Hey GAF, How Do You Properly Cancel A PS Plus Subscription?

So after getting my coupon, I decided to get half off a 10 USD PSN card so I could buy Sonic The Fighters. I also wanted to get Marvel vs Capcom Origins, but the total went over 12 dollars. No biggie, until I remember that un like the eShop, you can't add what you need to pay your cart off; you need to add 5 USD minimum. So I then noticed that there was a PS Plus sale which would make the total less than 10 USD! I would never pay for plus, but was wondering if there were codes online for free trials. Luckily, I found one on the bottom on this page. As per the fine print, it needs a credit card linked, but it will not be charged if you cancel prior to the 13th day.

Sony said:
You will receive this membership product for 14-days. Unless you cancel your membership prior to the 13th day of your trial, your trial will automatically convert to a 1-month PlayStation®Plus membership, and $9.99 will automatically be deducted from your Network Wallet according to the Sony Entertainment Network Terms of Service and User Agreement. This PlayStation®Plus membership will automatically renew every 1 month for $9.99 until you cancel it. You may cancel your membership via the account management on your SEN account, by contacting customer support at 877-971-7669 or through www.us.playstation.com. If you purchase this product, the auto top up setting in your SEN account will automatically be turned “ON” to fund all SEN purchases using the credit card associated with your SEN account. Use of PSN℠ is subject to the Terms of Service and User Agreement and applicable privacy policy, see http://www.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/tosua. PS Plus is only available to legal U.S. and Canadian residents with a SEN account who are 7 years or older, and legal residents of Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil who are 13 years or older. Children under 18 must have parental consent to establish a SEN account and may not be able to access certain content or services. Broadband service required for download; user responsible for associated fees. PSN features and offerings may change without notice.

I'm like, fair enough, let's do this! So i just bought both games and after I did, went to this page and followed all the directions...

Except nothing's actually cancelled. It is set to not automatically renew, but it is not actually cancelled. now I'm worried that I will be charged. Even worse, since it's not cancelled, every single game I boot up on my damned PS3 keeps asking me if I wand to use the feature for uploading saved data to online storage, which I don't want to.

So, can I even cancel this?! The page with the trial that I quoted said cancel, so I thought that actually meant you could cancel! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to rid myself of plus, or it's gonna be a long wait.

Um, it will not auto-renew. You won't be charged anything.
Yet the page said I could cancel, that's what's leaving me confused because I want to cancel, as in I don't want PSN Plus on my account at all, or it's annoying prompts. Is there no way to actually cancel?

"Canceling" PS+ means you're just cancelling the auto-renew.

PS+ is going to stay on until it runs out. You can't stop it once its started.

You did everything correctly. No auto-renew = cancelled. You will not be charged. It just runs out the remaining time now

Wow, that is some bullshit. There is no way, no reason, why they should lie about it! They could have easily said something like:

You will receive this trial for 14-days. Unless you disable auto-renew on your account prior to the 13th day of your free trial period, your trial will automatically convert to a 1-month PlayStation®Plus membership, and $9.99 will automatically be deducted from your Network Wallet according to the Sony Entertainment Network Terms of Service and User Agreement.

That would have been honest! Wow, this sucks for me. This is truly shocking for me, that cancel; doesn't mean cancel. So there's no cancellation even over the phone? I mean, if there is, I wouldn't mind calling.

Wait...so you're mad you're getting the remaining amount of PS+ time?

I am upset that there is no cancellation when there was text of canceling service, I won't deny that.

I want to cancel my PS Plus membership, not merely cancel my PS Plus auto-renew.

umm...then just interpret it as the remaining 13 days is a free gift to you?

I mean...that's how most free trials are like...

???

I don't get it. You're not out any money are you?

They do say up front that your auto renewal is turned on by default when using the 14-day free trial. All you have to do is turn it off (which you've already done) and you won't be charged anything. You get to remain a PS plus member until the 14 days are up and then you're not anymore. Not seeing the problem here.

Also - the $5.00 minimum is only for purchases under $5.00.

You can charge the exact amount when your purchase is over $5.00. It's the same as Steam.

I don't get it. Is PS+ so bad that you'd be insulted to have a bunch of free days? (I think its not).

Very confused right now lol

You do realize, that pretty much nearly every subscription based service, if you cancel in the middle of the period, you still get the rest of the time left? Netlfix, Hulu, Crunchyroll... they all work the same way.

Its not like what Sony's doing is something new. It's pretty much the standard way most subscription based services work.

I hate free trials that try to get you by charging you once it runs out. If you forget to cancel they get money. Even if you decided you didn't like the service.

I've racked my brain and cannot think of any services where the free trial immediately ends, and doesn't simply cancel at the end of the trial period.

Xbox Live, PSN, Spotify, Netflix, Google Play Music, Amazon Prime, etc, etc, etc. It's at the end of the trial period.

The only one I can think of is FreedomPop and that's because they change the billing period whenever you switch plans.

tldr; deal with it?

They didn't lie, cancelling is turning off auto-renew. The prompts for uploading save data only happen the first time you start a game, unless you're cycling through different games constantly I'm not sure how this is a massively annoying thing. Also, several services I've used simply use turning off auto-renew as their cancellation.

Actually very few services will remove your paid for time when you cancel, they almost all finish out the current time period. Ridiculous overreaction if this is significantly upsetting to you.

So you are mad because you are getting some ps3 prompts?

Auto renew cancelling is cancelling ps+, typically this is fine because ps+ offers benefits over normal psn so people want it for as long as possible.

But you are mad about some prompts...

It could be more clear, but in the end you won't be losing any money. Just pretend it's canceled now and eventually it will be.

I tried to, but the minimum seemed to be 5 USD, even though I had 10.01 in my wallet already. I tried through the console.

I think, in my case, it is because of the inconvenience on asking about cloud saves on game boot-up. Then again, I don't know that much about it; is there way to disable it system-wide as to avoid this annoyance? I know it's just an extra screen, but when I boot up a game, and go do a quick errand, I want to be greeted by the game, not some menu that I forgot to cancel or allow.

Truthfully, I don't do many subscriptions, or trials to them. When I do, it's usually amazon prime trials, which I do cancel (and I mean cancel, as in chat with an amazon rep to cancel the remaining time too). So no, I am not that learned on the matter truthfully speaking.

Again, thank you for the input guys. I guess I'll either wait playing my PS3 2 weeks, or live with the annoyance. At the very least, I am glad to know that I did everything right and don't have to worry about being charged or my PSN account being banned or something like that.

It only is the first time you play each game with plus. Solution: play more games

Also it's like seriously a button press

Come on man

That's strange, it's working fine for me on PS4 and the webstore.

Hulu.... hulu ends as soon as you cancel your account/turn auto renew off.

I got a 3 month trial from neon alley put it in, and did my day 1 cancel/autorenew off like I would with any other account and lost access to the paid hulu stuff.... haven't touched hulu since....

As for the Op, I really don't get what the issue is... your account won't have PS+ as soon as your next billing period comes up... all removing it would do is make it so you can't access the free games anymore, it wouldn't change anything else at all... so just ignore the free games and what not?

you can turn that off in settings...
or if you say no the first time it shouldn't show up again o_O

Word of advice: don't get a xbox if you hate prompts that much.
(especially since cloud/storage prompts are there for both silver and gold.)

During your remaining trial period, you should take advantage of at least one of the free games offered... You know, to get your money's worth out of the inconvenience.

Wait, I'm confused. Are you upset that after canceling your PlayStation Plus Aut-Renewal that you still have to deal with the horror of being a Plus member for thirteen days? Is that what is going on here?

Need clarification pls.

to be fair the ps3 games aren't very interesting this month... next month might be better and they should still be a member though. (of course I am just not a fan of dead space and can't remember what vessel is)

I believe it only asks you for a cloud save if you're online (and once if you say no) so you can avoid it by not being online. Waiting it out for two weeks seems more reasonable though.

What in the world? You are not going to play because you get a prompt when you start a game? Like really? That is enough to not play the system? I am at a loss of words. I thought my crazy fan noise thing was bad, but this just takes the cake.

I don't think any company would see the need to provide a quick option to cancel a paid-for subscription immediately.

There would probably be about 6 people in total that would feel the need to cancel it immediately and thousands that would press it by mistake and complain about losing their remaining time, that they had paid for, with the service.

OP you are a fascinating individual. Truly splendid. What other pet peeves do you have? What game did you want so much you would put up with PlayStation Plus for two whole weeks? Oh, I just must know more!

If the OP has a Vita, they could get Muramasa and play it like crazy for the next two weeks. Then when their Plus trial ends, they can go and buy it. Such a lovely game.

You have to cancel it on the website before it auto-renews.

Sony auto-renewed my subscription last year, and I was not happy about it. IMO auto-renew should NOT be on by default.

HUELEN added $10 and the total was $12. Across all PS platforms the minimum is $5 since you'll be adding $2 extra dollars the purchase was $2.

It charges any amount as along as the total is over $5.01..but less than that it will always be $5.

And yeah..cancelling auto-renewal is the only way to cancel time. Not the most accurate wording but no biggie and nothing offensive.
