I was hoping this would happen!
60FPS Diva with much better visuals. I am excite...now if only I could get off my ass and finish S&SP ALL 'ing all of Project Mirai.

As an absolute Hatsune Miku noob, this looks like the perfect point to get into the series. But I am curious about the quality of this as a rhythm game (gameplay, difficulty, etc), can you guys and girls give your opinions on it?

I started on Parappa the Rapper on the original PlayStation, going through all kinds of stuff like Donkey Konga, Guitar Hero III, Ouendan, Elite Beat Agents, Rhythm Tengoku and probably a few others I'm not remembering at the moment. This month I got Rhythm Paradise Megamix on the 3DS and got reminded of how much I missed playing this kind of game. It's certainly the best way to waste time while commuting to work!

And as a little side question, is the DLC worth it? I think it's likely that it comes to the West as well, but what would we be losing if it doesn't?

Project Diva F/F 2nd being better starting points already got brought up, so I'll just say that the series is fantastic.
except for Project Diva X

Future Tone is easily the hardest game in the series, while the others are challenging but not absurdly so. F series Extreme difficulty charts tend to just be fun and not infuriating.

One of F's toughest songs
A total BS song in Future Tone

So, definitely give F or F 2nd a go if you can. FT can come later.

It's too bad they didn't make this announcement 2 weeks ago, before I spent $40 on the Colorful Sound pack for the Japanese version. I would have held out for this, but too late now. I'll just be sticking to the Japanese version.

Personally I'd recommend the F series of games for newcomers to the series if they're new or relatively new to rhythm games. The difficulty level in FT is higher than the F games plus I've found there are more issues with lag in FT also. F2nd should be cheapish on eBay so I'd go with that.

For comparison, here is the same song on extreme in Future Tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV5Rsp8V-A8

It is *much* harder, but it's not impossible and you can use practice mode as much as you like to learn songs and the best way to play them without the risk of failing. I personally find FT more fun than any of the other Miku games, and part of the reason for that is how intense it gets on harder difficulties - practicing a song over and over and finally nailing it is one of the best feelings, especially if you'd looked at it before and deemed it impossible!

Actually, the challenge part is one of the reasons why I'm looking forward to this one compared to previous Project Diva games. I don't mind not having extras like dating, room building and so on, I think that having a gigantic playlist is a pretty good trade-off to make up for that. All I care for is gameplay, while the girlfriend loves dressing them up in random cute outfits, so it's a win-win situation :^)

I want to thank everyone that provided me with the feedback, looks like Miku fans really know their stuff haha

I am somewhat concerned about the "lag" on certain tracks though... I had the same thing happening on certain songs while playing Dance Dance Revolution S on the iPhone and it can really take you out of the experience. I assume they might patch out some issues with this release... Did they keep parity between the US and JPN versions Project Diva X regarding patching and DLC? That would at give us a little assurance that they won't just release the game and call it a day.

By the way, just out of curiosity's sake: What's up with all the hate for Project Diva X? I got the impression that the track selection is a bit weak, but is the game really that terrible? Can't say since I've never played it, but I've been wondering about the reasons behind that.

F 2nd and X have had perfect DLC parity - it only really mattered for the massive year-long DLC campaign that F 2nd had, though. X has very little DLC.

With X, the big problem was artificially dragging out gameplay by adding a story mode that was complete fluff. Outfits and outfit parts were also locked behind random drops instead of the usual unlock system.

Also, people are generally down on the gameplay videos being downgraded to stage performances only, and edit mode being severely cut back to remove support for custom music.

wow.

so miku is popular in US now?

Yeah, seems that anime and Japanese culture in general is much more mainstream in the US nowadays than it was back in the day when I first was starting to get into it.

Anyways, really excited to see this being officially confirmed. Wish there was a physical version to go alongside all my other physical Miku games, but ahh well. Still getting day one.

My journey sounds a lot like yours. I've been playing rhythm games since they existed, and in the early days gravitated toward everything from Parappa to Konami's Bemami stuff to anything else that was out there. Some of my favorite games over time have been Lammy, Rhythm Tengoku, Ouendan, Bust a Groove, Guitaroo Man, and ParaPara Paradise—so we seem to share a lot of similar likes.

I can easily say that the Project Diva series is one of my favorites, but that's in part because I'm also into the whole Vocaloid scene. If you're only going to be touching games that came out in the US, then—even with my limited playing of it so far—I think Future Tone is absolutely the best place to jump in. If I can give you any recommendation, it's to stay away from the other Project Diva games that have been localized. They're fine if you've played the other games and want something new, but in the first game that was brought over, they introduced a new note type—Stars—that were a gigantic mistake. (Some PD fans will disagree—they're wrong.) Seriously, those notes are garbage, and they ruined any songs they were in for me as someone who has spent so many years loving the "hit the note on the timing" style of rhythm game.

Future Tone is far and away the most excited I've been for the series since Project Diva Extend, which was the final PSP release (and still the best game up to this point in my mind, barring what I fully end up thinking of Future Tone).

Excited for this! I have played f 2nd and Project Mirai Dx and couldn't wait for this to get released over here. I skipped out on Project Diva X because I thought it didn't have much value for what it costs, but this has exceeded my expectations. 200+ songs for $54 is really great value.

What you said kind of reminds me of the spinning wheel thingy from Ouendan / Elite Beat Agents, I've never liked that mechanic one bit (especially since it is a pretty good way to ruin the DS touch-screen, even with a screen cover that always made me a bit nervous). I think that the "press a random note as many times as you can" really shouldn't be in this kind of game, I find it neither skillful nor fun... Except for Donkey Konga of course, destroying those bongos never stops feeling amazing haha

By the way, any impressions on the Season Pass for this one?

Oh damn , i can get double 100% trophies then ?
Excellent.

I'll never understand the appeal of the "glasses" song.
I just can't ..and i don't dislike glasses but this song does nothing to me.

Luka is my favorite vocaloid, I have a thing for women in glasses, and my favorite type of music is deep house (which I'd consider Megane a more 'pop' take on it)... easy to understand the appeal. I also love Luka Luka Night Fever though!
