, Beerman462. Left with Bieber

I'm not familiar with the breadth of vocaloid stuff out there, has there been any of use of it in music that isn't techno or electronic?

I literally got through 1:30 before I couldn't watch anymore. I love Hatsune Miku, but they did my girl dirty on national television. If they had done Freely Tomorrow, I guarantee they would have had people dancing in their seats.

Seeing Letterman wave at Miku got me thinking that someday this stuff will be mixed with more animations, basic AI, cameras and Google style voice recognition so these holograms can have some basic interactions with humans. I think my brain will just quit when that happens.

Yes, if we arent counting the fact their voices sound electronic inherently as making the song have hints of it.

I should have checked out that World End Dancehall link before I made that last post. That was more of the Japan buttrock type of stuff that I'm more familiar with (from games). You're right that their voices lend to any song a hint of electronic. I guess they just can't help it being the way it is...yet.
