Heroes of Newerth Beta PC (dota clone)

Trying to get my friend into the beta, and got him pretty pumped up for the game but don't have any invites :(. Would be more than happy if anyone had any spares :).

Edit: Got one! :)

Is there actually anything to the games website besides the front page? And is someone sending you an invite the only way to get in at this point?

Just got this in the email today. The game will be $30. preorder bonus:

Reserve your Beta Nickname and Account

Ability to Taunt in Game

Special In-Game Icon

Unique Chat Name Color

Beta Invites for your friends

I got a key, so nobody needs to send one my way any longer.

I played most of the day yesterday. I am completely new, never played DOTA. Read a few guides on their site, got the basic idea of the game. At first I thought it seemed pretty lame, then...well...it got addicting quickly.

Learning all the skills and all the classes is going to take a bit though. Looks like I will be in the Noob servers for quite some time.

I am mainly trying to play and get good with Thunderbringer. Harassing early and mid game, and trying to hold down the middle lane, which may not be the best idea for someone totally new to the game.

The game isn't design for 1v1. Play 5v5 games. for 1v1, I'll pick an invisible unit like Scout.

You do know they can just buy a reveal item and suddenly Scout is the worst hero ever? ;) In 1v1 and high-level games, any invisibility char is useless because people can counter them.

I'm tempted, but am a bit held back by the fact that I'm REALLY BAD at this game, even though I have my fun.

Anyone else jumping on the wagon?

Still waiting for confirmation if my computer will be supported by the non-beta Mac client. If it is, I'm buying this. Worth it just to show your support for S2 Games.

I more than likely will. I have a feeling that this wont be as big as DotA (for competition and whatnot). HOWEVER, HoN has better online, and is more fun in general.

I'm also tempted, but I'm afraid that this game will only have a small niche community.

If everyone who joins up is in a clan or only wants to stack teams in their favor, I'll be left up searching for balanced games for a long time.

Auto-balance is your friend, gotta applaud the HoN team for that

But almost every game I join has people locking up their clanmates and friends.
Already makes it unfair.

They need a "AUTO-BALANCE ONLY" button where it auto searches other people and starts game without going to the lobby.

Well, lock-ups usually are 2 or 3 people and that doesn't mean much. The key is using voice/ventrilo because THAT's why they have the upper hand.

That's automated matchmaking and they are working on that. It should come in the next few months.

There are average 10,000 players online at anytime with 200+ open games. That is not a small community at all. There are still millions of dota players who have not tried this game.

I have 8 invites to give out, PM me with your email and I'll throw one at you.

Pre-purchased the game already, cos I know I'll be buying it and I wanted to reserve my nick :D

Did you get 8 invitations for preordering? I want to preorder too but I don't want the golden shield icon next to the name which labels someone as a pro.

Heh. I heard people getting kicked from games because of the shield.

No, I think it was like 3, I've just been in the beta for a while so I've gotten a huge bunch of them before already.

Ever since I got the shield I've been saying I'm a developer. Haven't been kicked since.

I preordered as well. That's like 2 months WoW subscription, I payed plenty of those monthly fees back then and didn't even play as much as HoN.

S2 said they need the money to support all the servers for ongoing beta.

Still playing this game with friends and loving it. Delay is almost nonexistent, even when playing on a european server. Try that in dota and it'll be unplayable. The hero control in this game feels very good. Denies are rewarding with the deny message and last hits also feel great with the creep explosion. I really recommend that newcomers try this game out. I see quite a few noob games going up, and you can always make your own. Hell, I'm sure anyone from the gaf clan would be willing to help you out.

S2 just needs to import some more dota heroes and this game will be perfect :)

Edit: Casval thats a fantastic remake of meepo, and ill make a post in that thread tomorrow, but have you thought of giving him a set bonus for each additional tentacle he raises? For instance, at 6 he raises 1 tentacle giving all tentacles + 3% AS/MS and side tentacles gain like an additional 5% of hiveminds hp, then at 11 he can get another % bonus. IMO the bonus's you gave him on the tentacles arent sufficient enough to qualify him as a great late gamer because of the set numbers, such as +25 dmg and +150 health.

Thanks for the comments guys. Unfortunately, I had to lock it. I denied [this hero] from reaching Top Suggestions. Basically, it's an internet meme from SomethingAwful, and it zerged over 100 yes votes in 3 hours due to a link being posted at SomethingAwful. After I denied it, my Meepo suggestion instantly got 3 downvotes because the SA Hivemind (how ironic!) got denied of their meme >.>

Anyway, idiots like them make me really appreciate GAF. I'm still new here, but even the trolls here at least make me smile once in a while :lol

EDIT: Reopened the topic, hopefully it's blown over by now = /
Also, regarding your suggestion, that was my original plan, but I decided it would be too linear a skill progression. I wanted specifically to cater to different playstyles; the +HP and MP is no joke though =P
I don't want the Hivemind to be a late game beast; that would cause a lot of problems, seeing as how his survivability is already much higher than Meepo's, his mobility is higher too (being able to Poof to Earthbinded enemies), and his Poof damage is higher too (due to Earthbind now removing magic armor).

Does anyone have any beta keys left

Didn't you just get a League of Legends beta a few minutes ago? You should cheerish the beta key and play that game for a few more days.

Yea, but I'm giving them away to friends because they're huge DOTA fanatics. Personally I prefer more traditional RTS games.

30 bucks is way to expensive for my taste. Its not that I can't afford it, is just that I don't think that it's the right price.

Why? A couple of reasons, first because its a pretty straightforward game without much change game over game(with this I mean that its always the same mechanics around the game and it will be the players who will make each game feel different), that was how DoTA was and this is how I assume this game will be, sure, there are new maps here but I don't see them making things too different (I don't like the other 5v5 map but I do like how you can make faster-paced matches in the 3v3 map.

But most of all, because its just a remake, the same game with a new coat of paint, of a FREE game that wasn't even done by S2, it was made by someone else who is making a Free2Play dota clone(ironically).

Yes, its nice they have a few new maps and heroes, and I think I would gladly pay for this game, but 30 seems too much. Specially when you take into account the above.

People often argue in the forums against these claims saying that the effort put in the matchmaking and lobby, yeah, these are great, but a bit over-exaggerated.

When people bought Warcraft 3, they weren't just paying for the ladder game. They also paid for the custom content, like DotA.

HoN is going to be no different--except instead of just silly tower defense maps (there will probably be plenty of those), you can make stuff as crazy as fully functional FPS and platformers. I believe S2 is planning to show off the moddability of the game later in the beta. Don't quote me on that though =P

I should also say that the replay function is supposedly going to be CRAZY. I've not see S2 post about it, but other moderators have very specifically said that you'll be able to do stuff like fly-through views and 1st person viewing.
It should be very interesting =P

30$ doesn't seem like a shabby price to me. Free is good as well. It's worth 30$ and I say that preferring LoL.

Worth $30, especially considering it's multi-platform and that they're constantly introducing new heroes (two new today for example). This might grow really big.

Teknopathetic said:
Yeah, I forgot about multi-platform but that's pretty big, especially for linux users who never get any love (stop using linux, hippies).

Yeah, Linux support is amazing. Sadly patches and similar are still behind on other OSes (following OS X myself but I need to upgrade my graphics card). Still, very nice to see and Savage 2 did multi-platform very well.

Precisely, people who bought W3 payed for a lot of things besides DoTA. Not to mention, who made DoTA never got any profit through selling it directly, even though it was one of the most popular online pc games.

Only two developers of DotA Allstars have truly contributed anything to the map though.
Guinsoo, who created Allstars by copying heroes from all the other DotA maps, and IceFrog, who added original content and balanced the game out.

Don't know about Guinsoo's financial status, but I know that IceFrog is well-off enough that he doesn't need any sort of compensation, or at the very least, doesn't want any.

But anyway, HoN is a lot more than just what you're playing in the beta. There are going to be a ton of awesome stuff that we'll see in the coming months as the game is expanded.

Yea I also hear the map editor will be pretty extensive and the engine is not limited to just tower defense and games like it, so you will be paying for hon and many future mods that people will make for it. I remember reading they do want the map editor in sometime during beta but its not high priority at the moment.

I also payed for it considering I have already 4days played on this account alone (after stat wipe) I think it has a lot of potential.

You're not... THE Ghostridah are you? Warcraft 3 ladder player... :O
