Nice find. It seemed like there was some lag on the text editor between pressing a Touch Bar button and it activating on the screen, but perhaps that's just that particular app.

I'm pretty sure this is a cable problem, not a HD problem. What kind of cable are you using to connect the HD to the MBP?

Its a 3rd party dongle from china. If it's the cable that begs the question why this exact same cable works fine with wi-fi for the 12" retina.

Is it normal not to receive a confirmation email after an order? In my account settings it says it's processing but I haven't received any email since ordering.

This is a known issue with USB-C cables, and affects other PCs. There's even an Intel whitepaper on it. If cables don't have proper shielding, they can emit RF interference (in excess of what the FCC allows) on the 2.4Ghz band which interrupt WiFi. It depends on the proximity of the cable to components in the particular laptop as to how much interference it will cause.

TL;DR don't buy cheap USB-C cables and dongles.

I'm really liking the look of the Refurbished Macbook Air for $1189, but I'd love a second opinion on the matter.

I've had both the MBA and MacBook Pro and the difference in form factor isn't enough for me to sacrifice the retina screen. When you place them on top of each other, there isn't really a lot of difference IMO. Although, I do find the position of the trackpad more ergonomically suited on the MBA and the keyboard is better (again IMO) although I do like the force feedback touchpad on the Pro.

So yeah, swings and roundabouts :p

I have a 2013 macbook air that is running great still.

Are they ever going to update the air line? Or is it now macbook and macbook pro?

It's real and it's spectacular.

Both the 13" MBA and 13" MBP look big next to it, but in different ways. It's thinner than the MBP of course, but it's also thinner than the thick end of the MBA. Footprint is also much smaller. You can see how much more the MBA juts out thanks to its huge bezels.

The metal hinge is also a nice upgrade. While it's all metal now, if you look closely from the inside, you can see that there's still some plastic where the wireless connectivity is housed. But it's much smaller, very well hidden, and no longer constitutes the entire hinge now.

Keyboard is definitely a big change and will take some time to get used to it, but I haven't noticed myself typing any slower with it. It's just as responsive (if not more), it just feels very, very different without as much travel.

Good upgrade if you're a MBA user, but I only got it because it was $1200. Wouldn't get it at $1500. If you want something closer to the $1k mark, get a refurb.

I've had the Magic Mouse 2 for a few days and I just can't get used to it. The profile is so low that you have to either fingertip grip or lift your hand to do any gestures and its not comfortable at all

too bad because I like the idea, I guess I'll return it and pick up the Logitech Mx Master

That keyboard is giving me a bit of anxiety just looking at it. I'm concerned I'm not going to take to it, or it will cause RSI issues from the lack of key travel. I guess I'll find out soon enough. At least I can return it if I hate it, but I don't have many options for a new pro machine besides this.

The keyboard is NOPE.

My fingers and palms strangely felt tired. Perhaps it's because of the lack of travel that i'm so familiar with? It felt like holding my fingers out wide in a holding position, and just brushing them on the keys.

I think the keyboard is good. I got used to it 10 mins playing in the store. But I was never picky about that stuff. Will be using external wireless keyboard most of the time.

It's definitely something you can't make an impression on without regular sustained use. It's really different from other keyboards. Akin to blackberry people never wanting to switch to touch screen keyboards because they like the tactile feel. I think all/most will be like this in the future and I think it's fine mostly. It's definitely strange at first.

How are you guys finding the USB-C charging cable? Have Apple improved it at all?

The one on my 2015 Macbook always slips out by a millimetre and stops charging if the cable gets knocked or pulled even slightly.

I don't think that's normal? You should go to the apple store for that.

Very snug. I'd say almost too snug.

So my MBP 15" w/ Touch Bar is supposed to be delivered tomorrow(!) and I don't have all my cables and accessories yet. In particular I need to get an external drive to act as a Time Machine. I looked at some TB3 multi-drive enclosures by Akitio, but apparently they are Windows-only?? I mistakenly thought Thunderbolt was Mac-only. I had no idea that PCs had them and that the standard was not platform-agnostic. This sucks!! Not only is USB-C a minefield, but so are TB3 accessories.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good, reliable external drive solution? 1TB or higher, needs to be quiet. This is for Time Machine, so doesn't need to be blazing speed. I looked at OWC's TB2 solutions, but they're not cheap. How are those TB2 LaCie d2 drives? I like the fact that it's fanless.

TB3 is platform agnostic, it's just no Mac has had TB3 until now. I don't see why an enclosure wouldn't work?

Also can you not just get a regular cheap external drive and plug it in through a USB-A to USB-C converter? Monoprice has them for $7, Apple's is $9

Yeah if you don't need blazing speed I don't see why you need TB2 or TB3. TB is professional-grade I/O akin to Firewire. USB is cheaper and SS USB is plenty fast for most consumer usecases, including backing up. BTW you will need an adapter or a TB2-TB3 cable extra if you get a TB2 device.

Like Zeyphersan said, get a regular USB external and either swap the cable for a USB-C one or use an adapter. Maybe you can find an external hard drive with USB-C out of the box, but the options are probably limited ATM. If the noise of a 2.5" HDD is too much (shouldn't be), you can swap it out for an SSD or just buy an 3.0 USB enclosure+SSD. I don't know of SATA single disc enclosures with a fan.

I want TB2 so I can daisy-chain. I'm aware of the performance bottleneck at the drive level compared with TB, but it's still better than USB3... just because it's probably only for Time Machine doesn't mean I don't want fast backups.

Yeah, I can't really afford 1+TB SSD right now after dropping a few thousand on the MBP, otherwise I would.

My 13" BTO MacBook Pro with touch pad just had its status changed to "Preparing for shipment." It was a day one pre-order from the Apple Japan Store.

Grab a m.2 to USB 3 enclosure now, and then upgrade the enclosure to TB3 later.

The only Apple mouse I ever enjoyed using was the Mighty Mouse (the one with the scroll ball and squeezable sides) and even then I ended up canning it for an Intellimouse Explorer v3.

For all their faults, the one thing Apple is consistently, genuinely shit at is mice. I just don't know why they bother.

Did anyone opt for the upgraded graphics card? (4gb) I figured why not since it was just an extra $100, and I want to drive two external 5k screens with it at some point.

The Verge said:
It turns out, however, that the bigger issue with these machines isn’t the performance, but the battery life. Apple promises 10 hours, but our tests fell far short of that.

Battery life averaged around five and a half hours while I used the 13-inch unit to do my work, which consists of keeping open Slack, Safari, Mail, TweetBot, and TextEdit, watching the occasional YouTube video, and opening various Apple apps here and there for testing. That’s worse than the new Surface Book, which got between six and eight hours of battery life in our use, and it’s significantly worse than last year’s MacBook Pro, which our reviewer got around 10 hours out of on a charge.
What. The. Fuck. Apple.

Everyone I've talked to says you get used to it. My second run-through on the rMB's keys with a typing program I was hitting my usual 70-80WPM with 1 or fewer mistakes.

When it comes to keyboards, I'll always prefer my Das Keyboard with it's delightful clacky traveling keys, but if I can pound something out with accuracy and at speed it ultimately doesn't matter for me.

I thought the cost is $180 more with education discount.

I got the fastest configuration so perhaps the cost difference is smaller. It was a $100 price difference for me in the US.

5 hours battery life seems unacceptable? Hm.. mine won't ship until end of December so I will keep an eye out on the real life tests.

I'm definitely more happy with going with the non-touchbar version now. The laptop itself is fantastic, especially coming from a 2012 air with its non-high res screen
