If there were any doubt as to just how toxic sectarian politics has become in the Middle East, the latest statement from the leader of the Iran-backed Lebanese Shia militant group Hezbollah should clear things right up.

Hassan Nasrallah, the secretary general of a group that has been fighting Israel for decades, declared on Tuesday that “Wahhabism is more evil than Israel,” Lebanon’s Al Akhbar newspaper reported.

In other words, things have gotten so bad that Hezbollah, Israel’s mortal enemy, now considers Wahhabis — that is, fellow Muslims — to be worse than Israel. Bear in mind, this is coming from the same man who has described Israel as “a cancerous entity and the root of all the crises and wars” and pledged that Israel’s destiny “is manifested in our motto: 'Death to Israel.’”

But despite how it may seem, Nasrallah’s statement is not, at its base, a conflict about religion. Though there are certainly strong religious disagreements between Sunni and Shia — and especially between extreme fundamentalist Sunnis and extreme fundamentalist Shia — the conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia has little to do with dogma. It’s actually about something far less exotic: power and influence.

That is interesting considering that one of Hezbollah's stated major goals is the destruction of Israel.

Whoa, this is a major step forward

I don't know if I would call it a step forward.

This just seems like a clear indication of growing clash and tension between Iran and Saudi Arabia and their fight for dominance and influence in the region. Israel's existence is simply less important in that political reality. This is why we are seeing Iran's Hezbollah shitting on Saudi Arabia and Wahhabism

As bad as Hezbollah is, he is right that Wahhabism is the most dangerous thing in the middle east. Isn't Wahhabism basically responsible for 9/11, ISIS and what not?

At the end of the day it's all about Saudi Arabia trying to control power in the middle east.

The terrorist olympics are getting heated this year. Hezbollah can't stand the thought of losing the gold to the wahhabi.

Meanwhile, the same group loves bragging about their 10,000 rockets they want to fire at Israel. So both are full of it.

Just what the Middle East needs, more reactionary, extremist rhetoric and division amongst it's already hyper aggressive and all too willing to kill ethnic and political groups!

Honestly I'm dreading how much worse it's likely to get over there in the next decade, especially with the added pressure on resources and even basic survival global warming is going to increasingly place on people there.

It's reactionary and extremist to call a reactionary, extremist ideology evil?
