I agree with RichP I'm pretty sure that if HD DVD ceased to exist tommorrow. Adoption rates of Blu Ray wouldnt increase dramatically and those of you that think that the mass market is sitting on fence just waiting for a winner are in for a rude awakening because like RichP said dvds are 'good enough' for most people.

HD downloads have one problem. HDD space is exhaustible and it will NEVER be enough space. Someone can not build up a movie collection only on HDD (Hard drive) because they will run out of space and not to mention hard drive failures (they do happen).

Just not going to happen, people will always want/need physical media. I remember when my uncle had a 3 GB HDD when those first came out. I was like dag, you will never ever need another HDD. Some years later and now 3 GB is a joke. So the download thing while I think will have a place in the market (maybe video rentals) it is not viable for purchases and collecting a library.

At least Onkyo is thinking to the future with their new receiver including a 2TB drive :D

:lol

HDD space is pretty much inexhaustible, man. So cheap. Downloads will fail because they're more cumbersome for Joe DVD-watcher to manage and require keeping up with PC hardware and software to a degree that standalone players don't.

Spoken like an HD DVD supporter that refuses to accept that just because their format of choice is floundering, another can flourish.

I'm not gonna get baited cause then I'm the only one that suffers the consequences. All I'm saying is that DVD is 'good enough' for most people IMHO. This has nothing to do with me owning an HD DVD player. Can you just set that aside for a little while?

What are you talking about? I clicked on the link that he posted, noticed that the site was using official Blu-Ray artwork in its banner, which looked too professional for a fansite like High-Def Digest (which is the best site for equal coverage of both formats). I went and did a WHOIS on the URL and it turned out to be a site setup by FOX.

I don't read The Digital Bits anymore since it's been converted over into a BRD only site so I wouldn't know anything about what Bill posted.

Yea, he's definitely sold out now. So much so that he's providing content for what is basically a ThreeSpeach blog. He's basically now just providing marketing content for Blu-Ray.

HD Digest does it the best. They have one guy handle all BRD reviews and another do all HD-DVD reviews. You can view the site with combined news, or separated into either format.

Good point, but I often wonder if the REAL HD format war will be fought in the blank media arena.

We've seen what the success of downloadable music meant for CD sales, as broadband penetration grows I honestly think the same thing will happen for flicks. Then, we can burn these movies to BD/HD-DVD. DRM'ed to death, but there's no technical reason this couldn't happen.

The HUGE question mark is broadband, though. I haven't been in the market for awhile so I haven't seen the latest adoption stats, so I'm not sure if it has levelled off. You can manage a few megs worth of songs on dialup, but those 10+ gigabyte HD movies are going to be a BITCH ("Hey Ethyl, I kicked off 'Flags of our Fathers' on Monday, it should be ready by Saturday movie night!"). :D

How is it a viral site if they say up front that they're backed by the Blu-Ray studios for the purpose of promoting Blu-Ray discussion?

I swear, the worse things look for HD-DVD, the more outrage over smaller and smaller things. We could probably reverse-engineer the sales charts by tracking the outrage and volume of PR posts by Main Event and Manabyte.

God knows, but they say up front that theyre backed by the Blu-ray group. Why does Kenny G mention Blu-ray format in press releases from Universal? Is he a viral marketeer too?

Good god.

Summary: You are a "fanboy" if you choose one format. You're a viral marketer is you post a link to a Blu-ray Group sponsored site.

However, you are an analyst if you promte HD (Rob Enderle*), just a fan of HD movies if you chose an HD-DVD player, and interested in discussion if you post Toshiba PR.

Mana, you have a huge double standard.

Blu-ray Disc broadens horizons

Blu-ray & Rentrak Agreement

Blu-ray Disc is going to the masses. Rentrak Corp. said Monday that it has broadened its revenue-sharing deal with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to include the high-definition discs, beginning in September.

The deal marks Rentrak's first Blu-ray Disc distribution arrangement and includes more than 80 catalog and new-release titles. It makes it easier for video rental dealers to bring in Blu-ray Disc titles because Rentrak's pay-per-transaction program allows retailers to bring in more copies of new releases with less of an upfront investment. PPT retailers then share a percentage of rental revenue with Rentrak, and the studio, as they come in.

"This move illustrates Rentrak's market knowledge and foresight to get in on the ground floor of this fast-moving industry trend that will help accelerate consumer adoption of high definition technology," said Marty Graham, president of Rentrak's PPT division. "Our revenue-sharing model is an effective way to represent a broad range of titles and sets the stage for Rentrak to distribute additional high-definition content from our large roster of studio partners."

David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said the deal "is important for the expansion of the Blu-ray Disc format, because it provides access to more rental channels for retailers. In turn, by broadening Blu-ray Discs in the rental market, consumers are given more opportunities to experience this revolutionary technology. And once they see it, they are going to be hooked.

I don't give a flying **** whose logo is on my movie disc or what ****ing color the box is. As long as I can play the movie in HD I don't care. Bickering fanboys and rampant viral marketers pretending to like movies (they just care about their Zipatoni paycheck) has sickened me to the point where I've just been buying standard DVDs lately and watching them upconverted.

The last HD-DVD I bought was Children of Men and the last Blu-Ray I bought was Planet Earth. I've bought a stack of cheap DVDs since then (none more than $14, most under $10). Hell I was in Fry's yesterday and got Iron Giant SE and the Snatch Deluxe Gift Set for $15 total, while two retards were fighting over the audio quality on some movie that was on both HD formats.

Hollywood reporter is a viral site, DVD is beating them both, rental means less sales, Sony is using strongarm tactics to make this happen, it's too early to call, lower player prices will make this moot as nobody will have the players, movie-attach rate for PS3 will be even *lower*, more standalone HD-DVD players... did I miss anything?

Yet you apply this standard only to pro-Blu-ray sites and commentators. The one clearly identified viral (Enderle) gathered nary a bit of outrage from you, and yet a clearly lablelled promotional site gets slandered as "viral" by you.

If you are only buying SD stuff, why post here? Especially in a one-sided manner?

gigabyte internet is coming man, believe!

Hong Kong has had it for the last two years. With that said, you could be right. Someone would have to come up with a very easy way to burn content though. Right now it is cumbersome. Not like burning a music cd which is just drag, drop and burn.

That thing is beautiful. I think I will just build a linux based file server and stream the content through out the house to my multiple ps3s

Enderle is the guy who was predicting HD-DVD victory via Wal*mart, and was exposed as a "zero cost marketing expert" with Toshiba and MS listed as his clients. He poses as an analyst.

He was linked/quoted here quite a bit.

My point is you don't call out Main Event for the Toshiba PR or anyone for the Amir postings (which I have no problem with) but then start chanting "viral viral viral" when pro-Blu-ray analysis or PR is linked. And claim to be neutral.

It must really burn you to know that some people can watch any HD release they want.

Here, here! My primary hobby is gaming, but a close second is home theater. The fact that I have both consoles that matter to me AND have the ability to watch all HD formats is just mana from Heaven, baby! My top 5 favorite discs are Casino Royale, Pirates 1, The Thing, Batman Begins, and the Matrix. It would be a damn shame to miss out on any of them!

Years ago when I spent buku dollars on the very first Panny progressive scan DVD player, I would have looked at you like you were INSANE if you told me that not 1, but 2 game consoles would serve as my primary movie players.

In fact, my biggest disappointment from E3 was the non-appearance of a Video Marketplace-like service from Sony. I watch all KINDS of junk on Microsoft's service (not everything is worth owning, after all!).

im right there with you on this one. I love home audio video. I much rather plop down in front of a 50" plasma with a 7.1 surround sound than go to the theater. My dream setup is a harmon and kardon receiver with a B & W speaker system.

As for Sony, I really hope they do get a movie, tv and music video service going. I also hope they do something different from Microsoft like maybe offer end films.

What does that have to do with your one-sided replies? What does that have to do with ignoring the actual HD-DVD viral marketing and making unfounded accusations of it about BluRay?

As far as movies go: I'm a big movie fanboy, but don't want to buy movies in a format that will be extinct in a year or two, so I'm all for HD-DVD hurrying up and dying. That's just how I see it going, and why I chose a Blu-ray player despite the higher cost. History seems to be proving my bet on Blu-ray a wise one. If I had been wrong, I'd be the first one chanting "die Blu-ray already." One format = more important than which format, and the technical advantages of each side mean nothing to me.

I don't know. You have to search your soul and find the answer for yourself. Now go m' boy you have work to do, like list the games that according to you look better than Killzone2, try to call out anyone who's excited about anything Sony, or attack the "Blu-boys" just because they're stating the truth (which is that HD-DVD is losing... badly).

So I'm not allowed to like the graphics on other PS3 games above Killzone 2? God damnit, this place is making me sick.

The only "Blu-boys" I seriously attack are those who act like nothing more than BOTS who are posting their Zipatoni-approved marketing links on this forum, which I thought was against that sort of bullshit. If someone was acting like a HD-DVD, UMD, DVD-A, SACD bot posting the same shit I'd call them out too.
