Add a dislike button and some new emojis, make it all exclusive to neogaf gold/patreon subs. Custom avatars and signatures?

Set up a Patreon and Affilliate links for gaming sites, whenever there's steam/epic/gog/greenmangaming deals make sure people have easy access to those links maybe a sticky? either way, you can make it mandatory to share those ref links, maybe even make a sticky in the gaming community with a weekly gaming deals thread, im sure many users will pop in to share stuff on sale/use the gaf reflink. Wario64 monetized his twitter account by sharing deals, no reason Neogaf can't make some money.

I'm not a fan of monetizing moderation things like bans and stuff, but maybe gold members/patreon supporters can get the benefit of disputing the ban/get a second chance like that thread we used to have? I wouldn't really like a system where you can buy "lives" or make it "p2w" but having the benefit of exposing your case/apologizing/making a compromise seems alright to me.

GAF Podcast/News roundup thread/video. Basically bite sized information one the biggest news of the week to try and drive more traffic instead of having all the news scattered around.

GAF buy in competitions of popular games, with prizes. say $5 entry and the winner gets a $100 psn/amazon/xbox gift card. Same with contests of content creation and other miscellaneous activities.

GAF Referral system, you can earn gold or in-forum rewards for referring new users that use your link or code to sign up on GAF, also new gold subscribers. We can come up with a set of perks to earn.

Marketplace fees? Currently there's not much activity in the marketplace but we could look into increasing that and then can offer maybe mediation services for a fee? Not sure if it can even be automated. OPT IN only, not mandatory.

Buy in raffles for game keys/physical goodies/ Neogaf merch etc

Console Warrior of the month award - patreon supporters and gold users vote on who has been the most dedicated console warrior during the month while also managing to escape a ban. The winner gets a turd emoji next to their profile and a 3 day ban as their prize. (LOL)

I'll post more ideas as they come.

My idea is to have rotating mod powers, maybe something that switches to a random user every week, but the only power is to assign custom tags. I'll volunteer to have this power for the first year to ya know...kinda set the tone. Then it can rotate.

Hey Tyler, it's Kretos, just borrowing my friend's account real quick (but you can delete it, he doesn't care). Firstly, cute thing you did there changing his username. Secondly, just for clarification are you seriously okay with the way NeoGaf is right now? No ad revenues?? There will be an Incel Community | OT thread by the end of the year (if there isn't one already). Is the site's moral grotesqueity supposed to be your revenge against the "sjw" who scorned you? Good grief. No offense but be honest, if you heard of someone else doing that, wouldn't you think that it's the most pathetic and predictable thing ever?

As a fellow human being, if you're not seeing a therapist already, I urge you to consider it.

I’ll disable ad block.

There are some pretty solid suggestions. The pay to unban or “warrior protection” would probably bring in a little extra revenue, and you could make it cost prohibitive to discourage abuse. Like 10 bucks or something.

Something else that would be cool, maybe like a forum recap? I know some talked about doing news and stuff, but most of the news is in the forums as is, would be entertaining to have a “news style reporting” on hot threads and big discussions/differing opinions taking place.

Regarding Dislike buttons, I'd say no. That would be easily weaponised. The triggered one is okay but I've been in a few forums where its introduction made the forum a nastier place.

The issue is traffic. This site just doesn't get enough traffic to justify platform specific forums. Just look at the Communities section and how little activity there is.
Plus the aim should just be that every member is capable of having a mature discussion about any platform, even if they don’t own the platform. I’m not sure how segregating anything helps. Everyone knows who the offenders are on both sides, they hold grudges against their counterparts and constantly descend on similar threads (sales/first party discussion/concern threads etc). To be honest I’m sick of all of them but they know how to walk the line to avoid a ban. We also don’t see the number of warnings some of the worst offenders get. To be honest some people have 9 lives here, as they get many temporary bans before getting perma banned (if at all). How do you fix that problem? I have no idea to be honest, they all need to grow up a little bit.

What time is it?
Real suggestions:

-Support GAF on the header bar that includes links to Gold, Patreon, Tip Jar (PayPal?)
-Allow Brave users to automatically donate BAT
-More perks for Gold. Spit balling: Double Giveaway entries for Gold Users (maybe allow the contest holder a toggle to allow this), custom colors for usernames or other flare, game night with EviLore EviLore or the moderation team
-PBS style fundraising once or twice a year. This may require transparency you may not be willing to disclose (server costs, networking costs, development costs, ad revenue, sub revenue, etc.) but it might allow you to set realistic funding goals and make humans more willing to participate.
-More community events akin to the Cyberpunk art contest.
-Have the site detect adblockers and kindly ask users to whitelist.
-Rethink the structure of the forum, in particular the communities section. Make the most of the Gaming and Off-Topic section where the majority of the activity and posts are occurring.

Sure, it would save some money, but that would suck. There's a ton of internet history in the post database that should be preserved forever. Not worth the tradeoff. Shifting it to an archive would also be detrimental to organic traffic and so forth.
When you’re making an archive nobody keeps EVERYTHING. So form a free committee from members to decide what 5-15% of all the database is actual history. Nobody needs threads upon threads of troll in-fighting, there’s no value to that, most of it is circular logic, worthless ad hominem and childish.

Does the Wayback machine archive this site too?

We really can’t do many of these suggestions with 300 daily members. We need more and new eyes on the forum, which means expanding to things like a podcast.

Aren’t podcasts a bit old school?

How about we do a NeoGAF News on YouTube? We could have Ass of Can Whooping Ass of Can Whooping and Bo_Hazem Bo_Hazem as the two news anchors and they could round up the days news;

Which tit has been banned today? Stay tuned to find out.

Plus we have an exclusive in depth interview with NeoGAF cult hero ByranK.

Now on to today’s most popular thread, ‘who has the most poggers ass; Aloy or that man from Returnal?’

I think there’s potential.

It depends how dire the situation is. Producing a quality podcast or YouTube channel isn't an insignificant amount of work. And while you could farm so of the duties out to the community, you also have to be careful of what is being represented of the brand. Getting more traffic here is tricky as EviLore EviLore alluded to, message boards certainly aren't what is hip these days. While getting more traffic would be great, we probably need to focus on how to best monetize what is here without incurring a lot of additional development or production costs.

Plus the aim should just be that every member is capable of having a mature discussion about any platform, even if they don’t own the platform. I’m not sure how segregating anything helps. I look at it two ways. We need mature discussion but we are also discussion a hobby and you should never be too self serious in that type of discourse. If you ever posted on the IGN boards in the 00s, you might be familiar with dreamvsps2 (I think he had an account here for a while) who was a notorious PS2/GameCube troll. It was an obvious schtick and always light hearted. IGN let you rack about 20-30 bans before going to a mod vote for permaban. I'd never vote for him to be permabanned. He was just so obvious and always made me laugh. I guess I drew the line between malicious trolling and humor. And that line is probably more along the lines of defining pornography (you know it when you see it).

Why do green rats have such shit tastes in consoles

It'd be great

Thank you for the hard work and honesty! I'm not an old member (used to prowl when there were membership'requirements'), but I appreciate here.

I have ad block off and don't see any ads though.

I looked at Gold a while back, and while I do value here, it really doesn't offer enough for the price. I know it's really on supposed to be little extras rather than some full blown subscription thing, but you are asking quite a bit for it.

I'm not sure what more you could add though. I mean, maybe having more reactions for Gold members? And I know you want to keep it positive here, but a couple of negative ones might well sway me*.

This and youtube shorts would probably be an easier way to reach new people.
Yup and it doesn’t really take much to do. Would be a great way to expand GAF and bring new people here. Once a YT channel gets to 1000 subs it can be monetized and then offer things like memberships.

Maybe we can do some kind of one time fundraiser? Surely some other communities out there would also want to see GAF stay afloat. Maybe a site like Gematsu or Siliconera would agree to some kind of one time partnership?

Maybe EviLore EviLore can do some kind of one time partnership with Digital Foundry where he appears at the end of one of their weekly Directs to answer a few questions while also raising awareness for the site? DF has accounts here right?

Would you be comfortable giving an idea of what it costs to run the site on a monthly basis… are we talking hundreds of dollars, thousands, or tens of thousands per month?

Lastly, I see that GAF gold contributes a few bucks to the site, but is there an easy way for someone to donate, say $100 or $1000 to the site?

EviLore EviLore I run a Gaming Website with almost 10K Subscribers on YouTube. If your looking for maybe some advertising or get you sponsored we can discuss a few things if you are interested. Another option is to do a video for it that would be tailored for your needs/wants or I may also put up a NeoGaf banner on our site on the homepage for a rental monthly fee that links to the forum page.

I also run Google ads, Facebook and been quite successful at it. Let me know if your interested.

The minimum we could all do is to turn off adblock.
I wouldn't even mind a reminder like the majority of sites are doing to let you know that you have ad block on and removing it would really help the site.

Nothing like totally blocking content because of it like some sites but a reminder for people who aren't reading this thread.

I honestly didn't even know i had it on for this site.

It’s always been tough to monetize forums, but right now is about as tough as it’s ever been for GAF since we have a huge post history that requires a lot of server power to keep it all integrated

Sorry if I’m being a dumb dumb but would purging everything prior to 2021 help bring costs down?
It sounds like alot of his costs is based around storage.

Lore, are you guys on a cloud deployment like AWS? What's the cost breakdown for just having Neogaf up and running (ignoring things like development costs)? Not actual figures just like %.

e.g. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/how-aws-pricing-works/amazon-ec2-cost-breakdown.html

Or does Gaf actually have its own racks hosted somewhere?

Regardless, ads and affiliate links are A-OK. A Patreon page might help too. Another way to invite more income might be to have some of our more prolific members here have an incentive to boost gaf's online presence. So essentially content creation. Imagine a NeoGaf game review channel, or if this site hosted articles made by members (in a competition type scenario where there are submissions for ideas) on its own dedicated part of the site. Gaf splits ad revenue for hits/ads on that article maybe 20/80 (in the forums favor). A big part of SEO as I know you're aware is content.

Give a way to people to make donations. Have a campaign once every year where you ask people to participate.

As someone not particularly savvy with this kind of stuff, how much would it help if nobody used an ad-blocker?

I don’t, and it’s honestly not that intrusive. I can’t stand ads on YouTube and stuff, but with GAF it’s mostly an entirely ignorable banner at the top/bottom of the page, it’s really not a big deal.

🤷🏼‍♂️

Edit: obviously a request that people stop using ad-blockers likely wouldn’t go down well, but I ask more out of curiosity.

We could put up some affiliate links that users could click on for, say, GreenManGaming, HumbleBundle, or other legitimate game vendors with affiliate programs. GAF would get a percentage of sales without any cost to users. Was something we did a long time ago.
GAF directs a lot of traffic to storefronts and is a significant influence in many people's purchasing decisions, so it seems only fair that a GAF-owned affiliate code can get attached to links so that you get a cut too.

Is there a way for Amazon links to be automatically recognized and parsed to include a GAF affiliate code as well?
