Have you actively eliminated words from your daily usage?

I refrain saying gay, faggot, nigga, bitches and been trying to politically correct myself the past few years.
I censor myself where I feel it's appropriate to do such or where it's expected of me.
Pretty much on how I feel though shit talking only happens between my best friends and I.
Can't forget the fighting games streams as well.

Just "bitch." When you are trying to convey how irrational, mean, stupid and pain assholish a person it serves no reason to point out they are also female. If anything it kind of weakens your position. Just describe the asshole as an ashole, not a female one.

I've been trying to stop swearing completely. It's been tough and I still do it and even type out words on here or elsewhere without really thinking about it. As a teenager I was really bad about it but have definitely improved and am working towards stopping for good.

I've removed using the word "God" in a manner that isn't in reference to Him. So I don't say things such as "God damn it" or "oh my god".

I've been recently working on removing 'like' from every my day use. It's shocking how much I use it now that I have started evaluating what I say.

After I started habitually using fuck, shit, etc. I was getting angier and less able to express myself. Not to mention that language really is juvenile and classless which is how I don't want to appear to 90% of the people I speak with on a daily basis.

Yeah. All words that are rooted in systems of oppression. I don't use faggot, gay, or queer as pejoratives, nor bitch, pussy, or cunt. I don't say lame or retarded. I avoid saying racist shit. Some people I hang out with feel that saying "that sucks" is based in homophobia, and while I have my doubts, I take their feelings into consideration and don't say it around them. Those are just a few examples.

And sometimes I just avoid saying certain things out of respect. I try not to say "god damn it" or "jesus christ" around my Christian friends, for example.

Over the past several years, I've eliminated virtually all profanities, save damn, from my vocabulary. Even that is slowly being replaced by darn. I think I'm turning into my grandfather.

Yeah, gay and faggot.

Yeah this. I moved to New Zealand from a non-english speaking country during high school, and everyone used these words so I started using them (well I never really used faggot but gay wasn't uncommon) as well since I was learning the language at that time. However, after growing up a bit and learning the language better, it just occured to me that using these words the way most people use them is just completely retarded. How can an object or a situation be gay? That doesn't make any sense and just reeks of latent homophobia.

I don't say many offensive words apart from fuck, bitch, and shit (along with the occasional asshole). I've been trying to cut down on retarded though. I only ever say it due to habit and when I'm frustrated so I'm sure I'll eventually stop if I put effort into not saying it.

I'm also trying to avoid using acronyms like omg, lmao, or lol in texts because it makes me sound like a 13 year old. I'll occasionally use them ironically but beyond that I haven't used them that much.

i trim my vocabulary every day. i stay far the fuck away from ten-dollar words; i like to think and speak simply.

Can I use this thread to ask what does 'cotdamn' mean? I've seen in on GAF a few times and it looks like a pretty stupid word.

I used to swear a lot (in spanish). I cursed like a sailor, all the time, anywhere, everywhere. I started to forget when I shouldn't do it. One day I was in a class, the teacher asked me something, I answered her with some bad words and I didn't realize until later. So yeah, I've eliminated a good amount of words, even if that means that now I sound so fucking proper and boring.

Absolutely. For instance, I don't think I've used "gay" as a derogatory term since high school. I actively avoid doing it. I never, EVER say "faggot" either. Or the n-word. Or cunt.

I never used any of those because the people I hated in junior high used those a lot as derogatory terms, same goes to all the racial slurs, I just learned not to use them.

I almost never swear. It's not a conscious decision - I just never really started to do it.

I'm guilty of using "extreme" words to describe things, though. Amazing, incredible, and so on. Should try to tone that down.

Gay and faggot were completely cut from my vocabulary at around age 21, as most others have listed. I've actually recently been trying to cut "gypped", as someone on GAF pointed out the obvious derogatory reference to gypsies.

I (mostly) eliminated most curse words (fuck, shit) and name-callings (fag, nigger, retard) out of my daily usage. When you are a teenager you just use them, because everyone else your age does, too.
But now I just find it stupid to insult someone. It just shows that you don't know how to argue and need to use an insult to keep going in a "conversation". If I insult someone, I just call them stupid, if they did something stupid.

Yeah. Been working on removing slurs as much as possible, as others have said.
I never really used them that often to begin with so might as well remove those type of words all together.

Somewhat on topic. I also tend to mix in and "invent" (albeit silly) words. I also mix up my accent from time to time.
I have no idea why. Maybe because i find talking boring. Well, verbal communication at least.
It's just noise 90% of the time.

What's wrong with cunt ? Calling someone a fucking cunt is the most powerful insult.

I still use gay if something is bad I dunno I don't have anything against gay people, but everyone around here uses it so it's kind of hard to stop saying it.

I feel differently from GAF admin on 'cunt', but your argument is a bit flawed. Nigger is a hugely powerful insult and you refrain from using that. Think about why words are insults, I guess.

Edit: Actually, I have just assumed you don't use nigger. Well. Maybe I need to stop hanging around such civilised people LOL

I cant say bi*** anymore cos aparently it means im a potential rapist if I do so. Also, "God" and gay.

Every day I wake up and think, "I'm going to not swear today" and then I'll just find myself absentmindedly calling someone a fuckhole or something as I'm driving to work. Other days I wonder if I can go an entire day without talking to another person, but someone always has to mess it up and strike up a conversation with me.

Epic.

Also had to give up cunt after I called my dad it during a very heated fight and he got so upset he wanted to walk out. He's 6 inches taller and twice my weight fwiw. I felt so bad :(

Completely dropped "gay" & "faggot" in online as well as off line very quickly after joining neogaf. Also dropped "nigga" which was used pretty heavily due to environment and friends in high school. I'm trying to drop curse words like fuck n stuff as well both online and offline.

We should start a NoFap for swears. So like a swear jar, except we fabricate stories of increasing our muscle mass two fold and becoming a sexual dynamo on the back of a few extra pennies.

How DOES one remove a word from their vocab? Genuinely curious as to what deterrents people used on themselves.
Note to self: "Hey, GungHo, you know you sound like a real asshole when you casually say 'retarded', so don't do that."

It's the same filter I use to not call my clients "dipshits" when they completely ignore documented controls.

You just become a "big kid" and learn not to run off at the mouth.

I censor myself, yes, but when alone or with close friends anything and everything goes. The one thing I make sure I never immitate is people saying "you know" every other word. It's a giant turn off in terms of conversation.

I used to casually throw around the phrases "that's retarded" and "that's gay" but now I don't use either even in my daily life. I'll never drop "bitch" completely, but I use it sparingly.

in britain there is a national scheme to triple our cunt output to capitalize on international shortages. we're the number one cunt exporter in the world and the word just doesn't have the lobbying strength it needs in some of the less enlightened countries, so we're beginning to feel the bite.

the banning of cunt on gaf is actually keeping britain in recession.
