Ok, out of the blue, I get up today and turn on my nice computer, and the coloration of my monitor is all screwed up. There is a red tint on everything now. What I'm praying is that its just hte monitor and not the computer itself. Is there any way to fix this without buying a new monitor? My help manual says that it could be either a loose signal cable or it needs to be degaused. Now I've tried looking for problems in the cable and can't find any, and degauss doesn't work. Am I screwed?

Sounds like a gun has gone out on the monitor. New monitor time.

Obviously, test with another monitor to verify though.

I've seen this countless times, but then again, I'm in an office with a helluva lot of computers. Monitors die unfortunately. :(

Remove your VGA cable and check to see if you have any loose pins- check all the connections.

If everything's OK there, change monitor cables. If that doesn't work, throw a cheapo video card in there to see if that's the problem. If it's none of the above, then you may indeed have a bad monitor.

Isn't that a lot harder than just plugging in another monitor? I would start with trying a different monitor first, then go through your suggestions.

If he plugs in another monitor - and still has the same problem, he knows it's his video card and it just took a lot less time. Just my opinion though.

I had the exact same problem several years ago, one of the guns had failed. I would definitely check the video card and the cable, but don't be surprised if you have to get a new monitor.

I heard sometimes the monitor degause doesn't work, i hear of people putting magnets on a drill and manually degausing the screen.

Well, I just tried another monitor and it worked fine. I checked out the cables on both and I noticed that in my now-nonfunctioning monitor, one of the pins appeared to be missing. I'm still not sure if that could have caused it because I mean, we never unplug the monitor and it was working fine yesterday so I fail to see how a pin could break off during the night without unplugging the thing. But oh well, I guess I better get myself a new monitor.

Anyone have recommendations for affordable (yet decent) monitors? I deal with graphics a lot so I'm not sure if I should stick with CRT, or are LCD's finally decent too?

Yeah it is- if you've got a spare monitor lying around. :)

From his post, it sounded like he didn't have another monitor. Either method should work fine, but yours is undoubtedly quicker.

Those hues appear when your cable isn't snugly plugged in. So just plug it back in properly and it should work ok (dunno what's up with that missing pin though).
